This paper reports the study on development and verification of numerical models and analyzes of flow at high speed around structural elements in the shape of a curved pipe (e.g., a fragment of a water slide). Possibility of engineering estimation of wind forces acting on an object in the shape of a helix is presented, using relationships concerning toroidal and cylindrical elements. Determination of useful engineering parameters (such as aerodynamic forces, pressure distribution, and air velocity field) is presented, impossible to obtain from the existing standard EN 1991-1-4 (the so-called wind standard). For this purpose, flow at high speed around a torus and helix, arranged both near planar surface and high above it, was analyzed. Analyzes begin with the flow around a cylinder. This is the simplest object with a circular cross-section and at the same time the most studied in the literature. Based on this model, more complex models are analyzed: first in the shape of half of a torus, next in the shape of a helix.

High temperature and high pressure heavy water flows through the pipes in atomic power plants. The curved parts of pipes are critical parts in that they change the direction of steam flow, and these parts are especially affected by severe wear. Therefore, most pipes in atomic power plants are tested by non-destructive examination by workers who use ultrasonic sensors to measure the wall thickness of pipes. But not only are these pipes located in a very dangerous environment, but the space is also very limited. For the safety of workers, it is necessary to design a device that uses a mobile robot that can inspect curved pipes. This paper presents the design and construction of a small device that can generate the necessary contact forces between ultrasonic sensors and pipe walls in a limited space. And a mobile robot is used in place ortho worker for successful non-destructive examination.

Numerical and experimental studies were performed to examine the characteristics of heat and mass transfer processes for a Micro Heat Pipe(MHP) with a triangular cross-section. Solutions on mass flow rate, pressure variation, and radius of meniscus were obtained using the mathematical model developed by Faghri and Khrustalev. To obtain an increase in capillary limitation, a triangular tube with curved walls was designed and fabricated. The measurement by microscope showed that the radius at corners of the tube was ranging between 0.03-0.05mm. Performance test for MHPs using the triangular tube with curved walls proved a substantial increasement in heat transport limitation, with 4.5W and 2.0W in case of using water and ethanol as a working fluid, respectively. In the previous study by Faghri a limitation of 0.5W was reported for a water MHP with a regular triangular tube.

This is a numerical study on the curved channel type of hydrogen reformer using the commercial code of fluid dynamics. We numerically compared the numerical model in a previous study model and the modelling of a tube type curved channel. In the result of numerical analysis on 4 types of curved channel reformers, the methanol conversion efficiency of type 1~4 were 45.0%, 45.3%, 45.6%, 45.6% respectively, and there was hardly any difference by ${\pm}0.6%$. In light of flow characteristics, the rectangle type tube and the type 2 with $45^{\circ}$ turn showed most uniform flow characteristics and concentration distribution of methanol, and the circular type tube and the type 3 with $90^{\circ}$ turn had most un-uniform flow characteristics and concentration distribution of methanol. We concluded that the design for curved channel reformer has to have rectangle type tube with curve of almost $45^{\circ}$ as in the type of curved pipe with $45^{\circ}$ turn.
The mear field structure of round turbulent jets with initially asymmetric velocity distributions is investigated experimentally. Experiments are carried out using a constant temperature hot-wire anemometry system to measure streamwise velocity in the jets. The measurements are undertaken across the jet at various streamwise stations in a range starting from the jet exit plane and up to a downstream location of twelve diameters. The experimental results include the distributions of mean and instantaneous velocities, vorticity field, turbulence intensity, and the Reynolds shear stresses. The asymmetry of the jet exit plane was obtained by using circular cross-section pipes with a bend upstream of the exit. There pipes used here include a straight pipe, and 90 and 160 degree-bend pipes. Therefore, at the upstream of the upstream of the pipe exit, secondary flow through the bend mean streamwise velocity distribution could be controlled by changing the curvature of pipes. The jets into the atmosphere have two levels of initial velocity skewness in addition to an axisymmetric jet from a straight pipe. In case of the curved pipe, a six diameter-long straight pipe section follows the bend upstream of the exit. The Reynolds number based on the exit bulk velocity is 13,400. The results indicate that the near field structure is considerably modified by the skewness of an initial mean velocity distribution. As the skewness increases, the decay rate of mean velocity at the centerline also increases.

This study presents an aerodynamic design and an experimental performance test of a turbo air compressor consisted of mixed-flow impeller and curved diffuser for the PEM fuel cell vehicle application. Many studies compare the efficiency, cost or noise level of high-pressure and low-pressure operation of PEM fuel cell systems. Pressure ratio 2.2:1 is considered as design target The goal of compressor design is to enlarge the flow margin of compressor from surge to choke mass flow rate to cover the operational envelope of FCV. Large-scale rig test is performed to evaluate the compressor performance and to compare the effects of compressor exit pipe volume to stall or surge characteristics. The results show that the mixed-flow compressor designed has large flow margin, and the flow margin of compressor configuration with small exit volume is larger than that with large exit volume.

Hot-wire measurement of the longitudinal and radial velocity components and Reynolds stresses are reported for developing turbulent flow in a strongly curved 180 deg. pipe and its tangents. Slanted wire is rotated to 6 directions and the voltage outputs of them are combined to obtain the mean velocities and Reynolds stresses. Significant double maxima in the longitudinal velocity component appear in the bend. V-profiles reveal the development of a strong secondary flow. This secondary flow is induced by the transverse pressure gradient set up between the outer(r$\sub$o/) and inner(r$\sub$i/) wall region of the bend. Another second cross-stream flow develops after .theta.=135 deg. and its direction is opposed to that of main second flow.

A marine SCR System is emerging as an alternative to comply with NOx Tier III Emission standards, a restriction on greenhouse gas from vessels implemented by the International Maritime Organization. The system is greatly affected by the uniformity of the fluid flowing into the catalyst, so the performance of the catalyst of an SCR system needs to be guaranteed. This study conducted research on a mixed evaporator of an SCR system, which is one of the factors affecting the uniformity of the fluid. When the angle of the mixed evaporator is set to $90^{\circ}$, the fluid uniformity is at its highest at 83%, under the condition that the length of the mixed evaporator be 3.5 D. When the length was 3.5 D and less, the fluid uniformity had a tendency to improve relative to the case without a bent pipe. However, a longer mixed evaporator results in a more perfect liquidity development in the pipe with a liquidity distribution similar to the case where no curved pipe is formed in front of the catalyst. A lower angle for the mixed evaporator results in a lower flow uniformity, and a longer length of the mixed evaporator results in a lower difference in the flow uniformity caused by the angle. The flow uniformity can be improved by 6% with a mixed evaporator, which confirmed that all factors applied to an SCR system have a close relationship with the efficiency.
This study reports the analysis of the pressure drop characteristics for the air-particle flow in powder transport piping system. The pressure drop characteristics of air-particle flow in piping system is not well understood due to the complexity of particles motion mechanism. Particles or powders suspended in air flow cause the increase of the pressure drop and affect directly the transportation efficiency. In this study, the pressure drop in powder transport piping system with straight and curved pipes is analyzed for the interactions of air flow and particle motion. The total pressure drop increases with increasing of the pipe length, the mixture ratio, and the friction factor of particles due to the increasing friction loss by air and particles in a coal piping system. For the coal powders of $74{\mu}m$ size and powder-to-air mass mixture ratio of 0.667, the total pressure drop by the consideration of powders and air flow is $30\%$ higher than that of air flow only.
