Due to the permanent damage to structures during earthquakes, soil liquefaction is an important issue in geotechnical earthquake engineering that needs to be investigated. Typical examples of soil liquefaction have been observed in many earthquakes, particularly in Alaska, Niigata (1964), San Fernando (1971), Loma Prieta (1989), Kobe (1995) and Izmit (1999) earthquakes. In this study, liquefaction behavior of uniform sands of different grain sizes was investigated by using the energy-based method. For this purpose, a total of 36 deformation-controlled tests were conducted on water-saturated samples in undrained conditions by using the cyclic simple shear test method and considering the relative density, effective stress and mean grain size parameters that affect the cumulative liquefaction energy. The results showed that as the mean grain size decreases, the liquefaction potential of the sand increases. In addition, with increasing effective stress and relative density, the resistance of sand against liquefaction decreases. Multiple regression analysis was performed on the test results and separate correlations were proposed for the samples with mean grain size of 0.11-0.26 mm and for the ones with 0.45-0.85 mm. The recommended relationships were compared to the ones existing in the literature and compatible results were obtained.
Fatigue tests were conducted on SM45C steel using hour-glass shaped smooth tubular specimen under biaxial loading in order to investigate the crack formation and growth at room temperature. Three types of loading systems, were employed fully-reserved cyclic torsion without a superimposed static tension or compression fully-reserved cyclic torsion with a superimposed static tension and fully-reserved cyclic torsion with a superimposed static compression. The test results showed that a superimposed static tensile mean stress reduced fatigue life however a superimposed static compressive mean stress increased fatigue life. Experimental results indicated that cracks were initiated on planes of maximum shear strain whether or not the mean stresses were superimposed. A biaxial mean stress had an effect on the direction that the cracks nucleated and propagated at stage 1 (mode II).

Various soil behaviors usually occurring in the geotechnical problems, such as, cutting and embankments, stability of slope, seepage, consolidations, shearing failures and liquefaction, should be predicted and analyzed in any way. An approach of these predictions may be followed by the development of the constitutive equations as first and subsequently solved by numerical methods. The purpose of this paper is develop the constitutive equation of sands uder monotonic or cyclic loadings. The constitutive equation which is based on elasto-plastic theory, modified anisotropic consolidated stress parameter by Sekiguchi et al and Pender's theory is derived. And the equation is included a new stress parameter, hardening function, Bauschinger's effects and Pender's theory. The model is later evaluated and confirmed the validity by the test data of Ottawa sand, Banwol sand Hongseong sand. The following conclustions may be drawn: 1. The consititutive equation which is based on elasto-plastic theory, modified anisotropic consolidated stress parpameter by Sekiguchi et al and Pender's theory is derived. The equation in included a new stress parameter, hardening function, Bauschinger's effect and Pender's theory. 2. For Ottawa sand, the result of the constitutive equation shows a better agreement than that of Oka et al. The result of axial strain agrees well with the tested data. However, the result of horizontal strain is little bit off for the cyclic loadings or large stress. It is thought that the deviation may be improved by considering Poisson's ratio and precise measurement of shear modulus. 3. Banwol sand is used for the strain and stress tests with different relative densitites and confining pressures. The predeicted result shows a good agreement with the tested data because the required material parameters were directly measurd and determined form this laboratory. 4. For Hongseong sand, the tests under same amplitude of cyclic deviatoric stress shows a similar result with the tested data in absolute strain. It shows the acute shape of turning point because the sine wave of input is used in the test but the serrated wave in prediction.

Reinforced and prestressed concrete (RC and PC) thin walls are crucial to the safety and serviceability of structures subjected to shear. The shear strengths of elements in walls depend strongly on the softening of concrete struts in the principal compression direction due to the principal tension in the perpendicular direction. The past three decades have seen a rapid development of knowledge in shear of reinforced concrete structures. Various rational models have been proposed that are based on the smeared-crack concept and can satisfy Navier's three principles of mechanics of materials (i.e., stress equilibrium, strain compatibility and constitutive laws). The Cyclic Softened Membrane Model (CSMM) is one such rational model developed at the University of Houston, which is being efficiently used to predict the behavior of RC/PC structures critical in shear. CSMM for RC has already been implemented into finite element framework of OpenSees (Fenves 2005) to come up with a finite element program called Simulation of Reinforced Concrete Structures (SRCS) (Zhong 2005, Mo et al. 2008). CSMM for PC is being currently implemented into SRCS to make the program applicable to reinforced as well as prestressed concrete. The generalized program is called Simulation of Concrete Structures (SCS). In this paper, the CSMM for RC/PC in material scale is first introduced. Basically, the constitutive relationships of the materials, including uniaxial constitutive relationship of concrete, uniaxial constitutive relationships of reinforcements embedded in concrete and constitutive relationship of concrete in shear, are determined by testing RC/PC full-scale panels in a Universal Panel Tester available at the University of Houston. The formulation in element scale is then derived, including equilibrium and compatibility equations, relationship between biaxial strains and uniaxial strains, material stiffness matrix and RC plane stress element. Finally the formulated results with RC/PC plane stress elements are implemented in structure scale into a finite element program based on the framework of OpenSees to predict the structural behavior of RC/PC thin-walled structures subjected to earthquake-type loading. The accuracy of the multiscale modeling technique is validated by comparing the simulated responses of RC shear walls subjected to reversed cyclic loading and shake table excitations with test data. The response of a post tensioned precast column under reversed cyclic loads has also been simulated to check the accuracy of SCS which is currently under development. This multiscale modeling technique greatly improves the simulation capability of RC thin-walled structures available to researchers and engineers.
Deformational characteristics of soils, often expressed in terms of shear modulus and material damping ratios, are important parameters in the design of soil-structure systems subjected to cyclic and dynamic loadings. In this paper, deformational characteristics of dry sand at small to intermediate strains were investigated using resonant column/torsional shear(RC 175) apparatus. Both resonant column(dynamic) and torsional shear (cyclic) tests were performed in a sequential series on the same specimen. With the modification of motion monitoring system, the elastic zone, where the stress strain relationship is independent of loading cycles and strain amplitude, was veri tied and hysteretic damping was found even in this zone. At strains above cyclic threshold, shear modulus increases and damping ratio decreases with increasing number of loading cycles. Moduli and damping ratios of dry sand are independent of loading frequency and values obtained from pseudostatic torsional shear tests are Identical with the values from the dynamic resonant column test, provided the effect of number of loading cycles is considered in the conlparison. Therefore, deformational characteristics determined by RC/TS tests may be applied in both dynamic and static analyses of soil-structure systems.
It is well known all much information for evaluation on possibility of liquefaction and lateral flow for sand over the world. Recently, it is started to be known that liquefaction happens on non-plastic silt, too. But cyclic and post-cyclic characteristics for non-plastic silt is a few familiar to the world. Specially, it is not aware of the estimating method for lateral flow on non-plastic silt. The main purpose in this paper is to propose the evaluation for liquefaction and lateral flow on non-plastic silt. The method used in this research is that possibility for liquefaction on non-plastic silt was evaluated with cyclic direct simple shear test, and then residental strength was estimated with static shear test. Through the test results liquefaction on non-plastic silt is well not happened but strength decreases rapidly with increasing shear stress. With the proposed method it can be evaluated possibility of liquefaction and propose lateral flow.

