  • The present study aims to monitor pesticide residues in cut flowers collected from the farms and markets. Cut flowers used in this study included rose, lily and chrysanthemum collected from June to September, 2008. Samples were collected once from farms in Hwasung, Goyang (Gyeonggi-do), Inje (Gangwon-do) and thrice from wholesale market in Namdaemunm, Yangjae and Gangnam (Seoul). Total of 24 pesticides (12 fungicides, 11 pesticides and 1 acaricide) were detected from samples collected from farm and total of 64 pesticides (25 fungicides, 36 pesticides, 1 acaricide and 2 fungicides) were detected from samples collected from wholesale market. The highest detection frequency of pesticide from farm was for carbaryl (15%) and for boscalid, fluacrypyrin, fluquinconazole, methomyl, pyraclostrobin, trifloxystrohin (10%), with overall detection of $0.1-36.99\;mg\;kg^{-1}$. While the highest detection frequency of pesticides from wholesale market was for carbaryl, fluquinoconazole and kresoxim-methyl (18.52%), methomyl (16.6%), and methiocarb and thiacloprid (12.96%) with overall detection amount of $0.1-56.2\;mg\;kg^{-1}$. Higher amount of pesticides were detected in leaves than in flowers. Among the pesticides detected, detection frequency of unregistered pesticides for rose, chrysanthemum and lily was 55%, 60% and 63% collected from farms and 47%, 60% and 89% collected from markets, respectively. These pesticides require registration and further monitoring in floricultural crops.

  • Stem firmness and flowering response of cut lily as influenced by medium composition (Control; Upland soil, Pt; Peatmoss, Pe; Perilite, Ve; Vermiculite, Rrh; Rotted rice-hull, RPt: Russian Peatmoss) were studied. For 'Casa Blanca', plant height and length of flower stalk increased when bulbs were planted in Pt:Rrh:Ve (1:1:1, v.v$^{-1}$ ), and dried leaves of lower part plants decreased in RPt:Pe:Rrh (1:1:1, v.v$^{-1}$ ). In case of 'Marco Polo', plant height and length of lower stalk increased in Pt:Rrh (1:1, v.v$^{-1}$ ) as compared to other treatment, number of leaves and dried leaves increased when bulbs were planted in RPt:Pe:Rrh (1:1:1, v.v$^{-1}$ ) as compared to the control. Flowering of 'Casa Blanca' increased in RPt:Pe:Rrh (1:1:1, v.v$^{-1}$ ) as compared to the control and that o 'Marco Polo' increased when bulbs planted in Pt:Rrh(1:1, v.v$^{-1}$ ). Flower-bud blasting of both cultivars increased with Pt as compared. Stem firmness of 'Casa Blanca' increased in Pt:Pe:Ve (1:1:1, v.v$^{-1}$ ), and especially stem firmness of upper part plant of 'Marco Polo' increased in Pt:Rrh (1:1, v.v$^{-1}$ ) as compared to the control. Generally, stem firmness of 'Casa Blanca' was not influenced by the culture medium.

  • A new asiatic lily cultivar 'Point' was derived from a cross between $Lilium$ $concolor$ var. $partheneion$ and 97-5 with orange colored petals made in 2000. The selection and the survey for the flower characteristics were conducted from 2005 to 2008 by using vinyl tunnels and greenhouse at Highland Agriculture Research Center, NICS, RDA. Based on flower color, 'Point' cultivar belongs to orange red group (O-R N30C). There was lots of spots in petal. The flowers had brown stigma and dark brown pollen. The stem color was dark purple. The flowering date was July 8. The plant height was 88.2 cm and flower numbers were 5.4 ea. The length and width of petal were 6.3 cm and 3.2 cm, respectively. The flower size was smaller than that of 'Prato' cultivar. The number of leaves was 12.2 ea. The length and width of leaves were 9.2 cm and 1.1 cm, respectively. The weight and circumference of bulb were about 24.6 g and 11.6 cm, respectively. 'Point' cultivar had resistance to bulb rot disease. The flowering duration was 16.1 days. The preference was good to 4.1 on 5 grades. 'Point' cultivar was registered as a new variety with No. 3446 in Korea Seed and Variety Service on April 2011.

