Machinability in metal cutting processes depends on cutting input conditions such as cutting velocity, feed rate, depth of cut, types of work material and tool shape factors. In this study, to assess chip breaking characteristics of a turning process, an equivalent oblique cutting system to this has been established. And the equivalent effective rake angle was determined using side rake angle, back rake angle and side cutting edge angle of the tool. A non-dimensional parameter, Chip breaking index(CB), was used to assess Chip breaking characteristics of chip in conjunction with the equivalent effective rake angle. In case of positive rake angles of the equivalent effective rake, the back rake angle has little effect on the chip breaking characteristics however, in case of negative ones, the side rake angle has some effect on Chip breaking characteristics.

In tool condition monitoring systems, parameters should be set to a certain threshold. In many cases, however, the threshold is dependent on cutting conditions, especially the radial immersion ratio. In this presented is a method of on-line estimation of the radial immersion ratio in face milling. When a tooth finishes sweeping, a sudden drop of cutting force occurs. The force drop is equal to the cutting force that acting on a tooth at the swept angle of cut and can be acquired from cutting force signals in feed and cross-feed directions. Average cutting force per tooth period can also be calculated from cutting force signals in two directions. The ratio to cutting forces in two directions acting on a tooth at a certain swept angle of cut and the ratio of average cutting forces in two directions per tooth period are functions of the swept angle of cut and the ratio of radial to tangential cutting forces. Using these parameters, the radial immersion ratio is estimated. Various experiments are performed to verify the proposed method. The results show that the radial immersion ratio can be estimated by this method regardless of other cutting conditions.

Radial immersion ratio is an important factor to determine the threshold in face milling and should be estimated in process for automatic force regulation. In this paper, presented is a method of on-line estimation of the radial immersion ratio using cutting force. When a tooth finishes sweeping, sudden drop of cutting forces occurs. This force drop is equal to the cutting force that acts on a single tooth at the swept angle of cut and can be obtained from cutting force signal in feed and cross-feed direction. The ratio of cutting forces in feed and cross-feed directions acting on the single tooth at the swept angle of cut is a function of the swept angle of cut and the ratio of radial to tangential cutting force. In the research, it is found that the ratio of radial to tangential cutting force is not affected by cutting conditions and axial rake angle. Therefore, the ratio of radial to tangential cutting force determined by just one preliminary experiment can be used regardless of the cutting conditions. Using the measured cutting force and predetermined ratio, the radial immersion ratio is estimated. Various experiments show that the radial immersion ratio and instantaneous ratio of the radial to tangential direction cutting force can be estimated very well by the proposed method.

The objective of this research is to use an analytical and experimental approach to develop optimal tool geometry for high speed machining. The tool geometry parameters and cutting process have complex relationships. Until now, numerous cutting tests were needed to acquire optimal design of endmill for the purpose of high speed machining, dut to the insufficient knowledge about process in high speed machining. In order to improve the cutting ability of endmill, a model for optimal cutter shape was developed to minimize resultant cutting force by combing cutting force and wear test and surface roughness test from optimized and conventional cutter with the same cutting condition. Using various tools with different geometry, relationships between the tool geometry parameter, rake angle, clearance angle, lengh of cutter have been stuied.

This study presents a procedure for analyzing chip-tool friction and shear processes in 3-D cutting with a single point tool. The edge of a single point tool including a circular nose is modified to an equivalent straight edge, thereby reducing the 3-D cutting with a single point tool to the equivalent of oblique cutting. Then, by transforming the conventional coordinate systems and using the measurements of three cutting force components, the force components on the rake face and shear plane of the equivalent oblique cutting system can be obtained. As a result, the chip-tool friction and shear characteristics of 3-D cutting with a single point tool can be assessed.

LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) panel cutting problem is a sort of two dimensional cutting stock problem. A cutting stock problem is problem that it minimizes the loss of the stock when a stock is cut into various parts. In the most research of the two dimensional cutting stock problem, it is supposed that the relative angle of a stock and parts is not important. Usually the angle is regarded as horizontal or perpendicular. In the manufacturing of polarizing film of LCD, the relative angle should be maintained at some specific angle because of the physical and/or chemical characteristics of raw material. We propose a mathematical model for solving this problem, a two-dimensional non-Guillotine cutting stock problem that is restricted by an arranged angle. Some example problems are solved by the C++ program using ILOG CPLEX classes. We could get the verification and validation of the suggested model based on the solutions.

The technique of high speed machining is widely studied in machining fields, because the high efficiency and accuracy in machining can be obtained in high speed machining. Unfortunately the development of tool fur high speed machining in not close behind that of machine tool. In this study, 10 types flat endmill is prepared for obtaining data according to tool shape. Especially, we concentrated in helix angle, number of cutting edge and rake angle. Cutting condition is selected for several experiments and measuring cutting farce, tool life, tool wear and chip shape according to cutting length. 3-axis cutting farces are acquired from the tool dynamometer with high natural frequency, as the conventional tool dynamometer (9257B, Kistler) has cannot measure the state of high frequency force. Particularly, we found out that the axial cutting force waveform has a good relation with tool wear features. And flow is interrupted at the beginning of cutting by the decrease of rake angle. By above results. it is suggested the endmill tool with 45$^{\circ}$helix angle, 6 cutting edge and -15$^{\circ}$rake angle is suitable for high speed machining.

In this study, hemisphere and cylindrical shapes were machined for different tool paths and machining conditions with ball endmill cutters. Tool deflection, cutting forces and shape accuracy were measured according to the inclination position of the sculptured surface. As the decreasing of inclination position angle, the tool deflection was increased due to the decreased cutting speed when the cutting edge is approaching toward the center. Tool deflection when upward cutting is obtained less than that of downward cutting and down-milling in upward cutting showed the least tool deflection for the sculptured surface. Roundness values were found in least roundness error when down-milling in upward cutting. It is obtained the very little difference between 90。and 45。 of inclination position angle. The best surface roughness value was obtained in upward up-milling and showed different tendency with tool deflection and cutting force. For down-milling, the cutting resistance of the side wall direction is larger than that of feed direction. Therefore, this phenomenon which is received over cutting resistance can be caused of chatter.

In this study, the variations of cutter acting forces depending on cutting conditions were examined to obtain basic data for roadheader cutting head design. The linear cutting tests were performed in the condition of different attack angles, penetration depths, cutter spacings by using a slim conical pick for the light cutting condition. Cutter acting forces were measured by 3-directional load cell under different test conditions, and the analysis for cutting performance were carried out after calculating average values of the measured results. It is confirmed that the optimal cutting condition for the mortar specimen is the 50 degree attack angle, the cutter spacing of 12 mm, the cutting depth of 9 mm which are obtained from the analysis results. In addition, 50 degree attack angle is more effective than 45 degree attack angle to design optimal specifications of cutting head.
