  • Recently, fuel prices have been continually raised in diesel engine. Such a change in the fuel price influences enormously the development trend of marine diesel engines for slow speed, In other words, the focus was shifted from large diameter and high speed to low fuel consumption. Accordingly, more efforts are being made for engine manufacturing and development to develop highly efficient engines. In this study. a single cylinder 4 stroke cycle DI slow speed diesel engine was designed and manufactured, a 4 stroke cycle was configured and basic performances were evaluated. The results are as follows. The optimal fuel injection timing had the lowest value when specific fuel consumption was in BTDC 8~$10^{\circ}$, a little more delayed compared to high speed diesel engines. Cycle variation of engines showed about 5% difference at full loads. This is a significantly small value compared to the cycle variation in which stable operation is possible, showing the high stability of engine operation is good. The torque and brake thermal efficiency of engine increased with an increase of engine 250-450 rpm. but fuel consumption ratio increased from the 450 rpm zone and thermal efficiency abruptly decreased. Mechanical efficiency was maximally 70% at a 400 rpm that was lower than normal engines according to the increase of mechanical frictional loss for cross head part. The purpose of this study was to get more practical engines by comparing the above results with those of slow speed 2 stroke cycle diesel engines.

  • In order to minimize compression power and analyze the cause of exergy loss for a dry ice production cycle with 3-stage compression, the variation of compression power was investigated and the exergy analysis was peformed for the cycle. In this cycle, $CO_2$, is used both as a refrigerant and as a raw material for dry ice. The behavior of compression power and irreversibility in the cycle were examined as a function of intermediate pressure. From this result, the conditions for the minimum compression power were obtained in terms of the first stage or the third stage pressure. In addition, the irreversibilities for the cycle were investigated with respect to the efficiency of compressor. Result shows that the optimum pressure is not consistent with the conventional pressure obtained from the equal-pressure-ratio assumption. This is mainly due to the change in mass flow rate of the intermediate stage compressor by the flash gas evaporation from the flash drums. Most important is that the present exergy analysis enabled us to find bad performance components for the cycle and informed us of methods to improve the cycle performance.

  • The transcription of the chitin synthase genes (chss) was cell cycle-regulated in Aspergillus nidulans and the expression pattern was classified into two groups. Group one, containing chsA and chsC, showed decreasing transcription level upon entry into the S-phase and no further variation during the remainder of the cell cycle. However, group two, containing chsB, chsD, and csmA showed a sharp decrease of mRNA level upon entry into the G2-phase and an increase during the M-phase. Our results suggested that the chss, belonging to same group with the similar expression pattern during the cell cycle are functionally linked and that chsD may play a role in hyphal growth and development in A. nidulans.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of a transcritical cycle for hot water heating using $CO_2$ as a working fluid. Some of the main parameters that affect the practical performance of the $CO_2$ system are discussed; the performance on the variation of refrigerant charge, changes in flow conditions of secondary fluids, and that with or without internal heat exchanger, The experimental results show that the optimum charge is approximately the same for various mass flow rates of the secondary fluid at gas cooler. The experimental results on the effect of secondary fluids are in general agreement with the experimental results of transcritical cycle in the open literature and show similar trend for conventional subcritical vapor compression cycles. The heat exchanger effectiveness increases with an increase of the heat exchange area of the internal heat exchanger regardless of the mass flow rate at the gas cooler.

  • Operation conditions of a reheat cycle gas turbine for a combined cycle power plant was analyzed. Based on measured performance parameters of the gas turbine, a performance analysis program predicted component characteristic parameters such as compressor air flow, compressor efficiency, efficiencies of both the high and low pressure turbines, and coolant flows. The predicted air flow and its variation with the inlet guide vane setting were sufficiently accurate. The compressor running characteristic in terms of the relations between air flow, pressure ratio and efficiency was presented. The variations of the efficiencies of both the high and low pressure turbines were also presented. Almost constant flow functions of both turbines were predicted. The current methodology and obtained data can be utilized for performance diagnosis.

