Notodelphyid copepods taken from Ascidians, Ascidia samea (Oka) and Ascidia sp. which had been collected in the East sea and the Korea Strait are reported. These copepods are Lonchidiopsis hartmeyeri Vanh ffen, 1917 and Pachypygus curvatus Ooishi 1961, and are redescribed as new records to the Korea fauna.
The feeding habits of larval Ammodytes japonicus were examined. A total of 208 individuals were collected by RN80 Net from January to February, 2019 in the coastal waters of Gujora and Mangchi, Geoje, Korea. Range of notochord length of larval A. japonicus was 1.46~8.00 mm and fed mainly on copepods that constituted 99.9% in %IRI. The results of analysis in ontogenetic changes, divided with 3 classes (≤2 mm, 3~4 mm, ≥5 mm, Notochord length), was all classes mainly fed copepods. An opposite relationship was found between the calanoida and cyclopoida. When percentage of calanoida of copepods increased, cyclopoida of copepods decreased.
As one of the serial faunistic studies on the brackish cyclopoids from Korea, taxonomic accounts of three species of Halicyclops from various brackish waters in South Korea are provided, with detailed illustrations of them: H. uncus Ueda and Nagai, 2009, H. setiformis Ueda and Nagai, 2012, and H. itohi Ueda and Nagai, 2012. Halicyclops uncus is newly recorded from Korea, and the latter two species are corrected from H. sinensis sensu Chang, 2009 and H. cf. rotundipes sensu Chang, 2009, respectively. As a result, a total of seven species of the genus are now recognized in Korea, and a revised key to the species is presented.
Six new species of the genus Enalcyonium are described as parasites of octocorals of New Caledonia. They are Enalcyonium lobophyti, E. humesi, E. caledonensis, and E. auriculatum from the alcyonacean Lobophyton schoedei Moser, E. capillatum from the gorgonacean Rumphella antipathes (L.), and E. bullatum from the gorgonacean Siphonogorgia variabilis (Hickson). This is the first record on the species of Enalcyonium from the South Pacific.
Three new species of Hemicyclops, H. parilis, H. nasutus and H. membranatus are described from Korean coasts. Hemicyclops parilis n. sp. is closely similar to H. gomsoensis Ho and Kim, but distinguishable from the latter species by having the different shape of genital double somite and spermatophore. Hemicyclops nasutus n. sp. is distinguishable from congeners by having five setae on the first segment of antennule and the ratio 4.26 : 1 of the length to width of caudal ramus. Hemicyclops membranatus n. sp. is characterized by the possession of the membranous fringe along margins of cephalothorax and a claw on the third antennal segment.
We estimated the influence of environmental factors on zooplankton communities at 25 reservoirs during winter (December 2010 to January 2011). Among zooplankton groups, Cyclops vicinus is more dominant during winter, and this is positively related to withered vegetation area and dissolved oxygen level. Therefore, the presence of withered vegetation might be considered as an important factor to determine C. vicinus distribution during winter. We considered that withered vegetation might be utilized as a habitat for C. vicinus, as well as provide an attachment substrate for periphytic algae. Abundance of periphytic algae can lead to high concentration of dissolved oxygen. Although copepods prefer high water temperatures for increasing their population growth, if Cyclops can overcome low temperature stress that leads to disruption of population, their population growth initiation in the next growing season (i.e. next spring) is possibly propelled by the winter population.
As a result of the faunistic study on the subterranean cyclopoid copepods, four species of three genera in the family Cyclopidae are reported from nine limestone caves and a lava tube in South Korea: Megacyclops magnus (Marsh, 1920), Acanthocyclops orientalis Borutzky, 1966, A, robustus (Sars, 1863) and Diacyclops suoensis Ito, 1956, all of them new to Korean fauna. This paper deals with the taxonomic accounts and illustrations of the four species with the redescription of A. orientalis. This is the first taxonomic study on the cave-dwelling cyclopoid copepods from Korea.
A small cyclopoid copepod M. subtilis (Giesbrecht, 1893 ["1892"]) belonging to the genus Monothula $B{\ddot{o}}ttger-Schnack$ and Huys, 2001 was collected by using $60{\mu}m$ mesh net and firstly recorded in the epipelagic layer of the equatorial Pacific Ocean. We redescribed its morphological characteristics for both female and male, comparing with those of previous studies. Specimens of M. subtilis from the equatorial Pacific Ocean differ from those previously reported by others in terms of the length of the seta G on antenna, being much shorter than setae E and F; in the distal spine on the swimming leg 4, being longer than the length of the third segment on P4. The outer spine of the P3 enp-3 in male is slightly over the tip of conical process. The spine lengths of the distal endopods of P2-P4 for both sexes showed variations among individuals, and the proportions of spine lengths in female are higher than those in male.
A new species belonging to the genus Cyclopinoides Lindberg, 1953 (Cyclopinidae) is described from three beaches in Korea and Japan, as the first record of the genus from the Pacific. Among five species currently recognized in the genus, the new species resembles C. schulzi Herbst, 1964 from the Red Sea in sharing the character combination of 20-segmented antennule and stumpy caudal rami. However, C. orientalis n. sp. differs from it by relatively longer caudal rami (2.5-2.8 times as long as wide in female and about 1.6-1.8 times in male, while less than 2 times in female and about 1.3 times in male of C. schulzi), and by the transformation of an outer distal spine to a slender seta on the distal exopodal segment of leg 4. Moreover, C. orientalis n. sp. is discernible from C. schulzi in having a pyriform copulatory tube (against elongated tubular style in C. schulzi). A key to the species hitherto known in the genus is provided.
Two species of notodelophyid copepods, Doroixys uncinata Kerschner, 1879 and Dorophygus rigidus Ooishi, 1962 are redescribed on the basis of the specimens taken from the ascidians deposited at the Department of Biological Science, Ewha Womans University. The former species were taken from the test of the commpound ascidian Aplidium glabrum(Verrill), and the latter from the body cavity of the solitary ascidians Cnemidocarpa irene(Hartmeyer) and Stylea tokiokai Nishikawa.
