The spanwise flow structure around a rigid smooth circular cylinder model in cross-flow has been investigated based on the experimental data obtained from a series of wind tunnel tests. Surface pressures were collected at five spanwise locations along the cylinder over a Reynolds number range of $1.14{\times}15^5$ to $5.85{\times}10^5$, which covered sub-critical, single-bubble and two-bubble regimes in the critical range. Separation angles were deduced from curve fitted to the surface pressure data. In addition, spanwise correlations and power spectra analyses were employed to study the spatial structure of flow. Results at different spanwise locations show that the transition into single-bubble and two-bubble regimes could occur at marginally different Reynolds numbers which expresses the presence of overlap regions in between the single-bubble regime and its former and later regimes. This indicates the existence of three-dimensional flow around the circular cylinder in cross-flow, which is also supported by the observed cell-like surface pressure patterns. Relatively strong spanwise correlation of the flow characteristics is observed before each transition within the critical regime, or formation of first and second separation-bubbles. It is also noted that these organized flow structures might lead to greater overall aerodynamic forces on a circular cylinder in cross-flow within the critical Reynolds number regime.

In this paper, a variable structure controller(VSC) is used to control the position of the hydraulic servo system subjected to unknown disturbances. The system consists of two cylinders, which connected in series. One cylinder executes position control, the other executes force control to generate disturbances. In order to control each cylinder, interaction must be considered between two cylinders because two cylinders are connected in series. Therefore, the controller is designed regarding interaction between two cylinders as disturbances. Performance of the proposed controller was verified through experiments and compared to PID controller. The experiments showed that the proposed controller had a good performance and robustness.
In this study, a position and force simultaneous trajectory tracking control algorithm is proposed for a driving apparatus that consists of two pneumatic cylinders connected in series. The controller applied to the driving apparatus is composed of a non-interaction controller to compensate for interaction between cylinders and a disturbance observer aimed to reduce the effect of model discrepancy that cannot be compensated by the non-interaction controller. The effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm is proved by experimental results.
Analytic series solution for the problem of transverse magnetic (TM) scattering by an elliptic dielectric cylinder loaded slot is presented for an electric line source illumination. The solution is based on using matching functions and mode matching technique (MMT) and it converges very fast.

