The damping ratio ${\xi}$ of the unit-step response of a second-order discrete system is a function of only the location of the closed-loop poles and is not directly related to the location of the system zero. However, the peak overshoot of the response is the function of both the damping ratio ${\xi}$ and an angle ${\alpha}$, which is the phasor angle of the damped sinusoidal response and is determined by the relative location of the zero with respect to the closed-loop poles. Therefore, if the zero and the open-loop poles are relatively adjusted, through pole-zero cancellation, to maintain the desired (or designed) closed-loop poles, the damping ratio ${\xi}$ will also be maintained, while the angle ${\alpha}$ changes. Accordingly, when the closed-loop system poles are fixed, the peak overshoot is considered as a function of the angle ${\alpha}$ or the system zero location. In this paper the effects of the relative location of the zero on the system performance of a second-order discrete system is studied, and a design method of digital compensator which achieves a minimum peak overshoot while maintaining the desired system mode and the damping ratio of the unit step response is presented.
Influence of solution treatment (T4) and peak-aging (T6) on damping capacity was investigated in permanent-mold cast Mg-3%Nd alloy. In as-cast state, the microstructure was characterized by eutectic $Mg_{12}Nd$ intermetallic phase network in the intergranular region. T4 treatment resulted in a dissolution of the eutectic particles, but small amount of the particles still remained in the microstructure. After T6 treatment, nano-sized ${\beta}^{\prime}(Mg_{12}Nd)$ particles were precipitated within the matrix. T4 microstructure showed higher damping capacity than as-cast and T6 ones. In view of the microstructural features, this may well be associated with the dissolution of second-phase particles which play a role in pinning the dislocations acting as a damping source.

This paper proposes the method of exactly identifying both viscous and friction damping from free vibration response to SDOF structure. Both displacement and acceleration free vibration responses to SDOF system, in which both viscous and friction damping are considered as its damping mechanism, are discussed to verify the proposed method. The relationship for identifying both viscous and friction damping is derived from two consecutive amplitudes of displacement or acceleration peak response. The proposed method is verified through the numerical simulation for an assumed SDOF system consisting of mass, both viscous and friction damping and spring components.

