Formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) including trihalomethans (THMs), haloacetic acid (HAAs), haloacetonitriles (HANs) and others from chlorination of algogenic organic matter (AOM) of Microcystis sp., a blue-green algae. AOM of Microcystis sp. exhibited a high potential for DBPs formation. HAAs formation potential was higher than THMs and HANs formation potential. The percentages of dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) formation potential were 43.4% and 51.4% in the total HAAs formation potential. In the case of HANs formation potential, percentage of dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) formation potential was 97.7%. Other DBPs were aldehydes and nitriles such as acetaldehyde, methylene chloride, isobutyronitrile, cyclobutanecarbonitrile, pentanenitrile, benzaldehyde, propanal, 2-methyl, benzyl chloride, (2-chloroethyl)-benzene, benzyl nitrile, 2-probenenitrile and hexanal.
As a result of algal bloom, algal organic matters (AOMs) are rapidly increased in surface water. AOMs can act as precursors for the formation of harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs), which are serious problems in water treatment and human health. The main aim of this study is to characterize the formation of DBPs from AOMs produced by three different algae such as Oscillatoria sp., Anabaena sp., and Microcystis aeruginosa under different algal growth phases. In an effort to examine formation of DBPs during chlorination, chloroform (TCM), dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) were determined under various CT (product of disinfectant concentration and contact time, mg·min/L) values. Generally, the amounts of DBPs tended to increase with increasing CT values at the most growth phases. However, there was a significant difference between the amounts of DBPs produced by the three algal species at different growth phases. This result is likely due to the chemical composition variability of AOM from different algae at different growth phases. In addition, the effect of pre-ozonation on coagulation for the removal of AOMs from three algal species was investigated. The pre-ozonation had a positive effect on the coagulation/flocculation of AOMs.
This study was carried out to investigate the formation of DBPs(Disinfection By-products) such as trihalomethane(THMs) and haloacetic acid(HAAs) by chlorination in raw water and finished water of Water Treatment Plant(WTP). The formation of THMs was increased with the increase of pH and reaction time. HAAs was found as a high formation at a pH 7 and low formation at pH 9. THMFP(Trihalomethane Formation Potential) was the highest formation potential in raw water of Pu-1 and the lowest in raw water of Pa-1. In case of HAAFP(Haloacetic acid formation potential), So-1 showed the highest value, while Pa-1 showed the lowest value. It was investigated the relationship between HAAs and organic matters which were described as DOC(dissolved organic carbon) and $UV_{254}$. In both DOC and $UV_{254}$ versus HAAFP, Pu-1 showed the good correlation coefficients($r^2$) with 0.95 and 0.84, respectively. For three WTP investigated, DBPs(THMs + HAAs) was shown over the range of $42.00{\sim}49.36{\mu}g/L$. This result might be due to the different characteristic of organic matters in raw water and the difference of chlorine dosage for a water treatment.

Formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) including trihalomethans (THM), haloacetic acid (HAA) and haloacetonitriles (HAN) from chlorination of extracellular organic matter (EOM) and cells + intracellular organic matter (IOM) of Microcystis sp., a blue-green algae, during decomposed period was investigated. Microcystis sp. cells + IOM and EOM of Microcystis sp. exhibited a high potential for DBP formation. HAAFP (formation potential) was higher than THMFP during decomposed period. In the variations of HAAFP species during decomposed period, the ratio of di-HAAFP species was gradually decreased and the ratio of tri-HAAFP species was gradually increased in the case of EOM during decomposed period, while the opposite result was in the case of cells + IOM during decomposed period. In the variations of HANFP species during decomposed period, the ratio of di-HANFP species was much higher than the ratio of tri-HAAFP species.
This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of a membrane bioreactor filled with high concentration of powdered activated carbon (HCPAC-MBR) to reduce DBPs at the drinking water treatment. The pilot system was installed after the rapid sand filtration process whose plant was the conventional treatment process. The removal efficiencies of DBPs were measured during pilot operation period of 2 years. HAA and THM removal rates could be maintained around 80~90% without any troubles and then tremendous reduction of HAA and THM reactivity were observed more than 52%. The average removal rate of HAA formation potential (FP) and THM formation potential (FP) were 70.5% and 67.6% respectively. It is clear that the PAC membrane bioreactor is highly applicable for advanced water treatment to control DBPs.

