The response of a reinforced concrete element under cyclic shear is characterized by the hysteretic loops of the shear stress-strain curves. These hysteretic loops can exhibit strength deterioration, stiffness degradation, and a pinched shape. Recent tests have shown that the orientation of steel grids in RC shear elements has a strong effect on the "pinching effect" in the post-yield hysteretic loops. When the steel grid was set at a 45 degree angle to the shear plane, there was no pinching effect and no strength deterioration. However, when the steel grid was set parallel to the shear plane, there was a severe pinching effect and severe strength deterioration with increasing shear strain magnitude. In this paper, two RC elements subjected to revered cyclic shear stresses are considered to study the effect of the steel grid orientation. The presence and absence of the pinching mechanism in the post-yield shear hysteretic loops is studied using the Rotating Angle Softened Truss Model (RA-STM) theory.

Results are presented of the cyclic loading tests of there low-rise shear wall assembligies using high strength concrete. The possibilities of achieving an acceptable level of energy dissipation in one story shear walls, mainly by flexural yielding, are examined. Mechanisms of flexural and shear resistance are reviewed with emphasis on aspects of sliding shear. Detrimental effects of sliding shear are demonstrated together with improvement achieved by use of diagonal wall reinforcements. It is postulated that with suitably arranged diagonal wall reinforcements a predominantly flexural response mode with good energy dissipation characteristics can be achieved in low-rise shear walls.
The precision cyclic shear test system was established to investigate the mechanical characteristics of rough rock joints under cyclic loading conditions. Laboratory cyclic shear tests were conducted for saw-cut joints and artificial rough rock joints using Hwangdeung granite and Yeosan marble. Surface roughness and aperture characteristics of specimens were examined by measuring surface topography using the laser profilometer. Peak shear strength, phase difference during loading and unloading, and anisotropic shear behavior were investigated throughout the cyclic shear test results. These features and their subsequent variations in each loading cycle are significantly dependent upon the second order asperities and the strength of intact rock. It was observed that degradation of asperities for rough rock joints under cyclic shear loading followed the exponential degradation laws of asperity angle and that the mechanism for asperity degradation would be different depending upon the normal stress level, roughness of joint surface and the loading stage.
This paper presents a finite element (FE) model for predicting the nonlinear response and behavior of a reinforced concrete T-beam deficient in shear under cyclic loading. Cracking loads, failure loads, response hysteresis envelopes and crack patterns were used as bench mark for comparison between experimental and FE results. A parametric study was carried out to predict the optimum combination of the open and close crack shear transfer coefficients (${\beta}_t$ and ${\beta}_c$) of the constitutive material model for concrete. It is concluded that when both shear transfer coefficients are equal to 0.2 the FE results gave the best correlation with the experimental results. The results were also verified on a rectangular shear deficient beam (R-beam) tested under cyclic loading and it is concluded that the variation of section geometry has no effect on the optimum choice of the values of shear transfer coefficients of 0.2. In addition, a parametric study based on the variation of concrete compressive strength, was carried out on the T-beam and it is observed that the variation of concrete compressive strength has little effect on the deflection. Further conclusions and observations were also drawn.
In this analytical study numerous prior experimental studies on reinforced concrete beam-to-column connections subjected to cyclic loading are investigated and a database of geometric properties, material strengths, configuration details and test results of subassemblies is established. Considering previous experimental research and employing statistical correlation method, parameters affecting joint shear capacity are determined. Afterwards, an equation to predict the joint shear strength is formed based on the most influential parameters. The developed equation includes parameters that take into account the effect of eccentricity, column axial load, wide beams and transverse beams on the seismic behavior of the beam-to-column connections, besides the key parameters such as concrete compressive strength, reinforcement yield strength, effective joint width and joint transverse reinforcement ratio.
The primary objective of this study was to identify concrete contribution to the initial shear strength of reinforced concrete (RC) hollow columns under lateral loading. Seven large-scale RC rectangular hollow column specimens were tested under monotonic or cyclic lateral loads. The most important design parameter was column length-to-depth aspect ratio ranging between 1.5 and 3.0, and the other test variables included web area ratio, hollow section ratio, and loading history. The tests showed that the initial shear strength reduced in a linear pattern as the column aspect ratio increased, and one specimen tested under cyclic loading achieved approximately 83% of the shear strength of the companion specimen under monotonic loading. Also, several pioneering shear models proposed around the world, all of which were mainly based on tests for columns with solid sections, were reviewed and compared with the test results of this study, for their possible applications to columns with hollow sections. After all, an empirical equation was proposed for concrete contribution to the initial shear strength of RC hollow columns based on fundamental mechanics and the test results.
An experimental study has been conducted to evaluate the effects of average and cyclic shear stresses on the undrained failure behaviors of dense marine silty sand by using the Cyclic Direct Simple Shear apparatus. The results show that when the average shear stress ratio is zero, symmetric cyclic shear deformation is the major component of deformation, and permanent shear deformation is relatively small. On the other hand, when the average shear stress ratio is larger than zero, asymmetric permanent shear deformation is the major component, and cyclic shear deformation does not change much as the number of cyclic loads increases. The average shear stress ratio has less effects on the number of cyclic loads needed to fail, as compared with the cyclic shear stress ratio. The proposed stress-dependent failure contour can effectively be used to assess the cyclic shear strength of soil beneath the foundation for the design of offshore structures.