  • Experiments have been conducted in order to make comparisons of a alternative refrigerant (R-410A) cycle characteristic with an existing refrigerant (R-22) cycle characteristic in terms of cooling capacity and coefficient of performance (COP). The parameters examined in the present work include air flow rate, indoor/outdoor air temperatures, and indoor relative humidity. These two refrigeration cycles share all components except compressor, accumulator, oil separator, and piping connecting them. The measurements were made using an air-enthalpy calorimeter. The experimental results show that the R-410A cycle has many advantages over indoor conditions while the R-22 cycle has better performance over outdoor conditions.

  • Objectives : The objective of this study is to compare the circadian patterns of heart rate variability assessed by 24-hour ambulatory electrocardiographic (ECG) recordings during day shift and night shift among the workers in the 5 days-concecutive-12-hour shift in an automobile factory in Korea. Methods : The study population consisted 300 workers, who were randomly selected among the 8700 total workers in one car factory. To analyse circadian variation, the 24-hour ECG recordings (Marquette) were measured during day shift (08:00-20:00 h) and night shift (20:00-08:00 h). Analysis was performed for all time and frequency domain measures of HRV. 233 workers completed taking 24-hour ECG recordings. Results : This study shows that the 24 hourcircadian variation mainly follows work/sleep cycle rather than day/night cycle among shift workers. This study also shows that among the night shift, the circadian variation between work and sleep cycle decreased compared to the work/sleep cycle among day shift workers. All time and frequency domain parameters (except LF/HF ratio) show significantly different between work and sleep in the day shift and night shift. Conclusion : These changes in heart rate variability circadian rhythms reflect significant reductions in cardiac parasympathetic activity with the most marked reduction in normal vagal activity among the shift workers. Especially, it suggests the circadian rhytm has blunted among the night workers. The quantification of the circadian variation in HRV can be a surrogates of workers' potential health risk, as well as suggests possible mechanisms through which the shift works compromise workers' health.

  • Numerical simulations of laminar flow over a sphere are conducted to investigate the effect of the Reynolds number on the characteristics of vortex shedding. The Reynolds numbers considered are between 300 and 475, covering unsteady planar-symmetric and asymmetric flows. Results show that the unsteady planar-symmetric flow can be categorized into two different regimes: single-frequency regime and multiple-frequency regime. The former has a single frequency component due to periodic shedding of the vortices with the same strength in every shedding cycle, while the latter has multiple frequency components due to cycle-to-cycle variation in the strength of shed vortices with the shedding angle fixed. The multiple-frequency planar-symmetric flow, which is newly found in the present study, occurs at Re=330${\sim}$360 between the single-frequency planar-symmetric flow and the asymmetric flow. On the other hand, the asymmetric flow occurs at Re${\geq}$365, where the vortices shed from the sphere show variation both in strength and shedding angle unlike the planar-symmetric flow. Also, it is shown that the breaking of planar symmetry is closely related to the imbalance of vortical strength between a pair of streamwise vortices.

  • The engine combustion is one of the most important process affecting performance and emissions. One effective way to improve the engine combustion is to control motion of the charge inside a cylinder by means of optimum induction system design, because the flame speed is mainly determined by the turbulence in a gasoline engine. This paper describes the measurement and characterization of mean velocity and turbulence intensity inside the cylinder of a 4-valve gasoline engine using laser Doppler velocimeter(LDV) under motoring(non-firing) conditions. Since the measured LDV data in each cycle show small cycle variation during compression stroke in the tested engine, the mean velocity and turbulence intensity are calculated by ensemble averaging method neglecting cycle variation effects. In the ensemble averaging method, the effects of the calculation window, in which velocities are assumed as the same crank angle, on mean velocity and turbulence intensity are fully investigated. In addition, the effects of measuring point on the flow characteristics are studied. With large calculation window, the mean velocity is shown to be less sensitive with respect to crank angle and turbulence intensity decrease in its absolute amplitude. When the piston approch to the top dead center of compression, the turbulence intensity is found to be homogeneous in the cylinder.
