  • Multiple regression analysis was used for the calculation of pKa values of 15 substituted benzaldoximes by using various types of descriptors as parameters. These descriptors are based on quantum mechanical treatments. They were derived by employing semi-empirical calculation represented by the PM3 model and an Abinitio method expressed by Hartree-Fock(HF) model performed at the 6-311 G(d, p) level of theory. The parameters tested for their ability to represent the variations observed in the experimental pKa(s) are atomic and structural properties including Muliken charges on the atoms of hydroxyl group and C=N bond, the angle $C_6-C_1-C_7$, and length of O-H bond. Molecular properties are also used like energies of HOMO and LUMO, hardness(${\eta}$), chemical potential(${\mu}$), total energy(TE), dipole of molecule(DM), and electrophilicity index(W). The relation between pKa values and each of these parameters of the studied compounds is investigated. Depending on these relations, two sets of parameters were constructed for comparison between the PM3 and HF methods. The results obtained favor the Abinitio method for such applications although both models proved to have high predictive power and have sufficient reliability to describe the effect of substituents on pKa values of benzaldoxime compounds under consideration which is clear from the values of correlation coefficient $R^2$ obtained and the consistency between the experimental and the calculated values.

  • This bio-acoustic study was aimed at classifying the different porcine wasting diseases through sound analysis with emphasis given to differences in the acoustic footprints of coughs in porcine circo virus type 2 (PCV2), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (MH) - infected pigs from a normal cough. A total of 36 pigs (Yorkshire${\times}$Landrace${\times}$Duroc) with average weight ranging between 25-30 kg were studied, and blood samples of the suspected infected pigs were collected and subjected to serological analysis to determine PCV2, PRRS and MH. Sounds emitted by coughing pigs were recorded individually for 30 minutes depending on cough attacks by a digital camcorder placed within a meter distance from the animal. Recorded signals were digitalized in a PC using the Cool Edit Program, classified through labeling method, and analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and discriminant analysis. Input features after classification showed that normal cough had the highest pitch level compared to other infectious diseases (p<0.002) but not statistically different from PRRS and MH. PCV2 differed statistically (p<0.002) from the normal cough and PRRS but not from MH. MH had the highest intensity and all coughs differed statistically from each other (p<0.0001). PCV2 was statistically different from others (p<0.0001) in formants 1, 2, 3 and 4. There was no statistical difference in duration between different porcine diseases and the normal cough (p>0.6863). Mechanisms of cough sound creation in the airway could be used to explain these observed acoustic differences and these findings indicated that the existence of acoustically different cough patterns depend on causes or the animals' respiratory system conditions. Conclusively, differences in the status of lungs results in different cough sounds. Finally, this study could be useful in supporting an early detection method based on the on-line cough counter algorithm for the initial diagnosis of sick animals in breeding farms.

  • This paper deals with dynamic tensile characteristics for the polypropylene used in an IP(Instrument Panel). The polypropylene is adopted in the dash board of a car, especially PAB(Passenger Air Bag) module. Its dynamic tensile characteristics are important because the PAB module undergoes high speed deformation during the airbag expansion. Since the operating temperature of a car varies from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $90^{\circ}C$ according to the specification, the dynamic tensile tests are performed at a low temperature($-30^{\circ}C$), the room temperature($21^{\circ}C$) and a high temperature($85^{\circ}C$). The tensile tests are carried out at strain rates of six intervals ranged from 0.001/sec to 100/sec in order to obtain the strain rate sensitivity. The flow stress decreases at the high temperature while the strain rate sensitivity increases. Tensile tests of polymers are rather tricky since polymer does not elongate uniformly right after the onset of yielding unlike the conventional steel. A new method is suggested to obtain the stress-strain curve accurately. A true stress-strain curve was estimated from modification of the nominal stress-strain curves obtained from the experiment. The modification was carried out with the help of an optimization scheme accompanied with finite element analysis of the tensile test with a special specimen. The optimization method provided excellent true stress-strain curves by enforcing the load response coincident with the experimental result. The material properties obtained from this paper will be useful to simulate the airbag expansion at the normal and harsh operating conditions.

  • Coal tar-coated pipes buried in a domestic nuclear power plant have operated under the cathodic protection. This work conducted the simulation of the coating performance of these pipes using a FEM method. The pipes, being ductile cast iron have been suffered under considerably high cathodic protection condition beyond the appropriate condition. However, cathodic potential measured at the site revealed non-protected status. Converting from 3D CAD data of the power plant to appropriate type for a FEM simulation was conducted and cathodic potential under the applied voltage and current was calculated using primary and secondary current distribution and physical conditions. FEM simulation for coal tar-coated pipe without defects revealed over-protection condition if the pipes were well-coated. However, the simulation for coal tar-coated pipes with many defects predict that the coated pipes may be severely degraded. Therefore, for high risk pipes, direct examination and repair or renewal of pipes are strongly recommended.

