The presence of a layer of vegetation which is relevant in river engineering or coastal engineering can modify the overall flow resistance, turbulent characteristics of flow. The patch of vegetation can be modelled and studied in a simple porous cylinder by previous researchers. Fully three dimensional Large Eddy Simulation is conducted in flow past a porous cylinder with a solid volume fraction (SVF) 0f 20%. The porous cylinder of diameter D contains 89 smaller cylinders which diameter is 0.048D in a regular staggered way. Reynolds number based on porous cylinder diameter D and the bulk velocity is 10,000. The large scale shedding is qualitatively similar to the one observed in the non-porous case (SVF=100%). The difference in the dynamics of the separated shear layer and the streamwise flow penetrating through the porous cylinder are compared with those in the non-porous cylinder. In particular, the wake billows form a larger distance from the back of the porous cylinder.

The flow around free end of a finite circular cylinder (FC) embedded in an atmospheric boundary layer has been investigated experimentally. The experiments were carried out in a closed-return type subsonic wind tunnel with varying aspect ratio of the finite cylinder mounted vertically on a flat plate. The wakes behind a 2-D cylinder and a finite cylinder located in a uniform flow were measured for comparison. Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter was about Re=20,000. A hot-wire anemometer was employed to measure the wake velocity and the mean pressure distributions on the cylinder surface were also measured. The flow past the FC free end shows a complicated three-dimensional wake structure and flow phenomenon is quite different from that of 2-D cylinder. The three-dimensional flow structure was attributed to the downwashing counter rotating vortices separated from the FC free end. As the FC aspect ratio decreases, the vortex shedding frequency decreases and the vortex formation length increases compared to that of 2-D cylinder. Due to the descending counter-rotating twin-vortex, near the FC free end, regular vortex shedding from the cylinder is suppressed and the vortex formation region is hardly distinguished. Around the center of the wake, the mean velocity for the FC located in atmospheric boundary layer has large velocity deficit compared to that of uniform flow.
Two dimensional slow viscous flow between a rotating cylinder and a translating plate is investigated using Stokes' approximation. An exact formal expression of the stream function is obtained by using the bipolar cylinder coordinates and Fourier series expansion. From the stream function obtained, the streamline patterns are shown and the pressure distribution in the flow field is determined. By integrating the stress distributions on the cylinder, the farce and the moment exerted on the cylinder are calculated. The flow rate through the gap between the cylinder and the plate is also determined as a function of the distance between the cylinder and the plate. Special attention is directed to the case of very small distance between the cylinder and the plate concerned with the lubrication theory and the minimum pressure is calculated to explain a possible cavitation.
Since the characteristics of combustion and pollutant in Diesel engines were mainly affected by the characteristics of in-cylinder gas flow and fuel spray, an understanding of those was essential to the design of the D.I. Diesel engines. The improvement of volumetric efficiency of air charging into combustion chamber is a primary requirement to obtain better mean effective pressure of an engine. Since the air resistances in intake and exhaust flow passages, valve lift and valve shape influence greatly to the volumetric efficiency, it is very important to investigate the flow characteristics of intake and exhaust port which develops air motion in the combustion chamber. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of steady flow through the various kinds of commercial cylinder head ports, and the development procedures of HHI's H21/32 prototype cylinder head ports.

The flow field inside a cylinder of four-valve Sl engine was investigated quantitatively using a three-dimensional Laser Doppler Velocimetry system, to determine how stroke changes affect the flow field. The purpose of this work was to develop quantitative methods which correlate in-cylinder flows to engine performance. For this study, the sane intake manifold, engine head, cylinder, and the piston were used to examine the flow characteristics in different strokes. Quantification of the flow field was done by calculating three major parameters which are believed to adequately characterize in cylinder motion. These quantities were TKE, tumble and swirl ratios. The LDV results reveal that flow patterns are similar, the flow velocities scale with piston speed but another parameters such as TKE, and tumble and swirl numbers are not the same for different stroke systems.

One of the important operating factors for the air-fuel pre-mixed conditions in an HCCI engine is an in-cylinder flow. In this study, unsteady in-cylinder air flow characteristics in a diesel engine as a reference engine of an HCCI engine development were numerically analysed. Unsteady flow analyses were conducted with the combination of 3 intake port inlets, then the in-cylinder air flow distribution and swirl ratio results from a case were compared with the results from the other cases.

Three-dimensional, time-dependent solutions of fluid flow past a circular cylinder with a periodic array of circular fins are obtained using an accurate and efficient spectral multidomain methodology. A Fourier expansion with a corresponding uniform grid is used along the circumferential direction. A spectral multidomain method with Chebyshev collocation is used along the r-z plane to handle the periodic array of circular fins attached to the surface of the cylinder. Unlike the flow past a circular cylinder, Second instabilities like mode A and mode B are not found in the Reynolds number range $100\~500$. It is found that three-dimensional instability of vortical structures is suppressed due to the presence of fin. The present numerical solutions report the detailed information of flow quantities near wake of finned cylinder.
Numerical investigation has been carried out for laminar flow past an inclined square cylinder in cross freestream. In particular, inclination of a square cylinder with respect to the main flow direction can cause sudden shift of the separation points to other edges, resulting in drastic change of flow-induced forces on the cylinder such as Strouhal number (St) of vortex shedding, drag and lift forces on the cylinder, depending upon the inclination angle. Collecting all the numerical results obtained, we propose contour diagrams of drag/lift coefficients and Strouhal number on an Re-Angle plane. This study would be the first step towards understanding flow-induced forces on cylindrical structures under a strong gust of wind from the viewpoint of wind hazards.

A numerical study has been carried out to investigate heat transfer enhancement in channel flow using large-scale vortices. A square cylinder, inclined with respect to the main flow direction, is located at the center of the channel flow, generating a separation region and Karman vortices. Two cases are considered; one with a fixed blockage ratio and the other one with a fixed cylinder size. In both cases, the flow characteristics downstream of the cylinder significantly change depending on the inclination angle. As a result, heat transfer from channel wall is significantly enhanced due to increased vertical-velocity fluctuations induced by the large-scale vortices shed from the cylinder. Quantitative results as well as qualitative physical explanation are presented to justify the effectiveness of the inclined square cylinder as a vortex generator to enhance heat transfer from channel wall.
Numerical flow computations around an aeroelastic 3D square cylinder immersed in the turbulent boundary layer are shown. Present computational code can be characterized by three numerical aspects which are 1) the method of artificial compressibility is adopted for the incompressible flow computations, 2) the domain decomposition technique is used to get better grid point distributions, and 3) to achieve the conservation law both in time and space when the flow is computed a with moving and transformed grid, the time derivatives of metrics are evaluated using the time-and-space volume. To provide time-dependant inflow boundary conditions satisfying prescribed time-averaged velocity profiles, a convenient way for generating inflow turbulence is proposed. The square cylinder is modeled as a 4-lumped-mass system and it vibrates with two-degree of freedom of heaving motion. Those blocks which surround the cylinder are deformed according to the cylinder's motion. Vigorous oscillations occur as the vortex shedding frequency approaches cylinder's natural frequencies.
