  • We analyze the self-pulsation(SP) characteristics due to mode beating of two modes emitted in a multi-section complex-coupled (CC) DFB laser composed of two DFB sections and a phase control section between them. SP frequency due to mode beating of the two modes is determined by the difference of grating periods in the two CC DFB regions. As the difference of grating periods in the two CC DFB regions increases, the SP frequency increases from very low frequency to the THz region. In the case of a mode which is not located in the stop band of the other DFB region, the mode propagates into the other DFB region without a high reflection, so that output powers emitted in a multi-section CC DFB laser have high modulation indexes due to the large interaction between the two modes.

  • We investigate the pulsation characteristics in a multi-section DFB laser which is composed of one DFB section, phase tuning section, and gain section. Multi-section DFB lasers with anti-phase (AP) complex-coupled (CC) DFB structure show wide current ranges of gain and phase tuning sections fer stable pulsations compared to those with in-phase CC DFB structure or index-coupled DFB structure. For multi-section DFB lasers with AP CC DFB structure, the current range of a gain section for stable pulsations increases and the tuning range of the pulsation frequency increases as a coupling strength or a gain coupling coefficient increases Also, the tuning range using the phase variation in a phase tuning section increases. For a fixed coupling strength, the current ranges of gain and phase tuning sections for stable pulsations increase and the tuning range of the pulsation frequency increases as the length of a DFB section increases.

  • We have calculated the power extraction efficiency and the lasing wavelength distribution of complex-coupled(CC) DFB lasers above threshold for various|$\chi$L| and facet reflectivity combinations, and we have compared the results with those at threshold. Also, we have investigated the effect of coupling coefficient ratio(CR) and the reflectivity of AR facet on the power extraction efficiency and the lasing wavelength distribution. At threshold, the single mode yield as a function of power extraction efficiency of in-phase(IP) CC DFB lasers is the same as that of anti-phase(AP) CC DFB lasers. Above threshold, however, the single mode yield as a function of power extraction efficiency of IP CC DFB lasers is much larger than that of AP CC DFB lasers. For IP CC DFB lasers, AR-HR combination has high single mode yield and large power extraction efficiency compared to other facet combinations. IP CC DFB laser with AR-HR combination for |$\chi$L|of 0.8 has the highest single mode yield and largest power extraction efficiency above threshold among the cases considered. For AR-HR combination, as CR increases and the reflectivity of AR facet decreases, both single mode yield and power extraction efficiency increase due to the reduction of the spatial hole burning effect. For AR-HR combination, the lasing wavelength of CC DFB laser has distributed over the stopband of DFB. As CR increases, the lasing wavelength concentrates on the long wavelength side for IP CC DFB laser, while on the short wavelength side for AP CC DFB laser. As |$\chi$L| increases, the width of the wavelength distribution decreases and the lasing wavelength moves to the long wavelength side.

  • The effect of gain dispersion on the self-pulsation (SP) characteristics due to the mode beating of two modes emitted in a multisection DFB laser composed of two complex-coupled DFB sections and a phase control section is investigated. When the peak wavelength, ${\lambda}_{p}$, of the gain spectrum of the DFB section is positioned in the center of the lasing wavelengths or the Bragg wavelengths of the two DFB sections, the maximum SP frequencies are higher and the modulation index has better characteristics compared to those cases for ${\lambda}_{p}$ fixed at the lasing wavelength or Bragg wavelength of one DFB section, when the difference between the Bragg wavelengths of the two DFB sections, ${\Dalta}{\lambda}_{B}$, is varied. When ${\lambda}_{p}$ is positioned in the renter of the Bragg wavelengths of the two DFB sections, the maximum SP frequency is higher and of the modulation index has better characteristics compared to those of the case for ${\lambda}_{p}$ positioned in the center of the lasing wavelengths of the two DFB sections.

  • A longitudinal modal transmission-line theory(L-MTLT) to analyze the static and dynamic behavior of two-section distributed feedback (DFB) lasers is used. The characteristic impedance and equivalent propagation constant of DFB structure with active layer are derived from L-MTLT. A two-section DFB laser is analogous to a transmission-line network, in which each section is described by transmission-line block corresponding to the equivalent factors. The longitudinal resonant condition of DFB laser based on equivalent transmission-line network is used to reformulate the rate equations so that static and dynamic behavior of two-section DFB lasers with active layer is demonstrated and analyzed accurately.

  • The method of characteristic matrix used in the calculation of multi-layered optical coating is applied to the analysis of DFB waveguide with arbitrary structure of grating by plecewise approximation where the DFB structure is devided into many sections in which the gain and period, amplitude and phase of DFB structure are assuced to be constant in each section. The DFB structure with two section is analyzed using this method of C-matrix. The possible applications for photonic devices using DFB waveguides are proposed.

  • This study was investigated to know the effects of diflubenzuron(DFB) on the larval silkgland development of the silk-worm, Bombyx mori (L.). It has been known as a prohibitor of chitin synthesis mostly on the species of the Order Lepidoptera. In this work, the effects of the DFB concentrations (2.5$\times$10$\^$-1/,2.5$\times$10$\^$-2/, and 2.5$\times$10$\^$-3/$\mu\textrm{g}$/$\mu$l on the various larval stages, were investigated in terms on the silkgland. The macro- and microstructure of cell membrane of silkgland, and the differences of silkgland weight and water contents treated by DFB are also surveyed. As the tesults, the silkgland weight depended sensitively on not the DFB concentration but the DFB treatment period. The longer DFB treatment period, the lighter dried silkgland weight and the heavier water content of the silkgland. White opaque(WO) emerged in the middle silkgland of DFB treated larva. From the scanning election microscope observation, the cell membrane of silkgland of DFB treated larva was distinctly more compact compared to that of control. The WO was evidently resulted from the obstacles of normal transformation of silk protein through the cell membrane of middle silkgland.

  • Effects of the random fluctuation in grating half-period have been studied by an effective index transfer matrix method in DFB lasers. The laser facets are assumed to be perfectly antireflection coated, and the period fluctuation is modeled as a Gaussian random variable. The random fluctuation breaks spectral symmetry in both uniform-grating and quarter-wavelength -shifted(QWS) DFB lasers, and decreases the effective coupling coefficient. This leads to increased average mirror loss of ${\pm}$1 modes and reduced stopband width in uniform grating DFB lasers, and degradation in the wavelength accuracy and the single mode stability in QWS-DFB lasers. Threshold gain difference decreases with increasing period fluctuation irrespective of grating coupling coefficient in QWS-DFB lasers, while spatial hole-burning effect is exacerbated or alleviated when the normalized coupling coefficient is lower and higher than 1.5, respectively.

  • This paper is the research on SMSR yield improvement of the optical transceiver using modulated DFB laser. In general, the wavelength of DFB laser optical transceiver are 1310, 1490 and 1550 nm. Usually SMSR in modulated DFB is difficult to improve as low as 30 dB because of high slop efficiency trade off. In modulation condition, we studied SMSR improvement according to adjust bias current, extinction ratio and optical line terminal receiver sensitivity. As our test results, we can found a method how to improve SMSR for optical transceiver for long distance.

  • A novel ultracompact polarization beam-splitter (PBS) combining two plasmonic multimode interference couplers (P-MMICs) and DFB guiding structure is implemented. The $2{\times}1$ and $1{\times}2$ P-MMICs are designed to collect the polarized powers of TE and TM modes reflected by or transmitted through an internal DFB structure. The simulation results show that the designed DFB-assisted PBS is very short (about $75{\mu}m$), and has a low insertion loss, a high extinction ratio, and a broad bandwidth of 20 nm.
