  • Two-level fractional factorial designs are widely used when many factors are considered. When two-level fractional factorial designs are used, some effects are confounded with each other. To break the confounding between effects, we can use fractional factorial designs, called fold-over designs, in which certain signs in the design generators are switched. In this paper, optimal fold-over designs with four-level quantitative and two-level factors are presented for (1) the initial designs without curvature effect and (2) those with curvature effect. Optimal fold-over design tables are provided for 8-run, 16-run, and 32-run experiments.

  • This paper presents effects of anisotropy and curvature on free vibration characteristics of cross-ply laminated composite cylindrical shallow shells. Shallow shells have been considered for different lamination thickness, radius of curvature and elasticity ratio. First, kinematic relations of strains and deformation have been showed. Then, using Hamilton's principle, governing differential equations have been obtained for a general curved shell. In the next step, stress-strain relation for laminated, cross-ply composite shells has been given. By using some simplifications and assuming Fourier series as a displacement field, differential equations are solved by matrix algebra for shallow shells. The results obtained by this solution have been given tables and graphs. The comparisons made with the literature and finite element program (ANSYS).

  • This paper studies an effect of vibration on twisted string actuation inside conduit at high curvature angles. In our previous work. we have mentioned that twisted string actuators can be used to transmit power even at significant curvature angles of the conduit. However, several undesirable effects, namely pull-back, hysteresis, and chattering, were present during actuation due to friction between strings and the internal sheath of the conduit. This paper reports the results of experimental study on effects of vibration on twisted string actuation inside curved conduits. We have demonstrated that applying vibration generated near natural frequency of the system during the stages of twisting and untwisting cycles helped reduce pull-back and hysteresis and increase string contraction. In case when sheath was deflected by $180^{\circ}$ under a constant load of 3 kg, we were able to achieve over 40% decrease in pull-back and 30% decrease in hysteresis, compared with no vibration case.

  • Currently, carbon-fiber reinforced plastics(CFRP) are widely used in both space and civil aircraft due to their superior stiffness and strength to weight ratios compared to conventional metallic materials. This paper is to study the effects of curvature and stacking sequence on the penetration characteristics of composite laminated shell. And were performed to investigate the penetration characteristics of composite laminated shells by the oblique impact. They are stacked to [0$_3$/90$_3$]s, [90$_3$/0$_3$]s and [0$_2$/90$_3$/0]s, [90$_2$/0$_3$/90]s their interlaminar number two and fore. They are manufactured to varied curvature radius (R=100, 150, 200mm and $\infty$). When the specimen is subjected to transverse impact by a steel ball, the velocity of the steel ball was measured both before and after impact by determining the time for it to pass two ballistics-screen sensor located a known distance apart. In general, the critical penetration energy interface decrease and slope angle on the impact surface increased. [0$_3$/90$_3$]s and [0$_2$/90$_3$]s specimens higher than [90$_3$/0$_3$]s and [90$_2$/0$_3$/90]s specimens.

  • Background: Breathing is the essential step of Pilates exercise and can be used to activate core muscles. Although the effects of breathing exercise on pain, breathing muscles, and cervical posture have been extensively studied, little is known about the impact of Pilates breathing on spinal posture and alignment. Purpose: To determine the effect of 3D-Pilates breathing exercise on spinal curvature and alignment of healthy adults during corrected to normal alignment. Design: One group pre-post test design Methods: Eighteen participants were given a 3D-pilates breathing exercise twice a week (20 minutes per session) for three weeks and warmed up for 10 minutes before each exercise session. To examine spinal curvature and alignment of each subject, this study used radiation free rasterstereography (Formetric III, Germany). Paired t-test and Wilcoxon signed rank test were performed to determine the difference between pre and post exercise. Results: There were statistically significant differences in height (p<.001), kyphosis angle (p<.05), trunk imbalance (p<.05), kyphotic apex (p<.01), cervical fleche (p<.05), pelvic tilt (p<.01), and lateral deviation (p<.05) between before and after 3D Pilates breathing exercise. However, there was no significant difference in lordosis angle. Conclusions: The study results indicated that three week 3D-pilates breathing exercise program could be presented as an effective rehabilitation method for improving spinal curvature and alignment.

  • An experimental study is made of turbulent shear flows in a nearly two-dimensional 90.deg. curved duct by using the hot-wire anemometer. The Reynolds normal and shear stresses, triple velocity products, integral length scales, Taylor micro length scales and dissipation length scales are measured and analyzed. For a positive shear at the inlet, the afore-mentioned turbulence quantities are all suppressed. However, when the inlet shear flow is negative, they are augmented, i.e., the convex curvature suppresses the turbulence whereas the concave curvature augments it. It is found that the curvature effects are rather sensitive to the triple velocity products than the Reynolds stresses. The evolution of turbulence under the curvature with the different shear conditions is well described by the modified curvature parameter S' and the non-dimensional development time ${\tau}$.'

  • In this paper, we have analyzed the curvature effects of the finite FSS(frequency selective surface) using the 3-D method of moment using the BiCGSTab algorithm as an iterative method. To validate the analysis method in this paper, we compared the RCS(radar cross section) of PEC(perfect electric conductor) sphere with theoretical results and it shows well agreements. The tripole slot FSSs which have many application in military were selected for the investigation of curvature effect and RCS as a frequency characteristics were observed with the variation of the curvature rate. Simulation results shows that curvature effect can significant effect the passband frequency and bandwidth of FSS. We suggest that the curvature effect must be considered at the stage of design FSS application like FSS radome.

  • Conformity between the femoral component and tibial insert within the knee replacement may be measured in frontal or sagittal view, and shows differences in the curvature radius of the femoral component depending on the flexion angle, i.e., curvature radius has a complex effect on contact stress. Therefore, it is essential to confirm how the curvature radius effects contact stress, and provide an important variable to reduce contact stress. This study correlated contact stress with curvature radius measured in frontal and the sagittal views and confirmed the effect of curvature radius for assessment of the Newly Designed Unicompartment Knee Replacement (NDUKR). Finite element models were constructed for NDUKR and $Zimmer^{(R)}$ Unicompartment High Flex Knee Replacement system (ZUKR), incorporating the curvature radius as measured in either frontal or sagittal view. The femoral component had 1200N of compressive load applied approximately 1.65xbody weight. Contact stress was predicted at flexion angles $0^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$, $90^{\circ}C$ and $120^{\circ}C$, for NDUKR: 42, 47.7, 47.7, 51.2, and 54.1 MPa, and ZUKR: 41.2, 49.5, 53.2, 54.3, and 57.4 MPa, respectively. Correlation analysis showed the influence of curvature radius measured from the sagittal view was larger than for frontal view.

  • When the integration density and operating frequency increase in the electronic circuits, it is important to improve the signal transmission characteristics. In this paper, the signal transmission characteristics of the printed circuit boards are analyzed with the curvature of the pads. From the simulation results, signal transmission characteristics are improved when pad curvature increases. Pad curvature more effects on signal transmission characteristics when the thickness of the transmission line and the length of the transmission decrease.
