DC distribution has several differences compared to AC distribution. DC distribution has a higher efficiency than AC distribution when distributing electricity at the same voltage level. Accordingly, power can be transferred further with low-voltage DC. In addition, power flow in a DC grid system is produced by only a voltage difference in magnitude. Owing to these differences, operation of a DC grid system significantly differs from that of an AC system. In this paper, the power flow problem in a bipolar-type DC grid with unbalanced load conditions is organized and solved. Control strategy of energy storage system on a slow time scale with power references obtained by solving an optimization problem regarding the DC grid is then proposed. The proposed strategy is verified with computer simulations.
This paper presents a high-efficiency power conditioning system (PCS) for grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) modules. The proposed PCS consists of a step-up DC-DC converter and a single-phase DC-AC inverter for the grid-connected PV modules. A soft-switching step-up DC-DC converter is proposed to generate a high DC-link voltage from the low PV module voltage with a high-efficiency. A DC-link voltage controller is presented for constant DC-link voltage regulation. A half-bridge inverter is used for the single-phase DC-AC inverter for grid connection. A grid current controller is suggested to supply PV electrical power to the power grid with a unity power factor. Experimental results are obtained from a 180 W grid-connected PV module system using the proposed PCS. The proposed PCS achieves a high power efficiency of 93.0 % with an unity power factor for a 60 Hz / 120 Vrms AC power grid.

The paper presents a novel DC grid connection topology and control strategy for doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind power generation system. In order to achieve the wind power conversion, the stator side converter and the rotor side converter is used to implement the DFIG control based on the indirect air-gap flux orientation, and a DC/DC converter is used for the DFIG system to DC grid connection. The maximum power point tracking and DC voltage droop control can also be implemented for the proposed DFIG system. Finally, a 4-terminal DFIG-based multi-terminal DC grid system is developed by Matlab to validate the availability of the proposed system and control strategy.
In recent years, understanding the dynamics of DC distribution system has become critically important due mainly to the increasing needs for the interconnection of DC distributed generators and the (DC-based) electric vehicle (EV) charging systems. In this paper, the characteristics of the DC grid system connected to the compact proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has been studied. In particular, the voltage and current transient phenomena were measured by varying the load of the DC grid system. Also, the voltage and current ripple were measured at the different load conditions. Our experimental results clearly manifested that the study contributes to the establishment of fundamental method to characterize the small DC grid system including distributed generation.

This paper proposes a new power conditioning system for the fuel cell power generation, which consists of a ZVS DC-DC converter and 3-phase inverter. The ZVS DC-DC converter with a digital controller boosts the fuel cell voltage of 26-50V up to 400V, and the grid-tie inverter controls the active power delivered to the grid. The operation of proposed power conditioning system was verified through simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC software. The feasibility of hardware implementation was verified through experimental works with a laboratory prototype, which was built with 1.2kW PEM fuel-cell stack, 1kW DC-DC converter, and 3kW PWM inverter. The proposed system can be utilized to commercialize an interconnection system for the fuel-cell power generation.

This paper introduces a coordinated droop control for the stand-alone DC micro-grid, which is composed of photo-voltaic generator, wind power generator, engine generator, and battery storage with SOC (state of charge) management system. The operation of stand-alone DC micro-grid with the coordinated droop control was analyzed with computer simulation. Based on simulation results, a hardware simulator was built and tested to analyze the performance of proposed system. The developed simulation model and hardware simulator can be utilized to design the actual stand-alone DC micro-grid and to analyze its performance. The coordinated droop control can improve the reliability and efficiency of the stand-alone DC micro-grid.
This paper proposes a dc error compensation algorithm using dq-synchronous coordinate transform digital phase-locked-loop in single-phase grid-connected converters. The dc errors are caused by analog to digital conversion and grid voltage during measurement. If the dc offset error is included in the phase-locked-loop system, it can cause distortion in the grid angle estimation with phase-locked-loop. Accordingly, recent study has dealt with the integral technique using the synchronous reference frame phase-locked-loop method. However, dynamic response is slow because it requires to monitor one period of grid voltage. In this paper, the dc offset error compensation algorithm of the improved response characteristic is proposed by using the synchronous reference frame phase-locked-loop. The simulation and the experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed dc offset error compensation algorithm.
Power exchanges between the grid and the battery through a bidirectional DC-DC converter are essential for DC microgrid systems. In general, the battery is charged when the grid is connected, and the system is powered by the battery when the grid is disconnected. In this mode transition, the saturation of the voltage controller slows down output response and produces large transient errors in DC link voltage. To solve this problem, a novel anti-windup design is proposed to improve anti-windup performance further. The proposed method stabilizes DC bus voltage through a wider range of battery voltage with faster transition compared with that of conventional methods. The proposed method is verified through an experimental setup composed of a 125 W laboratory-scale DC microgrid system.
