Effect of Alkali Metal Ions on Alkaline Ethanolysis of 2-Pyridyl and 4-Pyridyl Benzoates in Anhydrous Ethanol

  • Pseudo-first-order rate constants ($k_{obsd}$) have been measured for nucleophilic substitution reactions of 2-pyridyl benzoate 5 with alkali metal ethoxides (EtOM, M = Li, Na, K) in anhydrous ethanol. The plots of $k_{obsd}$ vs. $[EtOM]_o$ are curved upwardly but linear in the excess presence of 18-crown-6-ether (18C6) with significant decreased $k_{obsd}$ values in the reaction with EtOK. The $k_{obsd}$ value for the reaction of 5 with a given EtONa concentration decreases steeply upon addition of 15-crown-5-ether (15C5) to the reaction medium up to ca. [15C5]/$[EtONa]_o$ = 1, and remains nearly constant thereafter, indicating that $M^+$ ions catalyze the reaction in the absence of the complexing agents. Dissection $k_{obsd}$ into $k_{EtO^-}$- and $k_{EtOM}$, i.e., the second-order rate constants for the reaction with the dissociated $EtO^-$ and the ion-paired EtOM, respectively has revealed that ion-paired EtOM is 3.2 - 4.6 times more reactive than dissociated $EtO^-$. It has been concluded that $M^+$ ions increase the electrophilicity of the reaction center through a 6-membered cyclic transition state. This idea has been examined from the corresponding reactions of 4-pyridyl benzoate 6, which cannot form such a 6-membered cyclic transition state.

Study on mechanical behavioral characteristics of the curved FRP-concrete composite member for utilization as a tunnel lining structure (터널 라이닝 구조체로서 활용을 위한 곡면 FRP-콘크리트 복합부재의 역학적 거동특성 분석 연구)

  • Utilization of the fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) material has been increased as an alternative in a bid to supplement the problems with general construction materials such as long-term problems corrosion, etc. However, there are still many problems in using a linear-shaped FRP material for a tunnel lining structure which has arch-shape in general. In this study, the loading tests for the FRP-concrete composite member was carried out to evaluate their applicability as a tunnel reinforcement material, which are based on the results from preliminary numerical studies for identifying the behavioral characteristics of FRP-concrete composite member. Moreover, numerical analysis under the same condition as applied in the loading tests was again conducted for analysis of mechanical behavior of the composite member. As a result of the load test and numerical analysis, it appears that the FRP-concrete composite member is greatly subject to shear movement caused by bending tension acting on the interface between two constituent members.

  • This paper investigates the design equations and the strength behavior of the diaphragm for steel box beams and circular-column connections. The strength of the connection is decided by the strength of the diaphragm and the strength of the beam and the column, because the connection diaphragm supports the concentration forces from the box beam's lower flange. In previous researches, however, the calculation procedure of the diaphragm stress from the indeterminate curved-beam model is to complicated to apply in process of the equation. Moreover, no reasonable design has yet ben made because the diaphragm's effect on the strength of the connection has not ben considered. Therefore, through nonlinear FEM analysis of the connection diaphragm, this study examines the strength behavior of a connection with diaphragm details. In addition, a great difference is confirmed between the theoretical and analytic behaviors. Fi naly, considering the strength of the connection and the rigidity capacity of the diaphragm, the diaphragm design method is proposed.

The Separation Performance of Disc Plate and Frame Type Reverse Osmosis Modules (원판틀형 역삼투 모듈의 투과성능 비교)

  • The disc plate and frame type modules for reverse osmosis were developed using three different types of baffles: linear (Type 1), curved (Type 2) and parallel shapes (Type 3). Separation performance tests were carried out for the modules using NaCl and sucrose solutions under the various concentrations and operating pressures. The permeation flux and solute rejection ratio for Type 3 module were the highest within operating pressure (35bar) and flow rate (6 l/min). The flux improvement ratio of Type 2 or 3 to Type 1 for NaCl solution decreased as operating pressure increased: flux improvement ratios of Type 3 for 1wt% of NaCl solution were about 100 and 10% at 10 and 35bar, respectively. However, the flux improvement ratio for sucrose solutions varied with the operating pressure and concentration. The permeation flux for Type 3 depended on the flow rate linearly, which is higher than that of turbulent flow region in the smooth channel.

Vision-based Real-time Lane Detection and Tracking for Mobile Robots in a Constrained Track Environment

  • As mobile robot applications increase in real life, the need of low cost autonomous driving are gradually increasing. We propose a novel vision-based real-time lane detection and tracking system that supports autonomous driving of mobile robots in constrained tracks which are designed considering indoor driving conditions of mobile robots. Considering the processing of lanes with various shapes and the pre-adjustment of operation parameters, the system structure with multi-operation modes are designed. In parameter tuning mode, thresholds of the color filter is dynamically adjusted based on the geometric property of the lane thickness. And in the unstable input mode of curved tracks and the stable input mode of straight tracks, lane feature pixels are adaptively extracted based on the geometric and temporal characteristics of the lanes and the lane model is fitted using the least-squared method. The track centerline is calculated using lane models and the motion model is simplified and tracked by a linear Kalman filter. In the driving experiments, it was confirmed that even in low-performance robot configurations, real-time processing produces the accurate autonomous driving in the constrained track.