  • The white flowered 'Eorayeon 2ho' is a cultivar of Lilium ${\times}$ formolonga developed in Department of Horticultural Sciences, Kangwon National University, Chuncheon, Korea. $F_1$ hybrid LA-77 was selected from the cross between a selected selting line($S_3$) of L. longiflorum 'Lorina' and a selfing line($S_3$) of L. ${\times}$ formolonga 'Augusta' in 2000. The $F_1$ hybrid LA-77 was backcrossed by a selected line of L. ${\times}$ far molonga 'Raizan No. 1' from 2001 to 2002. 'MF-No.2' was preliminarily selected for its upward flowering habit and high plant height. The evaluation of characteristics was investigated from 2003 to 2004 in Chuncheon and Yungweol, Kangwon province. 'Eorayeon 2ho' blooms in early July at outside, with high resistance to Botrytis and showing upward flowering habit. The plant height is 132.6 cm and the percentage of seed germination is 95.3%. Mean tepal length and width are 16.0 em and 4.3 cm, respectively. The length and width of leaf is 12.3 and 3.2 cm, respectively. This seed propagating cultivar shows high plant height suitable for a cut flower.

  • The aspect of flowering was investigated in 'Georgia' cut lilies which had four flowers per stem. Concurrently effects of preservative solutions on longevity, petal length, water uptake and fresh weight of cut flowers were examined. 1. Days of opening of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd flower were 1-2 days, 3-4 days and 5-6days after beginning of holding treatment respectively. But the 4th flower was opened 9-10 days after beginning of holding treatment when the 1st and 2nd flowers were wilting or drying. 2. The later the opening of flower in a stem was, the shorter the longevity of flower became. But the effects of preservative solutions on longevity were gradually increased as the opening of flower was late in a stem. 3. Preservative solutions containing sucrose and $AgNO_3$ or HQ were able to increase petal length and longevity of the 3rd and 4th flowers sufficiently like the 1st and 2nd flowers. 4. Petal length, water uptake, fresh weight and longevity of cut lilies held in preservative solution containing sucrose, $AgNO_3$ and HQ were increased significantly compared with others. Solution containing sucrose alone increased longevity but decreased water uptake remarkably and did not increase fresh weight and petal length effectively compared with the control.

  • Embryo culture, ovule culture and ovary slice culture were tested to find optimum method for overcoming post fertilization barrier in interspecific crosses between L. longiflorum 'Gelria' and L. cernuum. Although reciprocal crosses between the species were carried out by cut-style pollination method, fruits developed only in crosses of L. longiflorum${\times}$L. cernuum. On the 40 days after pollination, ovaries were sliced into 2-4mm thickness and cultured on a hormone-free Murashige-Skoog (MS) medium, supplemented with 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10% sucrose. For the L. longiflorum Gelria'${\times}$L. cernuum cross, ovule development was found to be best at 6% sucrose and a lot of hybrid plant lets established directly from the ovary slice culture and subsequent ovule culture. High concentration of sucrose above 8% made ovules abort or vitrificate from 40 days after culture. In contrast, ovules from the L. cernuum${\times}$L. longiflorum 'Gelria' cross swelled well in ovary slice culture, however, they did not germinated in subsequent ovule culture. On the 60 days after pollination, ovules thicker than 0.6mm was interpreted as one containing embryo. The embryo size ranged from 1.2 mm to 1.7 mm, and in vitro development of the excised embryos was found to be best with the MS medium (pH 5.8), supplemented with $0.1-1 mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ NAA and 6% sucrose. Thick ovules excised 60 days after pollination germinated about 60% as normal seeds in MS medium supplemented with 6% sucrose and free hormone. The ovule culture 60 days after pollination was concluded to be most recommendable to produce interspecific hybrids in large scale crosses between L. longiflorum 'Gelria' and L. cernuum by the reason of easy procedure.
