Refractive Index Characteristics of Optical Fiber (광섬유의 굴절을 특성)

  • The optical fiber refractive index sensors were fabricated using etching method and their refractive index characteristics have been investigated. Good sensitivity was shown at the region of 1.452-1.46 refractive index and operating point was shifted by wavelength. The sensitivity of sensor increased with decreasing cladding thickness and was stable with heat treatment. The hysteresis under cyclic refractive index changes was negligible.

  • The movement of teeth during orthodontic treatment requires bone remodeling process in periodontal tissue. To find out the changes occuring in the cell itself, mechanical force was applied to the cultured periodontal ligament cells. Following results were obtained from measuring the changes in cyclic AMP and $PGE_2$, $^3H$-thymidine incorporation amount in time lapse after application of mechanical force. 1. When mechanical force was applied to cultured PDL cells, the amount of cAMP in cells were increased significantly after 15 min. of force application, but were decreased gradually as time lapsed. 2. When mechanical force was applied to cultured PDL cells, the amount of PGE2 were increased at 20,40,60 min. and was significantly increased at 20 min. 3. When mechanical force was applied to cultured PDL cells, the amount of $^3H$-thymidine incorporation was some increased, but was not statistically significant.

  • Selective, highly stable determination of serotonin was achieved in cyclic voltammetric measurement carried out at electrochemically treated conductive boron-doped diamond electrode. Boron-doped diamond electrodes were prepared on single crystal Si wafers by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition and $B_2O_3$ was dissolved in acetone/methanol(9:1) mixture solution so that the B/C weight ratio ca. $10^4ppm$. Serotonin is a kind of indoleamines, which secreted from adrenal marrow cells. The serious problem to detection of serotonin is the interference phenomena of electroactive constituent, including AA. In this study, electrochemical treatment of HDD was carried out to discriminate between serotonin and AA responses. Experimental results showed that the peak potential of AA oxidation shift to the positive direction and the oxidation peak of serotonin was unchanged.

Adsorption of Macrocyclic Cobalt Complex on a Glassy Carbon Electrode for the Electrocatalytic Reduction of $O_2$

  • It was found that the adsorption of a cobalt(III) complex with a macrocyclic ligand, C-meso-5,7,7,12,14,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (hmc), was induced on a glassy carbon electrode by heavily oxidizing the electrode surface. Adsorption properties are discussed. The glassy carbon electrode with the adsorbed complex was employed to see the catalytic activities for the electro-reduction of O2. In the presence of oxygen, reduction of (hmc)Co3+ showed two cathodic waves in cyclic voltammetry. Compared to the edge plane graphite electrode at which two cathodic waves were also observed in a previous study, catalytic reduction of O2 occurred in the potential region of the first wave while it happened in the second wave region with the other electrode. A rotating disk electrode after the same treatment was employed to study the mechanism of the O2 reduction and two-electron reduction of O2 was observed. The difference from the previous results was explained by the different reactivity of the (hmc)CoOOH2+ intermediate, which is produced after the two electron reduction of (hmc)Co3+ in the presence of O2.

  • A new methodology for construction of dihydro-1,4-dioxin skeleton was described. Introduction of thio group at the ${\alpha}-position$ of 8 followed by chlorination gave 11, which was to prevent an enolization as well as to promote the facile nucleophilic substitution reaction of ethylene glycol giving 16 in equilibrium with cyclic ether 19. Removal of thio group of 19 and dehydration in the presence of an acid catalyst gave dihydro-1,4-dioxin 21. In case of electron withdrawing trifluoromethyl group is subsituted in C-2, 18 was converted to the corresponding dihydro-1,4-dioxin 20 by the halogenation of hydroxy followed by treatment of triethylamine.

