  • In this study, based on Weibull proportional age reduction model and age replacement policy, we analyze economic life of cutting tool which allows re-grinding. Re-grinding task, usually for high-priced machining tools(e.g., broaching tool), is a kind of preventive maintenance activities to extend tool life at the completion of a lot production. The numerical results are also presented. Among the parameters of Weibull proportional age reduction model, the re-grinding effect parameter and Weibull shape parameter have a strong effect on economic tool life, and in the cost parameters, shortage cost is most sensitive. With further study on the parameter estimation of tool life process and cost function, this study can be expected to give more practical contribution to management of general machining tools.

  • The high-speed machining in the manufacturing industry field has been widely applied for parts of vehicles, aircraft, ships, electronics, etc., recently, because the effect of cost savings for shortening processing time and improving productivity is great. The purpose in this study is to investigate the effect of cutting depth on the surface roughness of workpiece with the spindle rotational speed and feed rate of high-speed machines as a parameter to find the optimal depth in the finishing for ball end mill of the aluminum alloy 7075 which is used much in aircraft parts. When the cutting depth for the respective feed rate and spindle rotational speed is varied from 0.1 mm to 0.7 mm at intervals of 0.2 mm in the wet finishing of the aluminum alloy 7075 by the insoluble cutting oils and high-speed machining used in the rough machining of previous study, the surface roughness values and the cutting temperature are measured. In addition, the cutting surface shapes of test specimens are observed by optical microscope and compared with respectively. It is found that the surface roughness values and the temperature generated during machining are increased as the feed rate and cutting depth are raised, but those are decreased as the spindle rotational speed is increased.

  • Machinability in metal cutting processes depends on cutting input conditions such as cutting velocity, feed rate, depth of cut, types of work material and tool shape factors. In this study, to assess chip breaking characteristics of a turning process, an equivalent oblique cutting system to this has been established. And the equivalent effective rake angle was determined using side rake angle, back rake angle and side cutting edge angle of the tool. A non-dimensional parameter, Chip breaking index(CB), was used to assess Chip breaking characteristics of chip in conjunction with the equivalent effective rake angle. In case of positive rake angles of the equivalent effective rake, the back rake angle has little effect on the chip breaking characteristics however, in case of negative ones, the side rake angle has some effect on Chip breaking characteristics.

  • The control of diamond turning is usually achieved through a laser-interferometer feedback of slide position. If the tool post is rigid and the material removal process is relatively static, then such a non-collocated position feedback control scheme may surface. However, as the accuracy requirement gets tighter and desired surface contours become more complex, the need for a direct tool-tip sensing becomes inevitable. The physical constraints of the machining process prohibit any reasonable implementation of a tool-tip motion measurement. It is proposed that the measured force normal to the face of the workpiece can be filtered through an appropriate admittance transfer function to result in the estimated depth of cut. This can be compared to the desired depth of cut to generate the adjustment control action in addition to position feedback control. In this work, the design methodology on the admittance model-based control with a conventional controller is presented. The recursive least-squares algorithm with forgetting factor is proposed to identify the parameters and update the cutting process in real time. The normal cutting forces are measured to identify the cutting dynamics in the real diamond turning process using the precision dynamometer. Based on the parameter estimation of cutting dynamics and the admittance model-based nanodynamic control scheme, simulation results are shown.

  • Analytical solution of micro-scale milling process is presented in order to suggest available machining conditions. The size effect should be considered to determine cutting characteristics in micro-scale cutting. The feed per tooth is the most dominant cutting parameter related to the size effect in micro-scale milling process. In order to determine the feed per tooth at which chips can be formed, the finite element method is used. The finite element method is employed by utilizing the Johnson-Cook (JC) model as a constitutive model of work material flow stress. Machining experiments are performed to validate the simulation results by using a micro-machining stage. The validation is conducted by observing cutting force signals from a cutting tool and the conditions of the machined surface of the workpiece.

  • The term ‘High Speed Machining’has been used for many years to describe end milling with small diameter tools at high rotational speeds, typically 10,000 - 100,000 rpm. The process was applied in the aerospace industry fur the machining of light alloys, notably aluminium. In recent you, however, the mold and die industry has begun to use the technology for the production of components, including those manufactured from hardened tool steels. And the end mill is an important tool in the milling process. A typical examples for the end mill is the milling of pocket and slot in which a lot of material is removed from the workpiece. Therefore the proper selection of cutting parameter fur end milling is one of the important factors affecting the cutting cost. The one of the advantages of HSM is cutting thin-walled part of light alloy like Al(thinkness about 0.1mm). In this paper, firstly, we study characteristics of HSM, and then, we choose the optimal parameters(cutting forces) to cut thin-walled Al part by experiment.

  • A Study was made on falnk wear in carbide tools in turning SUS304 steel. When an austenitic stainless steel (SUS304 steel) is cut with the tool, saw-toothed chip are produced. It is found that machining SUS304 steel would make a tool worn fast. For increasing productivity, tool wear has to be predicted and controlled. An amended cutting geometry consisting of a negative rake angle ($-6^{\circ}$ ) and a high clearance angle ($-17^{\circ}$ ) is proposed for decreasing carbide tool wear (flank) in the machining of SUS304 steel. The amended cutting geometry is found to make the flank wear lower than a general cutting geometry (rake angle $6^{\circ}$ , clearance angle $5^{\circ}$). The effects of the three cutting variables (cutting speed, feed, tool radius) on the flank wear analyzed by fiting a simple first-order model containing interaction terms to each flank wear parameter by means of regression analysis and the predicted from first-order regression analysis model equation of flank wear.

  • For more than 10 years, the laser process has been studied for dismantling work; however, relatively few research works have addressed the effect of high-power fiber laser cutting for thick sections. Since in the nuclear sector, a significant quantity of thick material is required to be cut, this study aims to improve the reliability of laser cutting for such work and indicates guidelines to optimize the cutting procedure, in particular, nozzle combinations (standoff distance and focus position), to minimize waste material. The results obtained show the performance levels that can be reached with 10 kW fiber lasers, using which it is possible to obtain narrower kerfs than those found in published results obtained with other lasers. Nonetheless, fiber lasers appear to show the same effects as those of $CO_2$ and ND:YAG lasers. Thus, the main factor that affects the kerf width is the focal position, which means that minimum laser spot diameters are advised for smaller kerf widths.

  • A recursive parameter estimation method is applied to spindle deflection model during boring process. The spindle infeed rate is then determined to preserve the diametral tolerance of bore. This estimation method is further extended to adaptive control by application of the variance perturbation method. The results of computer simulation attest that the proposed method renders the optimal cutting conditions, maintaining the diametral accuracy of bore, regardless of parameter fluctuations. The proposed method necessitating only post-process measurements features that initialization of parameter guess values in simple, a priori knowledge on parameter variations is not needed and the accurate estimation of optimal spindle infeed rate is obtained, even if the parameter estimation may be poor.

  • The demands for robotic and automatic system are continually increasing in manufacturing fields. There were so many studies to monitor and predict system, but it were mainly relied upon measuring of cutting force, current of motor spindle and using acoustic sensor, etc. In this study digital image of time series sequence was acquired taking advantage of optical technique. Then, mean square error was obtained from it and was available for useful observation data. The parameter was estimated using PAA(parameter adaptation algorithm) from observation data. AR model was selected for system model, fifth order was decided according to parameter estimation. Uncorrelation test was also carried out to verify convergence of parameter. Through the proceedings, we found there was a system stability.