A new rotary gravure-offset printing unit is constructed by paralleling a gravure plate cylinder, a blanket cylinder and a impression roller. A Muti-Unit Gravure-Offset Printing Press(MUGOP) equipped with a series of the 3 printing units is utilized for roll-to-roll fine printing. Its core technology is precise over-piling printing of fine patterns. The severe problems of 'slurring' and 'doubling' in typical offset printing are unavoidable, which can be eliminated by applying a soft pad-type blanket cylinder and the unique 'true rolling' technique. Nip pressure between the blanket cylinder and the plate cylinder is measured by the constant pressure control system which equipped with load cells attached on the cylinders' axes. The running circumference of the blanket cylinder is increased to reach the same circumference of the plate cylinder as the pressure increasing, so that the specifications of the blanket cylinder is determined by the relationships of its shore hardness, diameter and nip pressure. When a softer blanket is used, a blanket cylinder of smaller diameter could give higher nip pressure. Realization of the true rolling technique on the MUGOP makes multilayer printing possible as well as fine printing in printed electronics.
This study was carried out to develop soybean thresher which is able to reduce the soybean threshing damage in comparison to the conventional thresher. A threshing cylinder with different diameter of 480 and 384 mm at each end and with one quarter disc pegs of 60 mm radius was developed and attached to the prototype thresher. A conventional thresher which has a threshing cylinder with $\wedge$ type threshing pegs and same diameter of 480 mm at each end was used for comparative test. A series of comparative performance test was conducted using sun-yu and chung-ja soybean. For sun-yu bean, which is white and usually used for soybean paste and soy sauce, the ratio of damaged beans of prototype ranged 2-3% for 330-360 rpm which is recommended cylinder speed by manufacturer. The ratio of damaged beans of conventional thresher was 3-4% for the same range of cylinder speed. chung-ja beans with black color usually shows high damaged ratio compared with white beans, thus cylinder speed of 250-300 rpm is recommended by manufacturer to reduce the damaged ratio. For this range of cylinder speed, the damaged ratio of prototype was 1.3-1.4% and it was 2.7-6.1% for the conventional thresher. Thus prototype is able to reduce the damaged ratio 1.5-5.0% compared with conventional thresher. Prototype shows 0.4% of unthreshed soybean ratio for sun-yu bean in the optimum range of cylinder speed and it was 0.87% for the conventional thresher. For chung-ja bean, the ratio of unthreshed soybean was almost same for both prototype and conventional thresher with the value of 4.0%. The reason of high unthreshed soybean ratio for chung-ja bean compared sun-yu bean is due to the high seed moisture content of 29.11% which is much higher than that of the recommended.
Wave run-up is an important issue in offshore engineering, which is tightly related to the loads on the marine structures. In this study, a series of physical experiments have been performed to investigate the wave run-up around a vertical cylinder in transitional water depth. The wave run-ups of regular waves, irregular waves and focused waves have been presented and the characteristics in frequency domain have been investigated with the FFT and wavelet transform methods. This study focuses on the nonlinear features of the wave run-up and the interaction between the wave run-up and the cylinder. The results show that the nonlinear interaction between the waves and the structures might result wave run-up components of higher frequencies. The wave run-ups of the moderate irregular waves exhibit 2nd order nonlinear characteristics. For the focused waves, the incident waves are of strong nonlinearity and the wavelet coherence analysis reveals that the wave run-up at focal moment contains combined contributions from almost all the frequency components of the focused wave sequence and the contributions of frequency components up to 4th order harmonic levels are recommended to be included.
In this paper history of stresses, strains, radial and circumferential displacements of a functionally graded thick-walled hollow cylinder due to creep phenomenon is investigated. The cylinder is subjected to an arbitrary non-axisymmetric two dimensional thermo-mechanical loading and uniform magnetic field along axial direction. Using equilibrium, strain-displacements and stress-strain relations, the governing differential equations of the problem containing creep strains are derived in terms of radial and circumferential displacements. Since the displacements are varying with time due to creep phenomenon, an analytical solution is not available for these equations. Thus, a semi-analytical procedure based on separation of variables and Fourier series together with a numerical procedure is employed. The numerical results indicate that the non-axisymmetric loading and the material grading index have significant effect on stress redistributions. Moreover, by proper selection of material for any combination of non-axisymmetric loading, one can arrive suitable response for the cylinder to achieve optimal design. With some simplifications, the results are validated with the existing literature.
For a hermetic reciprocating compressor, it has been known that the gas pulsation in the suction line affects the compressor performance, and suction muffler design has been focused on both of noise reduction and minimum pressure drop across the muffler. Some studies have been carried out on the mutual interaction between the gas pulsation and the cylinder pressure to investigate some supercharging effects, but their efforts were limited on rather simple geometries. In this paper, interaction of the gas pulsation in the compressor suction line with cylinder pressure via suction valve motion has been calculated; for the gas pulsation analysis, modeling of Helmholtz resonators in series was used, and for cylinder pressure calculation, energy equations was set up for the gas inside the cylinder. For demonstration of this calculation method, four different types of suction line configurations for a hermetic reciprocating compressor were compared in terms of compressor performance and gas pulsation level.

This paper is concerned with the effect of cylinder wakes upstream on blade characteristics of compressor cascade(NCA 65 series). At first, it is found that the velocity defect ratio of cylinder wake varies according to the acceleration and deceleration in a flow field but, is conserved nearly constant at flow downstream the cascade, irrespective of the flow path in the cascade. When a cylinder wake flows along near the suction surface of the blade, or impinges on the leading edge, the turbulent velocities are supplied on or inside the outer edge of boundary layer near the leading edge of suction surface, and the transition to a transitional or turbulent boundary layers is induced, so that the laminar separation is prevented, but the profile loss increases. The transition of boundary layer to a transitional or turbulent one is strongly related with the strength of added turbulent velocities near the leading edge on the suction surface, which is influenced by the flow path of a cylinder wake.