It was known that the aging effect of sands is insignificant in comparison with clays, and hence the study on this effect had seldom been performed prior to the early 1980s. However, field tests for this effect have been actively carried out since it was investigated that penetration resistance of reformed sands increased with the lapse of time. Recently, the aging effect of sands has also been examined in laboratory testings. In this study, undrained static triaxial tests were performed to evaluate the effect on the Nak-dong River sands, with different .elative densities $(D_r)$, consolidation stress ratios $(K_c)$, and consolidation times. As a result of the tests, it was proved that the undrained cyclic shear strength $(R_f)$ increased with the aged time on the sands. The in situ range of Rf on the sands, which is applicable to the magnitude of earthquake in the Nak-dong River area, was proposed by using the test results.
Suction affects the unsaturated soil as the negative pore pressure, and leads to increases of the yield stress and the plastic shear stiffness of the soil skeleton due to the growth in interparticle stress. Hence, in this study, in order to account for these effects of suction under the dynamic loading condition such as the earthquake, the element simulation of the cyclic triaxial test using induced stress-strain relation based on cyclic elasto-plastic constitutive model extended for unsaturated soil considering the $1^{st}$ and the $2^{nd}$ yield functions was conducted. Through the stress path, stress-strain relation and relation between volumetric strain and axial strain, it was seen in all the cases that the simulation results demonstrated a good agreement with the experimental results. It is expected that the results of this study possibly contribute to the accuracy improvement on the prediction of unsaturated soil behavior under the dynamic loading condition.
The roughness of rock joint is one of the most important parameters in developing the shear resistance and the tendency of dilation. Due to the damage accumulated with shearing displacement, the roughness angle is lowered continuously. It is known that dilation, shear strength hardening, and softening are directly related to the degradation of asperities. Much effort has been directed to incorporate the complicated damage mechanism of asperities into a constitutive model fur rock joints. This study presents an elasto-plastic formulation of joint behavior including elastic deformability, dilatancy and asperity surface damage. It is postulated that the plastic portion of incremental displacement 7an be decomposed into contributions from both sliding along the asperity surface and damage of asperity. Numerical cyclic shear tests are presented to illustrate th? performance of the derived incremental stress-displacement relation. A laboratory cyclic shear test is also simulated. Numerical examples reveal that the elasto-plastic joints model is promising.

The core aim of this dissertation is to empirically scrutinize a strength characteristic of beam-column frame subjected to the cyclic lateral load, a beam-column frame of un-reinforced masonry wall, and a shear wall frame. First and foremost, I embark upon making three prototypes vis-$\grave{a}$-vis this research. By conducting this process, I touch on an analysis of cyclic behavior and a damage characteristic of the beam-column frame, the beam-column frame of un-reinforced masonry wall, and the shear wall frame. What is more, through the previous procedure, the next part delves into the exact stress transfer path and the destructive mechanism to examine how much and how strong the beam-column frame of un-reinforced Masonry Wall does have a resistance capacity against earthquake in all the architecture constructed by the above-mentioned frame, as well as school buildings. In addition to the three prototypes, two more experimental models, a beam-column frame and shear wall frame, are used to compare with the beam-column frame of un-reinforced masonry wall. Lastly, the dissertation will suggest some solutions to improve the resistance capacity against earthquake regarding all constructions built with non bearing wall following having examining precisely all the analysis with regard to not only behavior properties and the damage mechanism of the beam-column frame and the beam-column frame of un-reinforced Masonry Wall but also the resistance capacity against earthquake of non bearing wall and school buildings.
