It has been very important in various industry fields to improve the fatigue strength characteristics of bearings such as bearing life, fatigue limit, etc., because such poor properties could result in shortening the machinery life as well as in decreasing the accuracy. However, no successful heat treatment criterion seems to be available at present. In this study, the effect of the $170^{\circ}C\times120min$ tempering cycles repeated after $380^{\circ}C\times80min$ oil quenching for $800^{\circ}C$ spheroidizing-annealed bearing steel (STB2) as base metal on the $120^{\circ}C$ high temperature rotary bending fatigue strength characteristics were investigated, including the effects on hardness, Charpy impact value and micro-structure, in order to seek for the best heat treatment condition finally. The important results obtained are as follows : 1) The optimal cycle of tempering so that the fatigue strength .sigma. could become the highest was the 4th cycle. And it is confirmed that this $\sigma_{F}$ is about 6 times more increased than that of base metal, and about 1.3 times more increased than the case of the 1 cycle tempered. 2) As a result of the investigation for the effects of tempering cycles on hardness, the hardness at the tempering number of 2 thru 5 cyles was not decreased severely ; only about 10% decrease from those of the quenched and 1 cycle tempered case. Such hardness is equivalent to $H_{R}$/C61-62 with no bad effect on anti-abrasion of bearing steel. 3) In the case of 2 thru 5 cycle tempering as well as 1 cycle tempering, the impact value was not so improved comparing with the case of quenching, but an increase of 5 to 10% could be expected at least. 4) It was experimentally confirmed that the control of the mechanical properties improvement such as fatigue strength and fatigue life for bearing steels could be possible by the number of tempering cycles.

Low cycle fatigue tests are performed on high strength low alloy steels that be developed for submarine material. The relation between absorbed plastic strain energy and numbers of cycle to failure is examined in order to predict the low cycle fatigue life of structural steels by using plastic strain energy method. The cyclic properties are determined by a least square fit techniques. The life predicted by the plastic strain energy method is found to coincide with experiment data and results obtained from the Coffin-Manson method. Also the cyclic behavior of structural steels is characterized by cyclic softening with increasing number of cycle at room temperature. Especially, low cycle fatigue characteristics and microstructural changes of structural steels are investigated according to changing tempering temperatures. In the case of PFS steels, the $\varepsilon$-Cu is formed in 550C of tempering temperature and enhances the low cycle fatigue properties.

The carburising surface modification treatment of the die steel has been used for improving wear resistance and heat cycle strength of the die and preventing a pitting on the surface because the carbides are forming in the matrix during carburising. Generally, the hot forging die was used after quenching-tempering treatment or nitriding after quenching-tempering treatment. The nitriding after carburising on the surface of a hot die steel and a wear resistance die steels was suggested by SOUCHARD, JACQUOT. and BUVRON. This surface modification treatment improved the adhesive and abrasive wear resistance and friction coefficient. The process was introduced to the forging die of stainless steel, titanium alloy steel, alloy and medium carbon steel and the physical properties of the die after the treatment were improved. The surface hardening treatment of the nitriding, the carburising, the boriding, and TD process were used to improved the life time of the forging die. Also, the coating process of PVD, CVD and PCVD were used and the hard chromium plating was occasionally used. Therefore, this study analyzed the effects of the carburising time and the conditions of nitriding on STD61 steel. The case depth, the surface hardness, the forming carbide size and shape during overcarburising process on the die steel were also examined.
This study has been performed to find out the effect of austenitizing temperature, austempering temperature and its holding time, and tempering cycle on the mechanical properties such as impact resistance, hardness etc. of AISI $M_2$ Mo series high speed tool steel austempered or tempered after austempering treatment. The results obtained from the experiment are as follows ; (1) Optical micrograph has revealed that the transformation rate of bainite is delayed as the austenitizing temperature increases and that bainite is most apparently transformed at an austempering temperature of $290^{\circ}C$. (2) The amount of retained austenite during austempering has been analysed to be increased by the X-ray diffraction technique as the transformation product of bainite is increased. It has also been shown that the longer the holding time of austempering, the more the transformation quantity of bainite is formed, exhibiting, however, that the rate of bainitic transformation is considerably retarded after a certain period of holding time elapses. (3) Hardness measurement has shown that hardness values obtained after austempering increase with decreasing the amount of retained austenite. (4) The austempering and then tempering cycle has been formed to give hardness values which are more greatly improved as austenitizing temperature is increased. (5) The mechanical property of the specimen primary-tempered for 1 hour at $550^{\circ}C$ after austempering for 2 hours at $290^{\circ}C$ from the austenitizing temperature range of $1180^{\circ}C$ to $1210^{\circ}C$ have been estimated to be good values.