  • Aster species has been used in traditional chinese medicine for treatment of a bruies and asthma. On reviewing the literatures of this species, monoterpene glycosides, diterpenoids, triterpene glycosides, cyclic pentapeptides, oligopeptides and flavonoids 1) were isolated and some pharmacological activites were investigated 2). In continuation of our search for bioative components from Korean medicinal plants, we have examined Aster spathulifolius, collected from Jeju island on August 2001. (omitted)

A study of the cause of metal failure in treatment of femur shaft fracture - Fractographical and clinical analysis of metal failure- (대퇴골 간부 골절시 사용한 금속물의 금속부전(Metal failure)의 기전에 대한 연구)

  • The author fractographically analyized the cause of metal failure(the first time this procedure has been used for this metal failure)and also analyized it clinically. In this study, I selected eight cases which have been analyized fractographically. In all these cases, the analysis was done after treatment of metal failure of implants internally fixed to femur shaft fractures at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Yeung-Nam University Hospital during the six year period from May 1983 to September 1989. 1. Metal failure occured in five dynamic-compression plates, one Jewett nail, one screw in Rowe plate, and one interlocking nail. 2. The clinical cause of metal failure was deficiency of medial butress in five cases, incorrect position of implant in one case, and incorrect selection of implant in two cases. 3. The time interval between internal fixation and metal failure was four months in one case, between five months to twelve months in six cases, three years in one case. 4. The fractographically analytical cause of metal failure was ; first, impact failure, one case, second, fatigue failure, six cases, machining mark(stress liser), four cases type : low consistent cyclic fatigue failure irregular cyclic fatigue failure third, stress corrosion crack, one case. 5. 316L Stainless Steel has good resistance to corrosion. However, when its peculiar surface film is destroyed by fretting, it shows pitting corrosion. This is, perhaps, the main cause of metal failure. 6. It is possible that mechanical injury occured in implants during the manufacturing of implants or that making a screw hole is the main cause of metal failure.

Effect of the Heat Treatment on the Mechanical Property and Corrosion Resistance of CU - 7Al - 2.5Si Alloy (Cu-7Al-2.5Si 합금의 기계적 및 내식특성에 미치는 열처리 효과)

  • Recently, the fuel oil of diesel engines of marine ships has been increasingly changed to heavy oil of low quality as the oil price is getting higher and higher. Therefore, the spiral gear attached at the motor of the oil purifier which plays an important role to purify the heavy oil is also easy to expose at severe environmental condition due to the purification of the heavy oil in higher temperature. Thus, the material of the spiral gear requires a better mechanical strength, wear and corrosion resistance. In this study, the heat treatment(tempering) with various holding time at temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ was carried out to the alloy of Cu-7Al-2.5Si as centrifugal casting, and the properties of both hardness and corrosion resistance with and without heat treatment were investigated with observation of the microstructure and with electrochemical methods, such as measurement of corrosion potential, cathodic and anodic polarization curves, cyclic voltammogram, and a.c. impedance. in natural seawater solution. The ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}^{\prime}$ and ${\gamma}_2$ phases were observed in the material in spite of no heat treatment due to quenching effect of a spin mold. However, their phases, that is, ${\beta}^{\prime}$ and ${\gamma}_2$ phases decreased gradually with increasing the holding time at a constant temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. The hardness more or less decreased with heat treatment, however its corrosion resistance was improved with the heat treatment. Furthermore, the longer holding time, the better corrosion resistance. In addition, when the holding time was 48hrs, its corrosion current density showed the lowest value. The pattern of corroded surface was nearly similar to that of the pitting corrosion, and this morphology was greatly observed in the case of no heat treatment. It is considered that ${\gamma}_2$ phase at the grain boundary was corroded preferentially as an anode. However, the pattern of general corrosion exhibited increasingly due to decreasing the ${\gamma}_2$ phase with heat treatment. Consequently, it is suggested that the corrosion resistance of Cu-7Al-2.5Si alloy can be improved with the heat treatment as a holding time for 48 hrs at $500^{\circ}C$.

Regulatory Action of $\beta-adrenergic$ Agonist and 8-bromocyclic AMP on Calcium Currents in the Unfertilized Mouse Eggs

