The cutting characteristics, such as cuttin g force, surface roughness and surface profile, are varied according to the variation of cutting directions. Free surface is cut using ball end mill, the surface profile is greatly varied depending upon the cutting direction. So this study will deal with the characteristics of cutting such as cutting efficiency according to the inclined plane of the workpiece, the cutting force according to tool path, surface profile and the roughness of surface. The optimal cutting direction to be applied the cutting for 3-D sculptured surfaces can be show through the results of this study.

  • In this study, a cutting force in the Ball-end milling process is calculated using Z-map. Z-map can describe any type of cutting area resulting from the previous cutting geometry and cutting condition. Cutting edge of a ball-end mill is divided into infinitesimal cutting edge elements and the position of the ele- ment is projected to the cutter plane normal to the Z axis. Also the cutting area in the cutter plane is obtained by using the Z-map. Comparing this projected position with cutting area, it can be determined whether it engages in the cutting. The cutting force can be calculated by numerical integration of cutting force acting on the engaged cutting edge elements. A series of experiments such as contouring and upward/downward ramp cutting was performed to verify the calculated cutting force.

  • The finite element method is applied to analyze the mechanism of metal cutting, especially micro metal cutting. This paper introduces some effects, such as constitutive deformation laws of workpiece material, friction of tool-chip contact interfaces, tool rake angle and also simulate the cutting process, chip formation and geometry, tool-chip contact, reaction force of tool. Under the usual plane strain assumption, quasi-static analysis were performed with variation of tool-chip interface friction coefficients and tool rake angles. In this analysis, cutting speed, cutting depth set to 8m/sec, 0.02mm, respectively. Some cutting parameters are affected to cutting force, plastic deformation of chip, shear plane angle, chip thickness and tool-chip contact length and reaction forces on tool. Several aspects of the metal cutting process predicted by the finite element analysis provide information about tool shape design and optimal cutting conditions.

  • This paper deals with the establishment of the cutting direction on inclined plane by using ball end mill. Ball-end milling is widely used for free form surface die and mold. In these machining, the cutting parts vary because the tool tip is hemisphere shaped. The cutting characteristics, such as cutting force, surface roughness and surface profile are varied according to the variation of cutting directions. The effective tool diameter was calculated on different tilt angles and tool-path. Tool life and cutting characteristics were estimated on variation of cutting directions in the same cutting speed. In this paper, the optimal cutting direction which can be applied 3-D sculpture surface cutting is suggested.

  • In modern manufacturing, many products that have geometrically complicated features, including three-dimensional sculptured surfaces, are being designed and produced to meet various sophisticated functional specifications. The cutting force is required not only for the design of machine and cutting tools, but also for the determination of the cutting conditions for the various machining operations. The ball-end mill is deflected by the cutting force and, the tool deflection is one of the main reasons of the machining errors on a free-form surface. Hence, The cutting force generated in the ball-end milling is the most important property of the machining. The purpose of this study is to find the characteristics of the cutting force in inclined plane and the resultant machining errors in the ball-end milling process. Although the depth of cut is constant in the inclined plane, the cutting force area varies due to the hemisphere of the ball-end mill.

  • The forced vibration analysis of the outer-clamped spinnig annular disk with arbitrary in-plane is formulated to investigate the influence of non-uniform tension on the cutting accuracy of wafer cutting machine. The arbitrary in-plan force along the outer edge of an annular plate is expressed as a Fourier series. Galerkin method and modal superposition method are employed to obtain the forced responses under the static force and the impulse force in astationary coordinate. Through qualitative and quantitative analyses, it can be found that forced and impulse responses are sensitive to the non-uniformity of in-plane force, which can bring a bad effect to the accuracy of wafer cutting process. Also, in case of a spinning disk with non-uniform in-plane force, critical speed is required to define in a different way, compared with conventional definition in axi-symmetrical spinning disk.

  • Cutting forces in ball-end milling of slanted surfaces are calculated. The cutting area is determined from the Z-map of the surface geometry and current cutter location. The obtained cutting area is projected onto the cutter plane normal to the Z-axis and compared with cutting edge element location. Cutting force is calculated by integration of elemental cutting forces of engaged cutting edge elements. Experiments with various slanted angles were performed to verify the proposed cutting force estimation model. It is shown that the proposed method predicts cutting force effectively for any geometry including sculptured surfaces with cusp marks and surfaces with pockets and holes.

  • The purpose of this paper is to further extend the theoretical understanding of the dynamic end milling process and to derive a computational model to predict the milling force components. A comparative assessment of different cutting force models is performed to demonstrate that the instantaneous shear plane based formulation is physically sound and offers the best agreement with experimental results. The procedure f3r the calculation of the model parameters used in the cutting force model, based on experimental data, has been presented. The validity of the proposed computational model has been experimentally verified through a series of cutting tests.

  • The object of this study is to achieve a gteater understanding of meterial removal process and its mechanism. In this study, some applications of finite element techniques are applied to analyze the chip formation and cutting heat generation mechanism of metal cutting. To know the effect of cutting parameters, simulations employed some independent cutting variables change, such as constitutive deformation laws of workpiece and tool material, frictional coefficients and tool-chip contact interfaces, cutting speed, tool rake angles, depth of cut and this simulations also include large elastic-plastic defor- mation, adiabetic thermal analysis. Under a usual plane strain assumption, quasi-static, thermal-mechanical coupling analysis generate detailed informations about chip formation process and cutting heat generation mechanism Some cutting parameters are affected to cutting force, plastic deformation of chip, shear plane angle, chip thickness and tool-chip contact length and reaction force on tool, cutting temperature and thermal behavior. Several aspects of the metal cutting process predicted by the finite element analysis provide information about tool shape design and optimal cutting conditions.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the biomechanical differences of lower extremity joints of the frontal plane during sidestep cutting in male and female Judo athletes. In the knee and hip joint, the female group showed a smaller angle than the male group at the time of IC(initial contact). But peak knee joint adduction moment of female group was greater than male group(p<.05). Therefore, female Judo athletes were more likely to injure their knees at the point where their initial foot contacted the ground than male athletes during sidestep cutting.
