Power quality promotion has received increasing attention because of the wide use of semiconductor devices in recent decades. Reactive power regulation is crucial to ensuring the stable operation of power systems. In this study, a continuous reactive power controller, which is referred to as a parallel-connected magnetic energy recovery switch (MERS), is developed to regulate voltage or power factor in power grids. First, the operating principle is introduced, and a mathematical model is built. Second, a new control method for restraining current harmonics and the peak voltages of capacitors is presented. Using the proposed method, the MERS shows a wide range in terms of reactive power compensation. Finally, the performance of the proposed controller is demonstrated through computer simulations and experiments. Unlike STATCOMs, the proposed controller entails low losses, adopts a small dc capacitor, and offers ease of use.
A single active capacitor snubber-assisted soft-switching sinewave pulse modulation utility-interactive power conditioner with a three-winding flyback high frequency transformer link and a bidirectional active power switch in its secondary side has been proposed. With the aid of the switched-capacitor quasi-resonant snubber cell, the high frequency switching devices in the primary side of the proposed DC-to-AC sinewave power inverter can be turned-off with ZVS commutation. In addition to this, the proposed power conditioner in the DCM can effectively take the advantages of ZCS turn-on commutation. Its output port is connected directly to the utility AC power source grid. At the end, the prototype of the proposed HF-UPC is built and tested in experiment. Its power conversion conditioning and processing circuit with a high frequency flyback transformer link is verified and the output sinewave current is qualified in accordance with the power quality guidelines of the utility AC interactive power systems.
A new type of topology with medium-frequency-transformer (MFT) isolation for medium voltage wind power generation systems is proposed in this paper. This type of converter is a high density power conversion system, with high performance features suitable for next generation wind power systems in either on-shore or off-shore applications. The proposed topology employs single-phase cascaded multi-level AC-AC converters on the grid side and three phase matrix converters on the generator side, which are interfaced by medium frequency transformers. This avoids DC-Link electrolytic capacitors and/or resonant L-C components in the power flow path thereby improving the power density and system reliability. Several configurations are given to fit different applications. The modulation and control strategy has been detailed. As two important part of the whole system, a novel single phase AC-AC converter topology with its reliable six-step switching technique and a novel symmetrical 11-segment modulation strategy for two stage matrix converter (TSMC) is proposed at the special situation of medium frequency chopping. The validity of the proposed concept has been verified by simulation results and experiment waveforms from a scaled down laboratory prototype.
A grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system comprised of multicrystalline silicon (mc-Si) modules was installed in a cold climate region in the U.S. This roof-mounted stationary PV system is a real-world application of PV for building energy generation in International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) Climate Zone 5 (and possibly similar climate zones such as 6, 7 and 8), and it served the purposes of research, demonstration, and education. The importance of this work is highlighted by the fact that there has been less emphasis on solar PV system in this region of the U.S. because of climate and latitude challenges. The system is equipped with an extensive data acquisition system capable of collecting performance and meteorological data while visually displaying real-time and historical data through an interactive online interface. Experimental data was collected and analyzed for the system over a one-year period with the focus of the study being on measurements of power production, energy generation, and efficiency. The annual average daily solar insolation incident upon the array was found to be $4.37kWh/m^2$. During the first year of operation, the PV system provided 5,801 kWh (1,264 kWh/kWp) of usable AC electrical energy, and it was found to operate at an annual average conversion efficiency and PR of 10.6 percent and 0.79, respectively. The annual average DC to AC conversion efficiency of the inverter was found to be 94 percent.
In photovoltaic system, the characteristic of photovoltaic module such as open circuit voltage and short circuit current will be changed because of cell temperature and solar radiation. Therefore, a boost converter of the PV system connects between the output of photovoltaic system and DC link capacitor of grid connected inverter as controlling duty ratio for maximum power point tracking(MPPT). This paper shows the dynamic characteristic of the boost converter by comparing single-loop control algorithm and two-loop control algorithm using both analog and digital control. The proposed both compensation method has been verified with computer simulation and simulation results obtained demonstrate the validity of the proposed control schemes.
