  • The beams components subjected to the loading such as axial, bending and cyclic thermal loads were studied in this research. The used constitutive equations are those of elasto-plasticity coupled to ductile and/or creep damage. The nonlinear kinematic hardening behavior was considered in elastoplasticity modeling. The unified damage law proposed for ductile failure and fatigue by the author of Sermage et al. (2000) and Kachanov's creep damage model applied to cyclic creep and low cycle fatigue of beams. Based on the results of the analysis, the shakedown limit loads were determined through the calculation of the residual strains developed in the beam analysis. The iterative technique determines the shakedown limit load in an iterative manner by performing a series of full coupled elastic-plastic and continuum damage cyclic loading modeling. The maximum load carrying capacity of the beam can withstand, were determined and imposed on the Bree's interaction diagram. Comparison between the shakedown diagrams generated by or without creep and/or ductile damage for the loading patterns was presented.

  • The development of proper joint model, which can describe real phenomena exactly and still can be used easily, is one of the most important element for the analysis of the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of discontinuous rock mass. In this study, an elasto-plastic constitutive model of joint behavior considering asperity degradation was extended with the concept of first and second order asperities. The proposed model was implemented to numerical code with discrete finite joint element. The parametric study with the various asperity angles and degradation coefficients showed that the model can reproduce the shear behavior of typical rough joints well. Results of laboratory monotonic and cyclic shear tests were compared with those of numerical tests to validate the model. The hydraulic model considering the relations between gouge production and aperture was introduced to the mechanical model. In an attempt to examine the performance of the model, comparative numerical test was conducted. Permeability between joint surfaces increased rapidly at the first stage, but became nearly constant with increasing shear displacement due to gouge production and uniform variation of aperture distribution.

  • The bottom-leaded plastic(BLP) packages have attracted substantial attention since its appearance in the electronic industry. Since the solder materials have relatively low creep resistance and are susceptible to low cycle fatigue, the life of the solder joints under the thermal loading is a critical issue for the reliability The represent study established a finite element model for the analysis of the solder joint reliability under thermal cyclic loading. An elasto-plastic constitutive relation was adopted for solder materials in the modeling and analysis. A 28-pin BLP assembly is modeled to investigate the effects of various epoxy molding compound, leadframe materials on solder joint reliability. The fatigue life of solder joint is estimated by the modified Coffin-Hanson equation. The two coefficients in the equation are also determined. A new design for lead is also evaluated by using finite element analysis. Parametric studies have been conducted to investigate the dependence of solder joint fatigue life on various package materials.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the behavior of reservoir fill dam with the water level raising by use of the centrifugal model test and the numerical simulation. In this study, LIQCA2D-SF based on the cyclic elasto-plastic constitutive model proposed by Oka et al. (1999) is applied for numerical simulation. In order to investigate the displacements and the pore water pressures in the fill dam due to the water level raising velocity, three model tests in centrifugal field of 50g for fill dams were conducted. A comparison between the test result and the simulation result has provided the influence on the displacement and the pore water pressure of the fill dam with increasing up of the water level.

  • A fully coupled effective stress dynamic analysis procedure for modeling seismic liquefaction on slope is presented. An elasto-plastic formulation is used for the constitutive model UBCSAND in which the yield loci are radial lines of constant stress ratio and the flow rule is non-associated. This is incorporated into the 2D version of Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC) by modifying the existing Mohr-Coulomb model. This numerical procedure is used to simulate centrifuge test data from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). UBCSAND is first calibrated to cyclic direct simple shear tests performed on Nevada sand. Both pre- and post-liquefaction behaviour is captured. The centrifuge test is then modeled and the predicted accelerations, excess porewater pressures, and displacements are compared with the measurements. The results are shown to be in general agreement. The procedure is currently being used in the design of liquefaction remediation measures for a number of dam, bridge, tunnel, and pipeline projects in Western Canada.
