Hacking Detection Mechanism of Cyber Attacks Modeling (외부 해킹 탐지를 위한 사이버 공격 모델링)

  • In order to actively respond to cyber attacks, not only the security systems such as IDS, IPS, and Firewalls, but also ESM, a system that detects cyber attacks by analyzing various log data, are preferably deployed. However, as the attacks be come more elaborate and advanced, existing signature-based detection methods start to face their limitations. In response to that, researches upon symptom detection technology based on attack modeling by employing big-data analysis technology are actively on-going. This symptom detection technology is effective when it can accurately extract features of attacks and manipulate them to successfully execute the attack modeling. We propose the ways to extract attack features which can play a role as the basis of the modeling and detect intelligent threats by carrying out scenario-based modeling.

  • The recent trend of cyber attack threat is mainly APT (Advanced Persistent Threat) attack. This attack is a combination of hacking techniques to try to steal important information assets of a corporation or individual, and social engineering hacking techniques aimed at human psychological factors. Spear phishing attacks, one of the most commonly used APT hacking techniques, are known to be easy to use and powerful hacking techniques, with more than 90% of the attacks being a key component of APT hacking attacks. The existing research for cyber security threat defense is mainly focused on the technical and policy aspects. However, in order to preemptively respond to intelligent hacking attacks, it is necessary to study different aspects from the viewpoint of social engineering. In this study, we analyze the correlation between human personality type (DISC) and cyber security threats, focusing on spear phishing attacks, and present countermeasures against security threats from a new perspective breaking existing frameworks.

  • Cyber defense exercise should require training on the latest cyber attacks and have a similar process to defense cyber attacks. In addition, it is also important to train on cyber resilience that can perform normal tasks or support equivalent tasks regardless of cyber attacks. In this paper, we proposed and developed a cyber range that can strengthen the elements of cyber resilience by performing cyber defense exercise in real time based on the cyber crisis alert issued when a cyber attack occurs in Korea. When BLUE, YELLOW, ORANGE, and RED warnings are issued according to the cyber crisis, our system performs proactive response, real time response, and post response according to the alarm. It can improve trainee's capability to respond to cyber threats by performing cyber defense exercise in a cyber crisis environment similar to the actual situation of Korea.

  • As a form of industrial control systems (ICS), nuclear instrumentation and control (I&C) systems have been digitalized increasingly. This has raised in turn cyber security concerns. Cyber security for ICS is important because cyber-attacks against ICS can cause not only equipment damage and loss of production but also personal and public safety hazards unlike in general IT environments. Numerous risk analyses have been carried out to enhance the safety of ICS and recently, many studies related to the cyber security of ICS are being conducted. Many existing risk analyses and cyber security studies have considered safety and cyber security separately. However, both safety and cyber security perspectives should be considered when analyzing risks for complex and critical ICS facilities such as nuclear power plants (NPPs). In this paper, the STPA-SafeSec methodology is selected to consider both safety and security perspectives when performing a risk analysis for NPPs in order to assess impacts on the safety by cyber-attacks against the digital I&C systems. The STPA-SafeSec methodology was applied to a test-bed system that simulates a condensate water (CD) system in an NPP. The process of the application up to the development of mitigation strategies is described in detail.

  • The exponential increase of malicious and criminal activities in cyber space is posing serious threat which could destabilize the foundation of modem information society. In particular, unexpected network paralysis or break-down created by the spread of malicious traffic could cause confusion and disorder in a nationwide scale, and unless effective countermeasures against such unexpected attacks are formulated in time, this could develop into a catastrophic condition. As a result, there has been vigorous effort and search to develop a functional state-level cyber-threat early-warning system however, the efforts have not yielded satisfying results or created plausible alternatives to date, due to the insufficiency of the existing system and technical difficulties. The existing cyber-threat forecasting and early-warning depend on the individual experience and ability of security manager whose decision is based on the limited security data collected from ESM (Enterprise Security Management) and TMS (Threat Management System). Consequently, this could result in a disastrous warning failure against a variety of unknown and unpredictable attacks. It is, therefore, the aim of this research to offer a conceptual design for "Knowledge-based Real-Time Cyber-Threat Early-Warning System" in order to counter increasinf threat of malicious and criminal activities in cyber suace, and promote further academic researches into developing a comprehensive real-time cyber-threat early-warning system to counter a variety of potential present and future cyber-attacks.