Construction of welding structure is greatly dependent upon welding heat cycle. Fracture toughness is decreased remarkablely due to coarse grained HAZ and inequal residual stress of three dimensions to originate in welding. Post weld heat treatment(PWHT) is carried out to increase the fracture toughness of HAZ and to remove the residual stress. There occur some problem such as toughness decrement and stress relief cracking(SRC) in the coarse grained HAZ subject to the effect of tempering treatment. Therefore, in this paper, the effect of heat inputs affecting cooling rate and PWHT under the no stress on fracture toughness were evaluated by crack opening displacement (COD), SEM and micro-hardness test. Experimental results are as follows; 1. Fracture toughness of weld HAZ is dependent upon weld heat cycle and it is decreased with increment of heat input, but the degree of improvement of fracture toughness after PWHT was linearly increased with heat input. 2. Hardness of the parent metal is not changed, but the softening of coarse grained HAZ is remarkable due to PWHT. 3. Fracture surface of as-weld show the perfect brittle fracture with the cleavage fracture, but after PWHT they appear the ductile fracture surface with dimple.
In this paper, high strength pressure vessel steels having the same chemical compositions were manufactured by the two different steel-making processes, such as vacuum degassing(VD) and electro-slag remelting(ESR) methods. After the steel-making process, they were normalized at $955^{\circ}C$, quenched at $843^{\circ}C$, and finally tempered at $550^{\circ}C$ or $450^{\circ}C$, resulting in tempered martensitic microstructures with different yielding strengths depending on the tempering conditions. Low-cycle fatigue(LCF) tests, fatigue crack growth rate(FCGR) tests, and fracture toughness tests were performed to investigate the fatigue and fracture behaviors of the pressure vessel steels. In contrast to very similar monotonic, LCF, and FCGR behaviors between VD and ESR steels, a quite difference was noticed in the fracture toughness. Fracture toughness of ESR steel was higher than that of VD steel, being attributed to the removal of impurities in steel-making process.
The large forgings used in chemical plants or nuclear power plants are produced by complex heat treatment. because of thickness up to 200~300 mm and weight up to 200~300 ton, setting proper heat treatment cycle is so difficult. In addition, defects of products make companies wasting large money and valuable time. In this study, to reduce try & err, when setting heat treatment of reactor pressure vessel steel SA508Gr.3, carrying out the basic mechanical property test of SA508 Gr.3 and testing hardness of SA508Gr.3 in various tempering temperature. and calculating temper curve with Hollomon-Jaffe parameter.
Conventional fracture test of resistance spot weld had been performed without consideration of paint baking process in automobile manufacturing line. This study was aim to investigate the effect of paint baking on fracture mode and load carrying capacity in fracture test for resistance spot welded 780TRIP steels. With paint baking cycle after resistance spot welds, peel tests and microhardness were conducted on the as-welded and baked samples. Resistance spot welds in AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steels) are prone to display partial interfacial fractures during fracture test or vehicle crash. Baking cycle increased the load-carrying capacity of the resistance spot welded samples and improved the fracture appearance from partial to full button fracture for the L-type peel tests. Specially, the differences in fracture appearance are apparent when the nugget size of spot welds is small enough to produce the partial interfacial fracture. The comparison of macrohardness and microstructure between as-welded and baked samples showed that there are no large difference in change the fracture mode. However, the results of the instrumented indentation test suggested that fusion zone and HAZ of baked sample have less tensile and yield strength and proves that the tempering effects are applied and enhanced the resistance to fracture on welds with application of baking cycle.
