In terms of power loss, a MOSFET has two advantages over an IGBT with an antiparallel diode: purely resistive without an offset voltage in conduction and no tail current at turn-off. However, the reverse recovery characteristic of the body diode is so poor that MOSFETs have not yet been available for high-voltage power converters with bidirectional power flow legs. This paper introduces how MOSFETs can be fully applied to high-voltage power converters with bidirectional power flow legs in order to achieve high efficiency. With a bidirectional DC-DC converter with one leg as the simplest example, the basic circuit topology and operating principle are described in detail. The high efficiency and stable operation of the proposed converter are validated through experiments with a 1.5 kW prototype.
This paper discusses a DC distribution system which has been supplied by external AC systems as well as local microturbine distributed generation system in order to demonstrate an overall solution to power quality issue. Based on the dynamic model of the converter, a design procedure has been presented. In this paper, the power flow control in DC distribution system has been achieved by network converters. A suitable control strategy for these converters has been proposed, too. They have DC voltage droop regulator and novel instantaneous power regulation scheme. Also, a novel control system has been proposed for MT converter. Several case studies have been studied and the simulation results show that DC distribution system including microturbine unit can provide the premium power quality using proposed methods.
This paper describes an extension or a pair or multiple load flow solutions and nose curve method developed for voltage stability analysis or AC power systems to AC/DC systems. In this approach the converters are regarded as voltage dependent loads. Assuming that the converters at the unstable (-mode) solution consume the same power equal to the power at the stable (+mode) solution, the unstable solutions or the nose curves arc determined. This method is very efficient since estimating voltage collapse point and voltage stability margin arc determined by a few iterations of multiple load flow solutions. Also the method has the advantages that since the structure or Jacobian matrix is same with that of AC load flow, modal analysis or voltage stability is readily applicable if desired.

This paper proposes a new soft switching technique for a phase-shift controlled bi-directional DC-DC converter. The described converter employs a low profile high frequency transformer and two active full-bridge converters for bidirectional power flow capability. A new soft switching technique is proposed, which guarantees soft switching over wide range (no load to full load) without any additional circuit components. In the proposed switching scheme, the switch pairs in the diagonal position of the converter each are turned on/off simultaneously by the switching signals with a variable duty ratio depending on the phase shift amount, and the converter is operated without freewheeling interval.

Aerodynamic flow control phenomena were investigated with a low-current DC surface discharge plasma actuator. The plasma actuator was found to operate in three different discharge modes with similar discharge currents of about 1 mA or less. Stable continuous DC discharge without audible noise was obtained at higher ballast resistances and lower discharge currents. However, even with continuous DC power input, a low-frequency self-pulsed discharge was obtained at lower ballast resistances, and a high-frequency self-pulsed discharge was obtained at higher set-point currents and higher ballast resistances, both with audible noise. The Schlieren image reveals that the low-frequency self-pulsed mode produces a synthetic jet-like flow implying that a gas heating effect plays a role, even though the discharge current is small. The high-frequency self-pulsed mode produces pulsed jets in a tangent direction, and the continuous DC mode produces a steady straight pressure wave. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) images reveal that the induced flow field by the low-frequency self-pulsed mode has flow propagating in the radial direction and centered between the electrodes. The high-frequency self-pulsed mode and continuous DC mode produce flow from the anode to the cathode. The perturbed region downstream of the cathode is larger in the high-frequency self-pulsed mode with similar maximum speeds.
The design of DC-DC converters for power electronic interfaces in power management systems for Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) is a very challenging task. In this paper, the considered topology is the hi-directional buck-boost converter and inverter system. If we make the converter side DC link current the same as the inverter side DC link current in a converter-inverter system, no current will flow through the BC link capacitor and as a result, no DC link voltage variation occurs. This leads to the possibility of reducing small th size of DC link capacitors which are expensive, bulky. Therefore we propose the converter current controller which can manage to match inverter and converter current at the DC link.

This paper deals with a full functional simulation of UPFC (Unified Power Flow Controller) which is a next generation FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) technology. Through analysis and modeling of he UPFC, power flow control is simulated. Active and reactive power controls, and input side bus voltage control are performed by EMTDC (Electro-Magnetic Transients in DC systems) which is a general purpose time domain simulation program for simulating power systems transients and its controls. Dynamic performances of the UPFC are verified by simulation results.
The economic dispatch problem is important in both power system planning and operation, although there have been major advances in defining and solving more complete Optimal Power Flow(OPF) problems, there exists a need for constrained economic dispatch techniques which, though not as rigorous or as exact an OPF, are fast enough to be used on desktop computers. This paper presents a DC-OPF algorithm that is based upon Relative-Contribution Index in Generators. The transmission constraints are modeled as linear constraint based on a DC-Power-Flow model. An detailed illustrative example is presented.
A bidirectional dc-dc converter is used in battery energy storage systems owing to the growing requirements of a charging and discharging mode of battery. The magnetic coupling of output or input inductors in parallel-connected multi modules of a bidirectional dc-dc converter is often utilized to reduce the peak-to-peak ripple size of the inductor current. This study proposes a novel design guideline to achieve minimal ripple size of the inductor current under bidirectional power flow. The newly proposed design guideline of optimized coupling factor is applicable to the buck and boost operation modes of a bidirectional dc-dc converter. Therefore, the coupling factor value of the coupled inductor does not have to be optimized separately for buck and boost operation modes. This new observation is explained using the theoretical model of coupled inductor and confirmed through simulation and experimental test.
Bidirectional DC/DC converters allows transfer of power between two dc sources, in either direction. Due to their ability to reverse the direction of flow of power, they are being increasingly used in many applications such as battery charger/dischargers, dc uninterruptible power supplies, electrical vehicle motor drives, aerospace power systems, telecom power supplies, etc. This paper proposes a new bidirectional Sepic/zeta converter. It has low swicthing loss and low conduction loss due to auxiliary communicated circuit and synchronous rectifier operation, respectively. Because of positive and buck/boost-like DC voltage transfer function(M=D/1-D), the proposed converter is very desirable for use in distributed power system . The proposed converter also has both transformerless version and transformer one.
