  • On account of the development of the high speed internal combustion engines, several methods for increasing burning velocity has been investigated lately. Installation of a squash area on a cylinder head is one of the simple and practical method to induce the strong tubulant flow of air-fuel mixtureinto a combustion chamber. In this study, a four-stroke engine used for agricultural purpose was tested as an experimental model. A mathematical model of the squash velocity was derived, and also, several characteristics of the squash phenomena during the motoring of the engine used as a modelwere investigated. The results obtained were as follows: (1) Mathematical model of squash velocity was established and cheked (2) Squaash velocity and engine speed were found to be proportional to the squash area while they were inversely proportional to the squash width. (3) Squash velocity and crank angle at which the squash velocity become its peak were influenced by the magnitude of squash clearance: increase of squash clearance made squash velocity reduced acd made the peak of the squash velocity for from the top dead center and (4) When the squash area is divided in small areas baving unit width along the squash section, squash velocity at each unit width was proportional to the magnitude of the squash distance covered by the unit width.

  • In this study, performance and emissions characteristics of an liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) engine converted from a diesel engine were examined by using mixer system and liquid propane injection (LPi) system fuel supply methods. A compression ratio for the base diesel engine, 21, was modified into 8, 8.5, 9 and 9.5. The cylinder head and the piston crown were modified to roe the LPG in the engine. Ignition timing was controlled to be at minimum spark advance for best torque (MBT) each case. Engine performance and emissions characteristics are analyzed by investigating engine power, brake mean effective pressure (BMEP), brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), volumetric efficiency, CO, THC and NOx. Experimental results showed that the LPi system generates higher power and lower emissions than the conventional mixer fuel supply method.

  • A split-die design for the cold forging of symmetric parts such as those having a hexagonal cross-section is presented in this paper. Parts with a hexagonal cross-section, such as bolt heads and nuts, should be forged with a die that has a hexagonal-shaped hole. A split type die is required to mitigate the buildup of stress concentrations located at the corners of the hexagonal hole. Generally, the insert of a hexagonal die is made by cutting each corner of a cylinder using a hexagonal hole and then combined with the die and shrink-fitted. However, split dies face problems when extruding material at the corners of the hexagonal split die. To address this problem, two types of split dies were evaluated: rounded hexagonal dies and angular hexagonal dies. The effects of the pre-stress ring on the dies were compared and analyzed and results show that using the angular split hexagonal die can extend the lifetime of forging dies.

  • This paper deals with the noise evaluation and noise reduction of a reciprocating air-compressor. The reciprocating air-compressor is widely used in the small and medium sized industrial firms, many employees exposed and irritated by their noise in the workplace. Thus, appropriate noise control actions should be taken to prevent hearing loss due to the its noise exposure. Lead-wrapping techniques are employed to identify the contribution of principal noise sources which are generally known to be motor, belts, suction valves, discharge valves, moving parts, and flow-induced noise caused by edges or discontinuities along the flow path including expansions, contractions, junctions and bends. As a result, the main noise sources of the air-compressor are categorized by the suction and discharge noise, valve noise, and compressed air tank noise. Based on the investigations, mufflers are designed to reduce both the suction and discharge noise and the compressed-air tank noise. Instead of the conventional valve plate, polyethylene resin is used the reduction of valve impact noise. In addition, attempts are made to reduce the valve noise propagation to the cylinder head and the compressor tank by using the insulation casings. As a result of the countermeasure plans, a noise reduction up to 10dB(A) could be achieved for the air-compressor.

  • Magnesium thin films for marine engine parts such as the engine block and the cylinder head cover etc. were prepared on the magnesium alloy(AZ91D) substrate by Thermo-electron activated Ion-plating method. The influence of gas pressure and substrate bias voltages on the crystal orientation and morphology of the films was investigated with X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM), respectively. Moreover, the effect of crystal orientation and morphology of the magnesium films on the its hardness property was investigated as well. From the results, the hardness of the films was increased in Ar gas pressure due to the grain boundary strengthening and occlusion effects.

  • The spinning machine has been developed for a bus and truck wheel disc which is manufactured by spinning process method. This machine has the mechanical structure with bed, 2-column, cross head, 2-vertical slide, 2-horizontal slide with forming roller, clamp slide and main spindle similar to large size vertical lathe. Main spindle attached the mandrel is rotated about 500rpm drived by 280kW power DC motor, and a rotating black material pressed on the mandrel with the clamp slide is spinformed by 2-forming rollers which are attached inner end of the 2-horizontal slides. The 2-vertical and 2-horizontal slides are actuated by the hydraulic cylinder which is controlled by the servo valve individially, and these servo valves are controlled by control signal of the CNC controller which is computed with position signal feedbacked from the encoder sensor. The developed machine can manufacture wheel disc of various section profile without mandrel change because section profile is easily modified using program editing in the CNC controller processor. The wheel disc manufactured by spinning process method has many advantages that the endurance is increased by 2 times and the weight is decreased by 30% compared with a conventional disc.

  • Parametric studies based on analysis of lubrication system of a four cylinder gasoline engine are illustrated system in this paper. In development process of engine lubrication system, parts of failure cases are related with oil pull over and oil churning phenomenon. The crankcase & head system pressure by oil churning phenomenon are gradual increased. It cause oil pull over phenomenon at engine breather line and oil over-consumption. In order to improve oil reduction and oil pull over phenomenon are also considered in the developing state. For this study, the characteristics of engine lubrication system are measured at various tilting angle and drain hole sizes. In addition, the oil flow & oil quantity are tested by blow by meter and catch jar. Results are presented to stabilize the oil supply system at sever driving condition. The data from present study are available for the engine lubrication system.

  • The effects of core materials on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al casting products have been investigated. The Al casting samples and cylinder head were fabricated by using organic and inorganic binder core respectively, and their microstructure and mechanical properties were evaluated. The Al casting samples fabricated by using inorganic core showed the better mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation than those of the Al casting samples fabricated by using organic core. That's because the Al casting samples contained small amount of pore defects and had fine microstructure compared with the Al casting samples fabricated by using organic core. Also, the use of inorganic core effectively reduced harmful gas emission and pollution.

  • In conventional closed-loop crankcase ventilation systems, the lubrication oil had to be re-circulated to the intake manifold, in the form of oil mist mixed with the blow-by gas. This blow-by gas containing the engine lubricant oil affects on the engine problems and the exhaust emissions. A high-efficient oil separator is required to minimize consumption of engine oil and reduce harmful emissions. In the conventional oil separator of CI engines, it has good oil separation performance even though separator design is simple, due to lots of the blow-by gas. As the emission regulation becomes severe, the oil separator for SI engines is also required. But in SI engines, separator design should be optimized, due to small size of oil particles and little amount of blow-by gas. In this study, oil separation performance classified by diameter of oil mist in cylinder head cover internal model which has three cyclones and two baffle plates for SI engine is calculated with CFD methodology.

  • In this research, numerical analysis was carried out on novel and existing fins, adjusted in terms of factors such as length, spacing, and angle, of a high-temperature heat exchanger for a 1 kW class Stirling engine, designed as a prime mover for a domestic cogeneration system. The performance improvement as a result of shape optimization was confirmed with numerical analysis by including the air preheater, which was not considered during optimization. However, a negative heat flux was observed in the cylinder head portion. This phenomenon was clarified by analyzing the exhaust gas and wall surface temperature of the combustion chamber. Furthermore, assuming an ideal cycle, the effects of heat transfer enhancement on the thermodynamic cycle and system performance were predicted.