This manuscript introduces a new damping device which is composed of a water tank and a pendulum. The new damping device can be tuned to multiple frequencies. In addition, it has a higher energy dissipation capacity when compared with the conventional Tuned Liquid Dampers (TLDs). In order to evaluate the efficiency of this new damping device a series of free vibration and forced vibration tests were conducted on a scaled down single-story one-bay steel frame. Two different configurations were studied for the mass of the pendulum that included a completely and a partially submerged mass. It was observed that the completely submerged configuration led to 44% higher damping ratio when compared with the conventional TLD. In addition, the completely submerged configuration reduced the peak displacement response of the structure 1.6 times more than the conventional TLD. The peak acceleration response of the structure equipped with the new damping device was reduced twice more than the conventional TLD. It was also found that, when the excitation frequency is lower than the resonance frequency, the conventional TLD performs better than the partially submerged configuration of the new damping device.
In a nonlinear site response analysis which is performed in time domain, small strain damping is modeled as viscous damping through use of various forms of Rayleigh damping formulations. Small strain damping of soil is known to be independent of the loading frequency, but the viscous damping is greatly influenced by the loading frequency. The type of Rayleigh damping formulation has a pronounced influence on the dependence. This paper performs a series of nonlinear analyses to evaluate the degree of influence of the viscous damping formulation on Korean soil profiles. Analyses highlight the strong influence of the viscous damping formulation for soil profiles exceeding 30 m in thickness, commonly used in simplified Rayleigh damping formulation overestimating energy dissipation at high frequencies due to artificially introduced damping. When using the full Rayleigh damping formulation and carefully selecting the optimum modes, the artificial damping is greatly reduced. Results are further compared to equivalent linear analyses. The equivalent linear analyses can overestimate the peak ground acceleration even for shallow profiles less than 20 m in thickness.
The radiation of water waves by a heaving truncated circular cylinder with damping plate is solved in the frame of the three-dimensional linear potential theory. The damping plate has a distinct advantage in reducing the motion response of a floating circular cylinder by increasing the added mass and the damping coefficient. Using the matched eigenfunction expansion method, the characteristics of hydrodynamic added mass and the damping coefficient are investigated with various system parameters, such as the radius and submergence depth of the damping plate. It is found that both added mass and the damping coefficient are significantly increased due to the arranged features of the larger damping plate with shallow submergence, which are positive factors as a motion reduction device of the floating offshore platform. Also the numerical results for an oscillating submerged disk show that the added mass is negative and that the damping coefficient has a peak value at resonant frequency when submergence depth is sufficiently small.
Seismic isolation is often used in protecting mission-critical structures including hospitals, data centers, telecommunication buildings, etc. Such structures typically house vibration-sensitive equipment which has to provide continued service but may fail in case sustained accelerations during earthquakes exceed threshold limit values. Thus, peak floor acceleration is one of the two main parameters that control the design of such structures while the other one is peak base displacement since the overall safety of the structure depends on the safety of the isolation system. And in case peak base displacement exceeds the design base displacement during an earthquake, rupture and/or buckling of isolators as well as bumping against stops around the seismic gap may occur. Therefore, obtaining accurate peak floor accelerations and peak base displacement is vital. However, although nominal design values for isolation system and superstructure parameters are calculated in order to meet target peak design base displacement and peak floor accelerations, their actual values may potentially deviate from these nominal design values. In this study, the sensitivity of the seismic performance of structures equipped with linear and nonlinear seismic isolation systems to the aforementioned potential deviations is assessed in the context of a benchmark shear building under different earthquake records with near-fault and far-fault characteristics. The results put forth the degree of sensitivity of peak top floor acceleration and peak base displacement to superstructure parameters including mass, stiffness, and damping and isolation system parameters including stiffness, damping, yield strength, yield displacement, and post-yield to pre-yield stiffness ratio.
The damping ratio $\zeta$ of a continuous 2nd order response which passes all the points of the discrete response of a 2nd order discrete system(envelope curve) is a function of only the location of the closed-loop pole and ie not at all related to the location of the zero. And the peak overshoot of the envelope curve is uniquely specified by the damping ratio $\zeta$, which is a function of solely the closed-loop pole location, and the angle $\alpha$ which is determined by the relative location of the zero with respect to the closed-loop complex pole. Therefore, if the zero slides on the real axis with the closed-loop complex poles being fixed, then the angle $\alpha$ changes however the damping ratio $\zeta$ does not. Accordingly, when the closed-loop system poles are fixed, the peak overshoot is function of $\alpha$ or the system zero. In this thesis the effects of the relative location of the zero on the system performance of a second order discrete system is studied.

A six-degree-of-freedom dynamic model with time-varying mesh stiffness/damping and friction has been developed for the dynamic analysis of a gear driving system. This model includes a spur gear pair, bearing, friction and prime mover. Using Newton???s method, equations of motion for the gear driving system were derived. Two computer programs are developed to calculate mesh stiffness, transmission error and friction force and analyze the dynamics of the modeled system using a time integration method. The influences of mesh stiffness/damping, bearing, and friction affecting the system were investigated by performing eigenvalue analysis and time response analysis. It is found that the reduction of the maximum peak magnitude by friction is decided according to designing the positions of pitch point and maximum peak in the responses.
To predict rolling performance for a barge-type FPSO, the evaluation of correct nonlinear roll damping is critical. The square section of FPSO causes a considerable viscous damping effect. Free roll decay tests were carried out to estimate nonlinear roll damping for a barge-type FPSO, under three different conditions. The roll motion RAO was deduced from model tests in the wave condition of the wideband spectrum. In numerical calculation, the quadratic damping was considered as equivalent linear damping, using the results of free roll decay test. Tested roll performance in the JONSWAP wave spectrum was compared with numerical results. These two results shaw good agreement, in spite of the proximity of peak wave period and roll natural period.
