This study was designed to evaluate antioxidant activity of Curcuma longa L. leaves treated by ultra high pressure extraction. Curcuma longa L. leaves was subjected to 5,000 bar for 5 and 15 min at $25^{\circ}C$ The highest phenolics and flavonoids content was observed in the treatment of high pressure extraction for 15 min ($308.28{\mu}g/mg$, $124.33{\mu}g/mg$). The DPPH scavenging activity was 82.34% at $1.0mg/m{\ell}$ of Curcuma longa L. leaves treated by ultra high pressure process for 15 min. The highest SOD-like acitivity of Curcuma longa L. leaves ($1.0mg/m{\ell}$) was observed at ultra high pressure extraction for 15 min (67.54%). The high pressure extraction significantly increased the contents of phenolics and flavonoids and also enhanced the antioxidant activity. These results provide useful information for enhancing biological properties of Curcuma longa L. leaves.

Curcuma longa is a plant belonging to the genus Curcuma and is distributed across various Asian regions. This plant is widely known for its rhizomes, which possess a variety of pharmacological properties. However, although the leaves and stems of this plant also contain several health-promoting secondary metabolites, very few studies have characterized these compounds. Therefore, our study sought to quantify the secondary metabolites from the leaves and stems of Curcuma longa L. (LSCL) using liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Our LC-ESI-MS analyses detected twenty-one phenolic compounds in the LSCL, among which fifteen compounds were detected via HPLC analysis. Four compounds, namely vanillic acid (0.129 mg/g), p-coumaric acid (0.431 mg/g), 4-methylcatechol (0.199 mg/g), and afzelin (0.074 mg/g) were then quantified. These findings suggest that LSCL is rich in secondary metabolites and holds potential as a valuable resource for the development of functional and nutritional supplements in the future.

We investigated the optimal cultivation system and dry processing method of rhizomes from Curcuma longa L. in Suncheon, the southern area of Korea. The experimental results are summarized as followings. Curcma longa rhizomes were transplanted on Apr. 30th, May 10th, and May 20th. The plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves and yield were highest in transplanted on May 10th. The fresh rhizome weight of Curcma longa was the heaviest in November 20 and the optimal dry temperature was $40^{\circ}C$. In sensory evaluations, there were significant differences among the Curcuma longa pills in terms of flavor, color, color and texture and overall acceptability, and honey added groups received significantly higher scores than the other groups.
Cosmetic activities of the leaves of Curcuma longa L. were compared according to different drying methods, to expand the use of the by-products of Curcuma longa L. The highest extraction yield of 29.4% was obtained from vacuum drying process (VD), whose value was very close to 29.2% from freeze drying process (FD). Relatively lower extraction yield were observed as 24.5% and 25.3% from the raw leaf (RL) as control and hot air drying process (HD). The cytotoxicity was observed lower FD and VD than RL and HD. It shows that cytotoxicity was closely related to cosmetic activities such as tyrosinase and melanin inhibition activities by showing much better cosmetic activities of the extracts from both FD and VD than those from the RL and HD. It was interesting that was differences of the cosmetic activities and cytotoxicity between FD and VD, which implies that VD method should be a more efficient process than FD method in terms of drying time and operation costs: 6 hours vs 24 hours and 3-5 times higher extraction costs in drying. It was observed that VD is more excellent dry method than others. This result could be utilized to effectively dry other soft plant biomass.
The epidermal structure and development of stomata in four taxa of Zingiberaceae viz: Aframomum melegueta K. Schum, Aframomum sceptrum K. Schum, Curcuma longa L. and Zingiber officinale Rosc. have been investigated. Unicellular, eglandular trichomes are observed on the epidermis of A. sceptrum and Z. officienal. Anomocytic stomata with agenous ontogeny, paracitic stomata with eumesogenous ontogeny and tetracytic stomata with mesoperigenous ontogency are recorded in Z. officinale, Aframomum species and C. longa respectively. Stomata of Z. officinale are the smallest in size (20.6$\times$14.3$\times$10.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) while those of C. longa are the largest (42.5$\times$31.5$\times$20.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). These two taxa also recorded the highest (43.7/mm2) and lowest (28.6/mm2) stomatal frequency respectively which suggests a linear regression of frequency on size.

An in vitro and in vivo studies were conducted to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of certain botanicals viz., rhizomes of turmeric (Curcuma longa) and leaves of amla (Phyllanthus emblica), asparagus (Asparagus racemosus), bael (Aegle marmelos), boerhavia (Boerhavia diffusa), garlic (Allium sativum) and basil (Oscimum basicilum) against bacterial pathogens viz., Staphylococcus sp., Bacillus sp. and Klebsiella cloacae, of silkworm, Bombyx mori. Asparagus and basil, amla and boerhavia, basil and bael at concentration of 20, 000 ppm showed higher antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus sp., Bacillus sp., K. cloacae respectively, both in vitro and in vivo studies.