A series of cyclic triaxial tests were carried out on undisturbed samples to clarify the cyclic behavior of Bangkok(Ransit) soft clay. Based on the test results obtained from the cyclic tests employing different initial shear stress and different confining stress, the cyclic properties of clay such as shear strain development and cyclic strength were investigated. The results showed that with increase in the initial shear stress, the stress-strain curve was flattened to some extent. The cyclic strength expressed by the stress ratio was higher in the test with $1.0kgf/cm^2$ of confining stress, while the cyclic strength expressed by the deviator stress was higher in the test with $1.5kgf/cm^2$ of confining stress.

This paper provides a method to predict the ductile capacity of reinforced concrete beams that fail in shear after flexural yielding. The proposed method takes into account shear strength deterioration in the plastic hinge region of RC beams. The shear contribution of the concrete in the plastic hinge region decreases after flexural yielding of the beam due to a decrease in the effective compressive strength of the concrete. To verify the shear strength and the corresponding ductility of the proposed method, 8 RC beams were tested under reversed cyclic loading.
In this paper, cyclic loading tests on composite frame inner joints of steel-reinforced recycled concrete (SRRC) column-steel beam were conducted. The main objective of the test was to obtain the shear behavior and analyze the shear strength of the joints. The main design parameters in the test were recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) replacement percentage and axial compression ratio. The failure process, failure modes, hysteresis curves and strain characteristics of the joints were obtained, and the influences of design parameters on the shear strength of the joints have been also analysed in detail. Results show that the failure modes of the joints area are typical shear failure. The shear bearing capacity of the joints maximally decreased by 10.07% with the increase in the RCA replacement percentage, whereas the shear bearing capacity of the joints maximally increased by 16.6% with the increase in the axial compression ratio. A specific strain analysis suggests that the shear bearing capacity of the joints was mainly provided by the three shear elements of the recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) diagonal compression strut, steel webs and stirrups of the joint area. According to the shear mechanism and test results, the calculation formulas of the shear bearing capacity of the three main shear elements were deduced separately. Thus, the calculation model of the shear bearing capacity of the composite joints considering the adverse effects of the RCA replacement percentage was established through a superposition method. The calculated values of shear strength based on the calculation model were in good agreement with the test values. It indicates that the calculation method in this study can reasonably predict the shear bearing capacity of the composite frame inner joints of SRRC column-steel beam.