Analysis and prospect of North Korea's Cyber threat (북한의 사이버전 위협에 대한 분석과 전망)

  • In modern society, the development of Information and Communication Technology has given people a lot of opportunities. But on the other side cyber attack also gives enormous damage to people. Recently Korea has become the target of cyber attack. The threat of it is growing. Especially North Korea has committed hostile actions against South Korea. North Korea has recently attacked the computer networks of South Korea's important national facilities. The types of North Korea's cyber attacks include the followings. First, if we see it with the viewpoint of software, it tries to destroy or control the Internet, infects the networks with viruses, worms, Trojan Horse and Distributed Denial of Service. I suggest the following to solve the problem. First, South Korea should unify the organizations to respond to the attacks of North Korea, as North Korea has a unified organization for the cyber attack. Second, they should think about the establishment of "Cyber Terrorism Prevention Act" to systematically respond to the software attacks.

  • The internet is established as the basic infrastructure of our life and we live in cyberspace on internet, and additionally many problems on cyberspace arise. One among them is the most serious cyber attack of the information society. The cyber attacks increase each year, attack type and the intelligence is evolving, and then the cyber ecosystem is getting more complicated. In this study, we analyze the Internet last incident status and type of Internet invasion and hacking methods, and analyze the corresponding national and international organizations and associations active status.

  • Various cyber attacks against our society and the government are continuing, and cases and damages are reported from time to time. And the area of cyber attack is not limited to cyberspace, but it is expanding into physical domain and affecting it. In the military arena, we have established and implemented the principle of responding proportionally to enemy physical attacks. This proportionality principle is also required in the version where the region is expanding. In order to apply it, it is necessary to have a quantitative and qualitative countermeasure against cyber attack. However, due to the nature of cyber attacks, it is not easy to assess the damage accurately and it is difficult to respond to the proportionality principle and the proportional nature. In this study, we calculated the damage scale by quantitatively and qualitatively evaluating the cyber attack damage using the Gorden-Lobe model and the security scoring technique based on the scenario. It is expected that the calculated results will be provided as appropriate level and criterion to counteract cyber attack.

An Intelligent Game Theoretic Model With Machine Learning For Online Cybersecurity Risk Management

  • Cyber security and resilience are phrases that describe safeguards of ICTs (information and communication technologies) from cyber-attacks or mitigations of cyber event impacts. The sole purpose of Risk models are detections, analyses, and handling by considering all relevant perceptions of risks. The current research effort has resulted in the development of a new paradigm for safeguarding services offered online which can be utilized by both service providers and users. customers. However, rather of relying on detailed studies, this approach emphasizes task selection and execution that leads to successful risk treatment outcomes. Modelling intelligent CSGs (Cyber Security Games) using MLTs (machine learning techniques) was the focus of this research. By limiting mission risk, CSGs maximize ability of systems to operate unhindered in cyber environments. The suggested framework's main components are the Threat and Risk models. These models are tailored to meet the special characteristics of online services as well as the cyberspace environment. A risk management procedure is included in the framework. Risk scores are computed by combining probabilities of successful attacks with findings of impact models that predict cyber catastrophe consequences. To assess successful attacks, models emulating defense against threats can be used in topologies. CSGs consider widespread interconnectivity of cyber systems which forces defending all multi-step attack paths. In contrast, attackers just need one of the paths to succeed. CSGs are game-theoretic methods for identifying defense measures and reducing risks for systems and probe for maximum cyber risks using game formulations (MiniMax). To detect the impacts, the attacker player creates an attack tree for each state of the game using a modified Extreme Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (that sees numerous compromises ahead). Based on the findings, the proposed model has a high level of security for the web sources used in the experiment.

  • Cyberspace is becoming increasingly important. Incidentally, there exist possibilities of the industrial secrets leaked, cyber attacks, privacy protection problems. In addition, there are growing concern of cyber war between nations. Thus potential hazards in cyberspace and the extent of damage are getting bigger. Therefore, a systematic understanding of cyber damage and damage scale is very important and damage estimation method should be developed to establish solid cyber protection system. In this study, current and potential damage types are understood and damage scales are surveyed based on the analysis of existing studies and try to develop a reasonable methods to estimate economic effects of cyber protection.