Recently, interest in the DC transmission is rapidly increasing worldwide. In many countries and leading companies are prior to the aggressive development of HVDC technology and application. Especially, VSC-HVDC system has been widely applied to transfer power at long distance between power plant and power consumption area. Therefore in this paper, we analyzed the benefit-cost of VSC-HVDC system which has more advantages than existing transmission system. The proposed system is MMC(Modular Multilevel Converter) VSC-HVDC system that have stability of Power Grid, interconnect Large-scale New Power Generation Plants by prevents Blackout. And MMC VSC-HVDC system Reduced the loss importing foreign systems. And the benefits were calculated in four stages, and the costs were applied to the actual project. By evaluating the various avoidance costs compared to the benefit-cost, it was confirmed that MMC VSC-HVDC system was advantageous in system stability and economic and social benefits.
CIGS 박막 태양전지는 일반적으로 soda-lime glass(SLG)를 기판으로 사용하여 SLG/Mo/CIGS/CdS/ZnO/ITO/Grid의 구조로 제작된다.
A single-stage AC-AC converter has been designed for a wind energy conversion system (WECS) that eliminates multistage operation and DC-link filter elements, thus resolving size, weight, and reliability issues. A simple switching strategy is used to control the switches that changes the variable-frequency AC output of an electrical generator to a constant-frequency supply to feed into a distributed electrical load/grid. In addition, a modified random sinusoidal pulse width modulation (RSPWM) technique has been developed for the designed converter to make the overall system more efficient by increasing generating power capacity and reducing the effects of inter-harmonics and sub-harmonics generated in the WECS. The technique uses carrier and reference waves of variable switching frequency to calculate the firing angles of the switches of the converter so that the three-phase output voltage of the converter is very close to a sine wave with reduced THD. A comparison of the performance of the proposed RSPWM technique with the conventional SPWM demonstrated that the power generated by a turbine in the proposed approximately increased by 5% to 10% and THD reduces by 40% both in voltage and current with respect to conventional SPWM.

High temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets for large-capacity energy storage system need to be composed of toroid magnets with high energy density, low leakage magnetic fields, and easy installation. To realize such a large capacity of a toroid HTS magnet, an HTS cable with large current capacity would be preferred because of the limited DC link voltage and instantaneous high power required for compensation of the disturbance in the power grid. In this paper, the optimal operating strategies of the SMES for peak load reduction of the microgrid system were calculated according to the load variation characteristics, and the effect of compensation of the frequency change in microgrid with a SMES were also simulated. Based on the result of the simulation, key design parameters of SMES coil were presented for two cases to define the specification of the HTS cable with large current capacities for winding of HTS toroid coils, which will be need for development of the HTS cable as a future work.
We are developing a 22.9 kV/25 MVA superconducting fault current limiting(SFCL) system for a power distribution network. A Bi-2212 bulk SFCL element, which has the merits of large current capacity and high allowable electric field during fault of the power network, was selected as a candidate for our SFCL system. In this work, we experimentally investigated important characteristics of the 190 kVA Bi-2212 SFCL element in its application to the power grid e.g. DC voltage-current characteristic, AC loss, current limiting characteristic during fault, and so on. Some experimental data related to thermal and electromagnetic behaviors were also compared with the calculated ones based on numerical method. The results show that the total AC loss at rated current of the 22.9 kV/25 MVA SFCL system, consisting of one hundred thirty five 190 kVA SFCL elements, becomes likely 763 W, which is excessively large for commercialization. Numerically calculated temperature of the SFCL element in some sections is in good agreement with the measured one during fault. Local temperature distribution in the190 kVA SFCL element is greatly influenced by non-uniform critical current along the Bi-2212 bulk SFCL element, even if its non-uniformity becomes a few percentages.
