Analysis is performed to determine the optimal lengths or cross-sectional areas of refrigerator-cooled current leads that can be applied to the conduction-cooled superconducting systems. The binary current lead is composed of the series combination of a normal metal at the upper(warm) part and a high $T_c$ superconductor(HTS) at the lower(cold) part. The heat conduction toward the cold end of HTS part constitutes a major refrigeration load. In addition, the joint between the parts should be cooled by a refrigerator in order to reduce the load at the low end and maintain the HTS part in a superconducting state. The sum of the work inputs required for the two refrigeration loads needs to be minimized for an optimal operation. In this design, three simple models that depict the refrigeration performance as functions of cooling temperature are developed based on some of the existing refrigerators. By solving one-dimensional conduction equation that take into account the temperature-dependent properties of the materials, the refrigeration works are numerically calculated for various values of the joint temperature and the sizes of two parts. The results show that for given size of HTS, there exist the optimal values for the joint temperature and the size of the normal metal. It is also found that the refrigeration work decreases as the length of HTS increases and that the optimal size of normal metal is quite independent of the size of HTS. For a given length of HTS, there is an optimal cross-sectional area and it increases as the length increases. The dependence of the optimal sizes on the refrigerator models employed are presented for 1kA leads.
Degree-days are practically used as a tool to estimate energy consumption for heating and cooling. Degree-days are calculated by summing differences of balance point temperature and outside temperature for the analyzed period. Determining balance point temperature is a key point in calculating accurate degree-days. However, ASHRAE standards are used for balance point temperature in Korea because balance point temperature considering climate conditions and building thermal performance is not proposed in Korea. This study proposes the process to generate balance point temperature for heating degree-days considering Korean climate and building conditions. Also, a new balance point temperature for three regions in Korea will be suggested in this study. Balance point temperature of Seoul is approximately $15.0^{\circ}C$, lower than the current standard of $18.3^{\circ}C$. Balance point temperature of Seoul considering climate conditions and building performance can be different from the ASHRAE suggested value ($18.3^{\circ}C$). Results revealed the current standard for balance point temperature should be changed considering climate and building conditions in Korea.
An analysis model considered the manufacturing factors and the pellet size has been developed in order to predict the performance characteristics of thermoelectric modules as generators. Since the electrical internal resistance has a significant role in the performance of thermoelectric modules, the variations of electrical internal resistance with operating temperature are experimentally measured. The modified electrical internal resistance calculated from an experimental correlation is applied to the analysis model. To verify the modified analysis model, the output voltage, output current and output power are compared with experimental results for the operating temperature conditions of $T_h=85^{\circ}C$ and ${\Delta}T=40^{\circ}C$. The modified analysis shows a good agreement with the experimental results in terms of the output voltage, current, and power.

R-410a and R-407c which have the best potential among R-22 alternatives were tested as drop-in refrigerants against a set of R-22 baseline tests. The performance evaluations were carried out in a psychometric calorimeter test facility using the residential spilt type air conditioner under the ARI rating conditions. Except the lubricant and hand-operated expansion valve, the other parts of the air conditioner were the same with the commercial system. Performance characteristics were measured; compressor power, capacity, VCR, mass flow rate and COP. The tests showed that R-407c can be directly charged into the current refrigeration system because its vapor pressure and other thermochemical properties are similar to those of R-22. However, it is required to change the volume flow rate of compressor in order to achieve the volumetric capacity of R-22. This results from its relatively small VCR and capacity. Meanwhile, R-410a has vapor pressure values too high to be substituted for the current system and this resulted relatively low COP of R-410a compared to that of R-22.
This paper presents and analyzes the effects of on-grid electricity cost, fuel price and initial capital cost of a CHP system, on the optimum DG and AC capacity and NPV, by using the ORNL CHP Capacity Optimizer, which was applied to a library in a university. By considering the current domestic energy cost and initial capital cost, it is shown that the installation and operation of the CHP system is not economical. However, with the current domestic CHP installation cost and fuel price, the NPV achieved by the installation of CHP system is greater when the on-grid electricity price is a factor of ${\times}1.5$ the present value. Regarding the initial capital cost of the CHP system, the reduction of the DG cost is much more economical than that of the AC cost, with respect to NPV. Electricity cost and fuel price have opposite effects on NPV, and NPV is more sensitive to an increase of the electricity cost than an increase of the fuel price.
