  • In this paper, a sensorless control scheme for a three-phase bi-directional voltage-type PWM rectifier in wind power generation system that operates without the input AC voltage sensors (generator side) is described. The basic principles and classification of the PWM rectifier are analyzed, and then the three-phase mathematical model of the input AC voltage sensorless PWM rectifier control system is established. The proposed scheme has been developed in order to lower the cost of the three-phase PWM rectifier but still achieve excellent output voltage regulation, limited current harmonic content, and unity input power factor.

  • Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have been under development for a variety of power generation applications. Power system sizes considered range from small watt-size units (e.g., 50-W portable devices) to very large multi-megawatt systems (e.g., 500-MW base load power plants). Because of the reversibility of its operation, the SOFC has also been developed to operate under reverse or electrolysis mode for hydrogen production from steam (In this case, the cell is referred to as solid oxide electrolysis cell or SOEC.). Potential applications for the SOEC include on-site and large-scale hydrogen production. One critical requirement for practical uses of these systems is long-term performance stability under specified operating conditions. Intrinsic material properties and operating environments can have significant effects on cell performance stability, thus performance degradation rate. This paper discusses potential applications of the SOFC/SOEC, technological status and current research and development (R&D) direction, and certain aspects of long-term performance degradation in the operation of SOFCs/SOECs for power generation/hydrogen production.

  • In the PV (Photovoltaic) power system, a junction box collects the DC voltage generated from the PV module and transfers it to the PCS (power conditioning system). The junction box prevents damage caused by the voltage difference between the serially connected PV modules and provides convenience while repairing or inspecting the PV array. In addition, the junction box uses the diode to protect modules from the inverse current when the PV power system and electric power system are connected for use. However, by using the reverse blocking diode, heat is generated within the junction box while generating electric power, which decreases the generating efficiency, and causes short circuit and electric leakage. In this research, based on the purpose of improving the performance of the PV module by decreasing the heat generation within the junction box, a junction box with a built-in bypass circuit was designed/manufactured so that a certain capacity of current generated from the PV module does not run through the reverse blocking diode. The manufactured junction box was used to compare the electric power and heating power generated when the circuit was in the bypass/non-bypass modes. It was confirmed that the electric power loss and heat generation indicated a decrease when the circuit was in the bypass mode.

  • Solar power generation systems require maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control to operate PV panels at their maximum power point (MPP). Most conventional MPPT algorithms are based on the slope-tracking concept. A typical slope-tracking method is the perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm. The P&O algorithm measures the current and voltage of a PV panel to find the operating point of the voltage at which the calculated power is maximized. However, the measurement error of the sensor causes irregularity in the calculation of the generated power and voltage control. This irregularity leads to the problem of not finding the correct MPP operating point. In this work, the power output of a PV panel based on the P&O algorithm is simulated by considering the insolation profiles from typical clear and cloudy weather conditions and the errors of current and voltage sensors. Simulation analysis suggests the optimal control period and perturbation voltage of MPPT to maximize its target efficiency under real weather conditions with sensor tolerance.

  • An economic feasibility study is performed for the wind power generation with the examination of the wind speed and its distribution at Daekwanryung at which a wind fm is under construction. In this analysis, the distribution of wind speed is the key issue. The wind distribution which is usually expressed in terms of Weibull distribution with shape factor and scale factor needs to be reexamined to find the proper values of them according to the empirical wind speed data. After this kind of analysis is done, annual power generation of wind is calculated. Due to the lack of cost information, we applied EWEA data instead or the actual information from the site. The result would be of use to determine the 'reference price' of wind power under the current system of 'compensating subsidy for renewable power generation'.

  • Today, photovoltaic power generation mostly uses Si crystalline solar cell modules. The most vulnerable part of the Si solar cell module is that the power generation decreases due to the temperature rise. But, it is widely used because of low installation cost. In the solar market, where Si crystalline solar cell modules are widely used. The CPV (Concentrated Photovoltaic) module appeared in the solar market. The CPV module reduces the manufacturing cost of the solar cell by using non-Si in the solar cell. Also, there is an advantage that a rise in temperature does not cause a drop in power generation. But this requires high technology to install and has a disadvantage that the initial installation cost is expensive compared to normal Si solar cell module. So that we built a testbed to see these characteristics. The testbed was used to measure the amount of power generation in a long-term outdoor environment and compared with the general Si solar cell module.

  • This paper presents a high-efficiency CMOS PWM DC-DC buck converter. It generates a constant output voltage(1-2.8V), from an input voltage(3.4-3.9V). Inductor-based type is chosen and inductor current is controlled with PWM operation. The designed circuit consists of power switch, Pulse Width Generation, Buffer, Zero Current Sensing, Current Sensing Circuit, Clock & Ramp generation, V-I Converter, Soft Start, Compensator and Modulator. Switching Frequency is 1MHz, It operates in CCM when the load current is more than 40mA, and the maximum efficiency is 98.71% at 100mA. Output voltage ripple is 0.98mV(input voltage:3.5V, output voltage:2.5V). The performance of the designed circuit has been verified through extensive simulation using a CMOS $0.18{\mu}m$ technology.

  • The monitoring system is an absolutely required system for improving a performance to consider the situation for the hybrid generation of the photovoltaic (PV) and wind power (WP) energy experimental research complex. This system is to monitor with the railroad switching point heating system using LabVIEW to the hybrid generation of the PV and WP. The monitoring system of this paper is a program monitoring the hour, day and total of the voltage and current that made from the hybrid generation of PV and WP. In experiment, we acquired the power data according to time at the day of PV and WP. We have confirmed the possibility of the real time monitoring system using LabVIEW with the railroad switching point heating system as the hybrid generation of the PV and WP.

  • We propose portable equipment that monitors current and voltage of high-potential power transmission lines. In the equipment, a current and voltage sensor are attached to an insulator that supports a power transmission line: A clamped to the power line and the detected current signal is transmitted to the ground station by a wireless optical link using transmission line is detected by a high resistance element, zinc oxide (ZnO). That acts as a potential divider between the power line and ground. We make an experimental device for 66kV power line and demonstrate that it can monitor currents proposed equipment is small-sized, light, and inexpensive in comparison with the conventional CT (current transformer) and PT (potential transformer) since it does not require high potential insulators and magnetic cores, further, the equipment is easily installed owing to its small size and its simple structure.

  • The Korean electric power supply plan was prepared by greatly enhancing the environmental and safety with considering the economical efficiency of the electric equipment, the impact on the environment and the public safety. As a result, the fossil energy-based power generation sector is accelerating the paradigm shift to eco-friendly energy such as solar power and wind. Also the solar power industry is expected to grow into a super large-sized industry by converging the energy storage and electric vehicle industry. Generally, a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) is used to calculate the power generation cost for different generation power generation efficiency, operating cost, and life span. In this paper, we have studied the future research and development direction of photovoltaic technology development for the era of massive utilization of photovoltaic solar power, and have studied the LCOE of major countries including China, USA, Germany, Japan and Korea. Finally we have reviewed USA and Japan research programs to reduce the LCOE.