Strengthening of prestressed girder-deck system with partially debonding strand by the use of CFRP or steel plates: Analytical investigation

  • This paper describes an in-depth analysis on flexural strength of a girder-deck system experiencing a strand debonding damage with various strengthening systems, based on finite element software ABAQUS. A detailed finite element analysis (FEA) model was developed and verified against the relevant experimental data performed by other researchers. The proposed analytical model showed a good agreement with experimental data. Based on the verified FE model, over a hundred girder-deck systems were investigated with the consideration of following variables: 1) debonding level, 2) span-to-depth ratio (L/d), 3) strengthening type, 4) strengthening material thickness. Based on the data above, a new detailed analytical model was developed and proposed for estimating residual flexural strength of the strand-debonding damaged girder-deck system with strengthening systems. It was demonstrated that both finite element model and analysis model could be used to predict flexural behaviors for debonding damaged prestressed girder-deck systems. Since the strands are debonding from surrounding concrete over a certain zone over the length of the beam, the increase of strain in strands can be linked with a ratio ψ, which is Lp/c. The analytical model was proposed and developed regarding the ratio ψ. By conducting procedure of calculating ψ, the ψ value varies from 9.3 to 70.1. Multiple nonlinear regression analysis was performed in Software IBM SPSS Statistics 27.0.1 to derive equation of ψ. ψ equation was curved to be an exponential function, and the independent variable (X) is a linear function in terms of three variables of debonding level (λ), span length (L), and amount of strengthening material (As). The coefficient of determinate (R2) for curve fitting in nonlinear regression analysis is 0.8768. The developed analytical model was compared to the ultimate capacities computed by FEA model.

Quantifying Variability of YSOs in the Mid-IR Over Six Years with NEOWISE

  • Variability in Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) can be caused by time-dependent accretion rates, geometric changes in the circumstellar disks, the stochastic hydromagnetic interactions between stellar surfaces and inner disk edges, reconnections within the stellar magnetosphere, and hot/cold spots on stellar surfaces. We uncover ~1400 variables from a sample of ~5300 YSOs in nearby low-mass star-forming regions using mid-IR light curves obtained from the 5.5-years NEOWISE All Sky Survey. The mid-IR variability traces a wide range of dynamical, physical, and geometrical phenomenon. We classify six types of YSO variability based on their light curves: secular variability (Linear, Curved, Periodic) and stochastic variability (Burst, Drop, Irregular). YSOs in earlier evolutionary stages have higher fractions of variables at all types and higher amplitudes for the variability. Along with brightness variability, we also find a diverse range of secular color variations, which can be attributed to a competitive interplay between the variable accretion luminosity of the central source and the variable extinction by material associated with the accretion process. We compare the variability of known FUors/EXors and VeLLOs/LLSs, which represent two extreme ends (burst versus quiescent) of the episodic accretion process; FUors/EXors have a higher fraction of variables (65%) than VeLLOs/LLSs (41%).   • The Yongjang mine is located in Masan City, Gyeongsangnamdo, which consists of a black shale possessing quartzite veins with othercompositions such as gold, silver, and sublimated sulfur. The average width of the veins is $9{\sim}17cm$ and the average degrees of the gold and silver are 3.6 g/t and 113.6 g/t respectively. A regional and a detailed scale electrical resistivity surveys are conducted to determine the existence of the mineralization zones and the linear structures in the study area. In addition, surveys of a several different array methods are conducted such as dipole-dipole array in the surface and borehole-to-surface array, surface-to-borehole array, and dipole-dipole array in the borehole. The method of element division can be applied to the region in which the borehole is curved, inclined or the distance between the electrodes is shorter than that of nodal points, because the coordinate of each electrode cannot be assigned directly to the nodal point if several electrodes are in an element. Yongjang vein is extended longer under the subsurface than on the surface in the images reconstructed from the 3D inversion. Therefore, it is recognized that the 3-D interpretation of the electrical resistivity survey is a very useful method to figure out the existence of strike and extension direction because the mineralization zones and the linear structures are shown in each depth.

  • In this study, we present a decision function of optimal smoothing parameter for baseline correction using Asymmetrically reweighted penalized least squares (arPLS). Baseline correction is very important due to influence on performance of spectral analysis in application of spectroscopy. Baseline is often estimated by parameter selection using visual inspection on analyte spectrum. It is a highly subjective procedure and can be tedious work especially with a large number of data. For these reasons, an objective procedure is necessary to determine optimal parameter value for baseline correction. The proposed function is defined by modeling the median value of possible parameter range as the length and order of the background signal. The median value increases as the length of the signal increases and decreases as the degree of the signal increases. The simulated data produced a total of 112 signals combined for the 7 lengths of the signal, adding analytic signals and linear and quadratic, cubic and 4th order curve baseline respectively. According to the experimental results using simulated data with linear, quadratic, cubic and 4th order curved baseline, and real Raman spectra, we confirmed that the proposed function can be effectively applied to optimal parameter selection for baseline correction using arPLS.

Morphological Characteristics of Baculum in Four Bats (익수류 4종의 음경골 형태에 관한 기초연구)

  • The morphological characteristics of the baculum were compared among Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, Hypsugo alaschanicus, Vespertilio sinensis, and Murina hilgendorfi. Their bacula were located at the distal end but their shapes were differed among species. V. sinensis had the longest baculum (mean=7.27 mm), followed by R. ferrumequinum (mean=5.02 mm), H. alaschanicus (mean=2.60 mm) and M. hilgendorfi (mean=2.15 mm). The baculum of R. ferrumequinum was Y-shaped, with a pointed tip and that of V. sinensis was long and conical. However, the baculum of H. alaschanicus was I-shaped, with the widths of proximal and distal ends larger than that of the shaft. The baculum of M. hilgendorfi was small, and oval shaped. The shaft of the baculum of R. ferrumequinum and H. alaschanicus was linear in shape, whereas that of V. sinensis was curved towards the distal end, and that of M. hilgendorfi was bent upward. The results showed that the baculum morphology differed among these four species. These findings can be utilized as an identification key for these species, and they can be used as baseline data for studying the phyletic relationships of bats.
