  • A current transformer (CT) is a type of sensor that consists of a combination of electric and magnetic circuits, and it measures large ac currents. When a large amount of current flows into the primary winding, the alternating magnetic flux in the iron core induces an electromotive force in the secondary winding. The characteristics of a CT are determined by the iron core design because the iron core is saturated above a certain magnetic flux density. In particular, when a large current, such as a current surge, is input into a CT, the iron core becomes saturated and the induced electromotive force in the secondary winding fluctuates severely. Under these conditions, the CT no longer functions as a sensor. In this study, the characteristics of the secondary winding were investigated using the time-difference finite element method when a current surge was provided as an input. The CT was modeled as a two-dimensional analysis object using constraints, and the saturation characteristics of the iron core were evaluated using the Newton-Rhapson method. The results of the calculation were compared with the experimental data. The results of this study will prove useful in the designs of the iron core and the windings of CTs.

  • We have developed an evaluation technique for phase displacement of current transformer (CT) comparator by using the precise standard capacitors and resistors. By applying this technique for equivalent circuit of CT comparator evaluation system, we can obtain the calculated and measured phase displacement in the CT comparator. Thus we can evaluate phase displacement of CT comparator by comparing the calculated and measured phase displacement. The method was applied to CT comparator under test with the phase displacement ranges of $0{\sim}{\pm}7.5$ crad. Finally we have compared the phase displacement of the CT comparator under test theoretically obtained in this method with the specification.

  • This thesis is the result of conducting an analysis to find the solution to the phenomenon of power stoppage due to the disconnection of a CT (Current Transformer) because of vibration. The CT which measures the most essential current is used in power industries as part of a generator protection relay. When it comes to the bottom plate of a CT, nonconductor; such as bakelite and laminates; these material elements should be used because it is impossible to utilize the conductor when measuring the current of a generator which carries a high current if you use other materials. These nonconductor's material properties are irregular and interpretation errors often occur because the weight is light. In addition, since the change of dynamic characteristics which are related to the temperature often occur, it is important to match the real situation by considering an error of interpretation rather than selecting the quality of the material. Lastly, the conclusion that the study drew is that it is possible to avoid the resonance by utilizing three changes to the components to solve the problem concerning the high vibration which is caused by non-conductive objects. These changes are the most crucial points in this thesis: First, material changes to the Plate. Second, weight changes to the Coil. Third, thickness changes to the Plate.

  • The conventional method to deal with current transformer (CT) Saturation is over dimensioning of the core so that CTs can carry up to 20 times the rated current without exceeding 10% ratio correction. However, this not only reduces the sensitivity of relays as some errors may still be present in the secondary current when a severe fault occurs, but also increases the CT size. This paper presents an algorithm for compensating the distorted secondary current of iron-cored CTs under CT saturation using the magnetization (flux-current : .lambda.-i) curve and its performance is examined for fault currents encountered on a typical 345[kV] Korean transmission system, under a variety of different system and fault conditions. In addition, the results of hardware implementation of the algorithm using a TMS320C10 digital signal processor are also presented. The proposed algorithm can improve the sensitivity of relays to low level internal faults, maximize the stability of relays for external faults, and reduce the required CT core cross-section significantly. • In design of current transformer, equivalent circuit parameters is obtained by electromagnetic analysis and used circuit simulation. Precise core secton area and turns of coil can be determined by circuit analysis. Therefore exact design of current transformer is possible by field and circuit analysis.

  • A current differential relay has been used for transmission line protection. The relay may maloperate in the case of a failure of the secondary circuit of a current transformer (CT) because the differential current is produced. This paper presents an algorithm to detect a failure of a CT using the zero-sequence current. If the magnitude of the zero-sequence current is the same as the magnitude of the current of the other healthy phases, a failure of a CT is detected and then the blocking signal is activated. The proposed algorithm prohibit the maloperation of a differential relay in the case of a CT failure and thus increase the security of the relay.

  • This paper describes the design, evaluation and implementation of a compensating algorithm for an iron-cored measurement current transformer (CT) that removes the effects of the hysteresis characteristics of the iron-core. The exciting current resulting from the hysteresis characteristics of the core causes an error of the CT. The proposed algorithm decomposes the exciting current into the core loss current and the magnetizing current and each of them is estimated. The core loss current is calculated from the secondary voltage and the voltage-core loss current curve. The core flux linkage is calculated and then inserted into the flux-magnetizing current curve to estimate the magnetizing current. The exciting current at every sampling interval is obtained by summing the core loss and magnetizing currents and then added to the measured current to obtain the correct secondary current. The voltage-core loss current curve and flux-magnetizing current curves, which are different from the conventional curves, are derived in this paper. The performance of the proposed algorithm is validated under various conditions using EMTP generated data. The experimental test results of an iron-core type electronic CT, which consists of the iron-core and the compensation board, are also included. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm can improve the accuracy of the measurement CT significantly, and thus reduce the size and the cost of the CT.

  • The resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) are very attractive devices for the electric power network. But they have some serious problems when the YBCO thin films were used for the current limiting materials due to the in homogeneities caused by manufacturing process. When the YBCO films have some inhomogeneities, simultaneous quenches are difficult to achieve when the fault current limiting units are connected in series for increasing operating voltage ratings. Magnetic field application is one of the prospective way of inducing simultaneous quenches far the series-connected resistive FCL components. Magnetic field was typically generated by the fault current thorough a coil, which is connected to components of the fault current limiter in series, leaving the problem, which provides significant inductance to the power line and suppresses critical current density of the superconducting components. In this article we investigated the possible application of the protective current transformer (p-CT), which is available current source to the magnetic coil. This system inductively coupled to the circuit, therefore, remarkably reducing impedance to the circuit. The current by the protective current transformer was directly fed to the coil, generating magnetic field large enough to reduce critical current density of the components. This successfully induced simultaneous quenches of the series-connected resistive FCL components.

  • A phasor estimation algorithm based on the least square curve fitting technique for the distorted secondary current due to current transformer (CT) saturation is proposed. The mathematical form of the secondary current during CT saturation is represented as the scaled primary current with magnetizing current. The information on the scaled primary current is estimated using the least square technique, with the measured secondary current in the saturated section. The proposed method can estimate the phasor of a fundamental frequency component during the saturated period. The performance of the algorithm is validated under various fault and CT conditions using a C400 CT model. A series of performance evaluations shows that the proposed phasor estimation algorithm can estimate the phasor of the fundamental frequency component with high accuracy, regardless of fault conditions and CT characteristics.