This study investigated formation potential of 16 disinfection byproducts (DBPs) (e.g., g trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, haloacetonitriles, chloral hydrate, etc.) upon chlorination of raw water at various pH, water temperatures, and chlorine doses. We also compared the DBP formation potential (DBPFP) of raw and filtered waters. Most of DBPs were formed higher at neutral pH, but dichloroacetic acid, chloroform, and bromodichloromethane were formed higher over pH 7. As water temperature increased, concentrations of chloral hydrate, haloacetic acids, and haloacetonitriles linearly increased while that of trihalomethanes exponentially increased. Formation of chloral hydrate, trihalomethanes, and trihaloacetonitriles significantly increased up to 2.0 mg/L $Cl_2$ of chlorine addition, then gradually increased at 2.0~5.6 mg/L $Cl_2$. Filtered water formed less DBPs than raw water in most DBPs except for trihalomethanes.
While a range of natural organic matter (NOM) types can generate high levels of disinfection by-products (DBPs) after chlorination, there is little understanding of which specific compounds act as precursors. Use of eight model compounds allows linking of explicit properties to treatability and DBP formation potential (DBPFP). The removal of model compounds by various treatment processes and their haloacetic acid formation potential (HAAFP) before and after treatment were recorded. The model compounds comprised a range of hydrophobic (HPO) and hydrophilic (HPI) neutral and anionic compounds. On the treatment processes, an ozone oxidation process was moderate for control of model compounds, while the HPO-neutral compound was most treatable with activated carbon process. Biodegradation was successful in removing amino acids, while coagulation and ion exchange process had little effect on neutral molecules. Although compared with the HPO compounds the HPI compounds had low HAAFP the ozone oxidation and biodegradation were capable of increasing their HAAFP. In situations where neutral or HPI molecules have high DBPFP additional treatments may be required to remove recalcitrant NOM and control DBPs.

This study aims to identify the relationship between characteristics of aqueous organic matter and chlorination by-products formation potential according to temporal effect of Juam reservoir in Sun-Choen. The molecular weight distribution and chemical composition of precursors and their relationship with disinfection by-products(DBPs) were investigated. Most of the organic matters was responsible for the major DBP precursors in the raw water are small compounds with a molecular weight less than IKDa, Aromatic contents determined by SUVA correlated well with DBPs, THMs, and HAAs formation. Especially, THMFP/DOC showed better correlation with SUVA than HAAFP/DOC and DBPFP/DOC with SUVA in Juam reservoir. Therefore, effective removal of small molecules or hydrophobic organic matter prior to disinfection process will significantly reduce the DBP concentration in the finished water.

UV-induced transformations in the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and the subsequent effects on the disinfection by-product formation potential (DBPFP) were investigated using the mixtures of the two humic substances with different sources, and two different size fractions of Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA). 7 day-photodegradation resulted in the decrease of specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA) of the mixtures as well as the specific DBPFP. After the irradiation, however, higher specific DBPFP values were consistently observed at the same range of the SUVA values. This suggests that non UV-absorbing components, generated by the UV-irradiation, may contribute to the formation of DBPs. Two different molecular size fractions of SRFA showed dissimilar responses to photodegradation. The behavior was also influenced by the types of the DBPs generated. Higher levels of trihalomethenes (THMs) were formed per organic carbon for the high molecular fraction compared to the low molecular fraction, whereas no differences were found in the formation of haloacetic acids (HAAs) between the two different size fractions. The formation of the two types of DBPs also differed by the irradiation times. Specific formation potential of THMs consistently increased upon the irradiation, whereas HAAs showed the initial increase followed by the decrease in their specific formation potential.
Formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) including trihalomethans (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) from chlorination of six different species (Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus sp., Anabaena cylindrical, Microcystis aeruginosa, Asterionella formosa and Aulacoseira sp.) of algal extracellular organic matter (EOM). The EOM characteristics evaluation of six algal species reaching at the stationary phase in the growth curve showed most of its SUVA254 showed below 1 and this means hydrophilic organic matter is much higher than hydrophobic organic matter. Chloroform formation potential (CFFP), dichloroacetic acid formation potential (DCAAFP) and trichloroacetic acid formation potential (TCAAFP) were mainly composed of THMFP and HAAFP in the EOM of various algal species. In the case of THMFP/DOC and HAAFP/DOC values, EOM of blue-green algae has appeared highest and EOM of green algae and diatom in order. THMFP/DOC was higher than HAAFP/DOC in EOM of blue-green algae. In comparison of formation potential by unit DOC composed of HAAFP in algal species EOM, DCAAFP/DOC was 1.5 times to 7.5 time higher than TCAAFP/DOC in the EOM of blue-green algae, while DCAAFP/DOC was found to be relatively high compared to TCAAFP/DOC in the EOM of green algae and diatom.