  • There are many report suggesting that influx and intracellular calcium concentration $([Ca^{2+}]_i)$ are related to cell signalling in various cells. However, it has not been reported that calcium channel activation is affected by the substances involved in signal transduction pathways in the mouse eggs. In this study, the effects of isoprenaline (ISP) and cyclic AMP on calcium influx through calcium channels were investigated to show their relationship with the signal transduction process in unfertilized mouse eggs. Using whole cell voltage clamp techniques, calcium currents, elicited by the depolarizing pulses of 300 ms duration (from -50 mV to 50 mV in 10 mV increments) from a holding potential of -80 mV, were recorded. The current-voltage (I-V) relation of calcium currents was shown to be bell-shaped; the current began to activate at -50 mV and reached its maximum $(-1.33{\pm}0.16\;nA:\;mean{\pm}S.E.,\;n=7)$ at -10 mV, then decayed at around 50 mV. Calcium currents were fully activated within $7\;ms{\sim}20\;ms$ and completely inactivated 200 ms after onset of the step pulse. ISP within the concentration ranges of $10^{-8}\;M{\sim}10^{-4}\;M$ dose-dependently increased the amplitude calcium current. The permeable cyclic AMP analogue,8-bromocyclic AMP, also increased its maximal amplitude by 46ft at $10^{-5}\;M$, while protein kinase inhibitor (PKI), which is known to inhibit 0.02 phosphorylating units of cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) per microgram decreased calcium currents. Currents recorded in the presence of PKI were resistant to increase by the application of $10^{-5}\;M$. Also, PKI inhibited the calcium current increase elicited by ISP treatment. These results suggest that $\beta-adrenergic$ regulation of the calcium channel is mediated by the cAMP-dependent protein kinase. This signal transduction pathway might play a role in regulating $[Ca^{2+}]_i$, level due to the increase of calcium influx in mouse eggs.

  • A number of sedative alkaloids were isolated from Sanjoin(酸棗仁), the seeds of Zizyphus vulgaris Lamark var. spinosus Bunge (Rhamnaceae) which is an important Chinese medicinal material used to treat insomnia and sometimes to treat sleepiness. Those compounds were designated as Sanjoinine-A, B, C, D, etc. depending on the order of increasing polarity. Sanjoinine-A, $C_{31}H_{42}N_4O_4$, $mp\;249^{\circ}$, $[{\alpha}]^{27}_D-316$, Sanjoinine-B, $C_{30}H_{40}N_4O_4$, $mp\;212{\sim}4^{\circ}$, Sanjoinene, $C_{29}H_{35}N_3O_4$, $mp\;281{\sim}2^{\circ}$, $[{\alpha}]^{22}_D-272$, Sanjoinine-D, $C_{32}H_{46}N_4O_5$, $mp\;256{\sim}8^{\circ}$, $[{\alpha}]^{22}_D-53.6$, Sanjoinine-F, $C_{31}H_{42}N_4O_5$, $mp\;228{\sim}9^{\circ}$, $[{\alpha}]^{22}_D-215$, and $Sanjoinine-G_1,\;C_{31}H_{44}N_4O_5,\;mp\;236{\sim}8^{\circ},\;[{\alpha}]^{22}_D-68.6$, were found as 14-membered cyclic peptide alkaloids, $Sanjoinine-G_2,\;C_{30}H_{42}N_4O_4,\;mp\;182^{\circ},\;[{\alpha}]^{22}_D-79.2$, as being open chain peptide alkaloid, and Sanjoinine-E, $C_{19}H_{21}NO_2$, $mp\;166^{\circ}$, $[{\alpha}]^{20}_D-146.2$, N-Methylasimilobine, $C_{18}H_{19}NO_2$, $mp\;193{\sim}5^{\circ}$, $[{\alpha}]^{20}_D-204$, Sanjoinine-Ia, $C_{18}H_{19}NO_2$, $mp\;155{\sim}7^{\circ}$, $[{\alpha}]^{20}_D-140$, Sanjoinine-Ib, $C_{19}H_{21}NO_4$, $mp\;184^{\circ}$, Sanjoinine-K, $C_{16}H_{19}NO_3$, $mp\;159{\sim}61^{\circ}$, $[{\alpha}]^{20}_D+35$, Caaverine, $C_{17}H_{17}NO_2$, $mp\;204^{\circ}$, $[{\alpha}]^{20}_D-80$, and Zizyphusine, $C_{20}H_{24}NO_4$, $mp\;214{\sim}6^{\circ}$, $[{\alpha}]^{20}_D+317$ as being aporphine alkaloids. The heat treatment of the cyclic peptide alkaloids produced their isomeric products which showed enhanced sedative activity. The chemical structure of the isomeric products will be discussed.
