  • The purpose of this study is to suggest improvements of pharmacy field in the KDC 6th edition. To achieve this purpose, first, this study reviewed academic area and system of pharmacy. Second, we analyzed headings of pharmacy field from first edition to 6th edition. Third, we analyzed change process of classification items in pharmacy field. Forth, we investigated general problems concerning pharmacy field in the KDC 6th edition based on the comparative analysis with DDC, NLMC, and Research Field Code by Korean Research Foundation. As a result, pharmacy field of KDC has never changed since its 4th edition. And then, this study was added new subjects related to sections and subsections of pharmacy and suggested modern terminology. Also newly assigned pharmaceutics industry, cancer treatment and biological pharmaceutics fields under 518.7-.8 which do not use in pharmacy field for efficient classification.

  • This study intends to analyze the library classification of agriculture in DDC, from the Int edition to the 21th edition. Since Dewey Decimal Classification(DDC) was the first published in 1876, number of total items increased significantly a newly-organized and subdivision of them in the 8th, 10th and 12th edition. According as the discipline developed and was specialized, the agricultural division in DDC was fractionized, and new subjects were continuously added to it. After that time the first edition, the major changes arranged an class and order in the 15th and 17th edition. That is to say, ‘Farm economics’ in 631.1 was relocated to 338.1 in the 17th and ‘Veterinary sciences’ in 619 was relocated to 636.089 in the 15th. Especially, up to now ‘Farm Economics’ deals with an important branch in the science of agriculture. Here the matter of argue heatedly arranges it from economics to agriculture.

  • This study intends to 1)conform the possibility to transform the enumerated scheme into the faceted scheme, 2)review general theories on facet structure employed in DDC 780, and 3) analyze the facet structure of music. Findings are 1) The facet structure of DDC synthesize the standard subdivisions or specific facet indicators with basic facet. 2) facet indicator 0 is in use to indicate standard subdivision or general principle of music. and facet indicator 1 to general principles and musical forms. DDC has transformed the entire system into the facet structure through its revisions. Especially the music transformed into the facet structure employes the facet indicators and applies them to all the systems in music. But the notation have sometimes twofold meanings, and no ability to differentiate the meanings in the same notation.

  • To analyze the impact of word embedding on book titles, this study utilized word embedding models (Word2vec, GloVe, fastText) to generate embedding vectors from book titles. These vectors were then used as classification features for automatic classification. The classifier utilized the k-nearest neighbors (kNN) algorithm, with the categories for automatic classification based on the DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification) main class 300 assigned by libraries to books. In the automatic classification experiment applying word embeddings to book titles, the Skip-gram architectures of Word2vec and fastText showed better results in the automatic classification performance of the kNN classifier compared to the TF-IDF features. In the optimization of various hyperparameters across the three models, the Skip-gram architecture of the fastText model demonstrated overall good performance. Specifically, better performance was observed when using hierarchical softmax and larger embedding dimensions as hyperparameters in this model. From a performance perspective, fastText can generate embeddings for substrings or subwords using the n-gram method, which has been shown to increase recall. The Skip-gram architecture of the Word2vec model generally showed good performance at low dimensions(size 300) and with small sizes of negative sampling (3 or 5).

  • There is increasing importance of a system to reorganize explosive expansion of internet information resources efficiently; therefore, an increasing concern about classification system as an instrument for facilitating an access to a specific subject and improving efficiency in information retrieval. Comparing the hierarchical structure and access methodology of internet-based classification system with those of library classification such as Dewey Decimal Classification through their structural aspects and retrival process, this paper proposes the proper classification system in internet environment.

  • This study applied automatic classification using table of contents (TOC) text for 6,253 social science books from a newly arrived list collected by a university library. The k-nearest neighbors (kNN) algorithm was used as a classifier, and the ten divisions on the second level of the DDC's main class 300 given to books by the library were used as classes (labels). The features used in this study were keywords extracted from titles and TOCs of the books. The TOCs were obtained through the OpenAPI from an Internet bookstore. As a result, it was found that the TOC features were good for improving both classification recall and precision. The TOC was shown to reduce the overfitting problem of imbalanced data with its rich features. Law and education have high topic specificity in the field of social sciences, so the only title features can bring good classification performance in these fields.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the various processes and patterns to build or synthesize class numbers in the 800 class of the Dewey Decimal Classification, Edition 20(1989). The results of the analysis are as follows: 1. The 800(Literature and rhetoric) class in the DDC system is the main class added analytico-synthetic principle positively to an enumerative scheme. 2. The facets to be a n.0, pplied in literature are language literary form literary period ; kind, scope, or medium ; notation 08(collection) or 09(criticism) literary feature, subject, author, etc. 3. In the 800 class, there are the five tables of precedence for literary forms aspects ; specific kinds of persons ; literary, period in relation to the aspects for works treating more than one literary form subforms, aspects and literary periods in the works treating a specific literary form. 4. The basic number synthesis of literary works proceeds through the various facets in the following sequence, as far as necessary for the item : base no. + literary form + literary time or period + kind, scope, or medium + notation 08 or 09 + subform + additional notation from T3C and other tables. 5. In view of the multiplicity of facets, their synthesis formulas take the following order : (1) Works about the literature : base no.(schedule) + language(T6) or form(T3B) (2) Works by or about individual author : base no.(schedule) + form (T3A) + period(schedule) + subform(T3A) (3) Works by or about more than one author, not restricted by language facet : base no.(schedule) + period(T1) ; base no.(schedule) + kind, scope, medium(T3B), or feature(T3C), or person(T5). (4) Works by or about more than one author, restricted by language facet : base no.(schedule) + form (T3B) + period(schedule) + subform(T3B) + notation 08 or 09(T3B) ; base no.(schedule) + notation 08 or 09(T3B) + 9(T3C) + area notation(T2) : base no.(schedule) + form (T3B) + notation 008 or 009(T3B) : base no.(schedule) + form (T3B) + kind, scope, medium(T3B) + notation 08 or 09(T3B) + period(schedule). (5) Affiliated literatures for which period numbers are not us base no.(schedule) + form (T3A or T3B), or notation 08 or 09(T3B) : base no.(schedule) + kind, scope, medium(T3B), feature(T3C), or person(T5) 6. The problems in the number building of the 800 class are the complexity and difficulty of number synthesis, the intrinsic weakness of from distinction and the inconvenience of retrieval inherent in the form class. In order to solve these problems, therefore, the citation orders and methods of DDC should be improved and synthesis patterns simplified from the point of view of its applicability and its usefulness in the "literature class".