  • The technology of supplying the electric power by wireless power transfer (WPT) is expected for the next generation power feeding system since it can supply the power to portable devices without any connectors through large air gap. As such a technology based on strongly coupled electromagnetic resonators is possible to deliver the large power and recharge them seamlessly; it has been considered as a noble option to wireless power charging system in the various power applications. Recently, various HTS wires have now been manufactured for demonstrations of transmission cables, motors, MAGLEV, and other electrical power components. However, since the HTS magnets have a lower index n value intrinsically, they are required to be charged from external power system through leads or internal power system. The portable area is limited as well as the cryogen system is bulkier. Thus, we proposed a novel design of wireless power charging system for superconducting HTS magnet (WPC4SM) based on resonance coupling method. As the novel system makes possible a wireless power charging using copper resonance coupled coils, it enables to portable charging conveniently in the superconducting applications. This paper presented the conceptual design and operating characteristics of WPC4SM using different shapes' copper resonance coil. The proposed system consists of four components; RF generator of 370 kHz, copper resonance coupling coils, impedance matching (IM) subsystem and HTS magnet including rectifier system.

  • We have studied the method of silicon direct bonding using the mixture of $HNO_$, $H_2O_2$, and HF chemicals called the controlled slight etch (CSE) solution for the effective wafer cleaning. CSE, two combinations of oxidizing and etching agents, have been used to clean the silicon surfaces prior to wafer bonding. Two wafers of silicon and silicon dioxide were contacted each other at room temperature and postannealed at $300{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ in $N_2$ ambient for 2.5 h. We have cleaned silicon wafers with the various HF concentrations and characterized the parameters with regard to surface roughness, chemical nature, chemical oxide thickness, and bonding energy. It was observed that the chemical oxide thickness on silicon wafer decreased with increasing HF concentrations. The initial interfacial energy and final energy postannealed at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2.5h measured by the crack propagation method was 122 $mJ/m^2$ and 2.96 $mJ/m^2$, respectively.

  • The capability of PIXE (Proton Induced X-ray Emission) method for the precision measurement of coating thickness has been tested by measuring several gold coated copper plates. Two different experimental methods are applied and compared. The results are compared with those by the weight measurement and proton RBS (Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry). The advantage of the method is that it can be also used for the nondestructive thickness measurement of this layers on large-scaled samples or archeological samples which cannot be placed in a vacuum chamber.

  • Ozone from a pilot-scale ozone generator was treated on fermented pig liquid manure stored in a storage tank in order to reduce odor substances during the process of fermented liquid manure production. The group of ozone treatment showed one less than the organic matter compared that of the control. The preferable condition for characteristic changes was when the ratio of BOD to COD was less than 1.5. Ozone treatment showed better oxidizing power than control as it removed more suspended solids and had less methyl isobutyl ketone(P<0.05). Odor reduction measured by olfactory method was higher in ozone treatment than in control.

  • In this study, a numerical prediction on propulsive performance of a ducted propeller in open water condition was carried out by solving Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equation using computational fluid dynamics(CFD). A configuration of propeller Ka-470 inside duct 19A was considered. Hexahedral grid system was generated by dividing whole computational domain into three separate regions; propeller, duct and outer flow region. A commercial CFD software, ANSYS-CFX was used for numerical simulations. Results were compared with experimental data and showed considerable improvement in accuracy, in comparison to those from surface panel method which is based on potential flow assumption. The results also exhibited the importance of grid system within the gap between the inner surface of duct and blade tip for accurate prediction of propulsive performance of ducted propeller.

  • These experiments were carried out to clarify the effects various kinds of cryoprotectants which were frequently used in freezing embryos of domestic animals on the survival of frozen-thawed mouse embryos. As cryoprotectant, glycerol, DMSO and methanol were used and the procedures of adding them in medium were practiced by one-step or six-step adding method. Morphologically normal mouse embryos developed to blastocyst by in vitro culture after freezing and thawing were transferred to pseudopregnant recipients by surgical procedures. The results obtained in these experiments were summarized as follows: 1. The survival rates of the frozen-thawed 8-cell embryos, morulas and blastocysts following one-step addition of glycerol were 83.6, 80.3 adn 70.3%, respectively, while following six-step addition of glycerol, 69.2, 56.3 and 66.7% respectively. 2. When glycerol, DMSO and methanol were used as cryoprotectant under the same condition of freezing and thawing, the survival rates of frozen-thawed embryos were 74.0, 76.1 and 37.6%, respectively. 3. The implantation rate of embryos transferred to pseudopregnant recipients after freezing and thawing was 49.2%.
