  • The Purpose of this study is to find the effects of the portfolio assessment on elementary students' scientific knowledge, inquiry process skill, scientific attitudes in the teaching of science. And finally the parents' response to the portfolio assessment is also investigated. In order to reach the goal of this study, the investigator developed the evaluation instrument such as an experimental report and a cumulative observation sheet for the 4th-grade Unit-1 'Light Propagation' and Unit-3 'Separating Mixtures', and then these were administered to 42 4th-grade elementary students in Inchon. Based upon the findings and within the limitations of this study, several conclusions can be drawn regarding the problems investigated. First, as the portfolio assessment offers enough information about individual student's performance, it has a highly positive effect on evaluating the students' scientific knowledges. It can also make possible to grasp the several aspects of the student's progress. Second, the portfolio assessment can be implemented without giving students any psychological pressure from testing itself. Therefore, the portfolio assessment is an effective means of appraising inquiry process skills. Third, the portfolio assessment is effective to evaluate the students' attitude toward science by means of individual records which include such aspects that is hardly found by the teacher who teaches science in the class. Fourth, as most parents showed a positive response to this portfolio assessment, it is considered to be effective method of appraising the result of teaching science at elementary school. Accordingly, this study demonstrated that the portfolio assessment is an effective method that can assess students' scientific knowledges, inquiry process skills, and scientific attitudes gained from science teaching-learning. Therefore, it is necessary to implement the portfolio assessment to other grade students as well in the following study where teacher may give more encouragements and suggestions to sti dents for the better learning motives. Also teachers should suggest more definite evaluation criteria to students so that they may improve the students' self and peer evaluation skills.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify the effect of dairy products, milk and yogurt on osteoporosis incidence among Korean postmenopausal women using prospective cohort data. MATERIALS/METHODS: Between 2001 and 2003, 10,038 participants were recruited in rural and urban areas for a baseline examination of a community-based cohort study. Of those, 1,573 postmenopausal women (aged 40-69 years at baseline) were eligible for the present study. Intakes of dairy products, milk, and yogurt were assessed using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. The speed of sound at the radius and tibia were measured using a quantitative ultrasound device and osteoporosis was defined based on the WHO criteria (T-score ${\leq}-2.5$). RESULTS: During the 4-years follow-up study, the cumulative incidence of osteoporosis was 18.4% (273 cases) in the radius and 33.6% (407 cases) in the tibia. The subjects with higher frequency of dairy product consumption showed a decreased risk of radius osteoporosis after adjusting for potential confounders [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.51, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.33-0.80 for >1 time/day vs. non consumer; P for trend = 0.0027]. Similarly, high frequency of milk and yogurt consumption had a protective effect on radius osteoporosis risk [milk: HR = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.42-0.87 for > 5-6 times/week vs. non consumer (P for trend = 0.0130), yogurt: HR = 0.51, 95% CI: 0.30-0.85 for > 5-6 times/week vs. non consumer (P for trend = 0.0167)]. However, high dairy products consumption was not related with tibia osteoporosis. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that daily intake of dairy products could potentially reduce radius osteoporosis incidence among Korean postmenopausal women.

  • Objective : We conducted a retrospective cohort study to elucidate the natural course of unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs) at a single institution. Methods : Data from patients diagnosed with UIA from March 2000 to May 2008 at our hospital were subjected to a retrospective analysis. The cumulative and annual aneurysm rupture rates were calculated. Additionally, risk factors associated with aneurysmal rupture were identified. Results : A total of 1339 aneurysms in 1006 patients met the inclusion criteria. During the follow-up period, 685 aneurysms were treated before rupture via either an open surgical or endovascular procedure. Six hundred fifty-four UIAs were identified and not repaired during the follow-up period. The mean UIA size was $4.5{\pm}3.2mm$, and 86.5% of the total UIAs had a largest dimension <7 mm. Among these UIAs, 18 ruptured at a median of 1.6 years (range : 27 days to 9.8 years) after day 0. The annual rupture risk during a 9-year follow-up was 1.00%. A multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis revealed that the aneurysm size and a history of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) were statistically significant risk factors for rupture. For an aneurysms smaller than 7 mm in the absence of a history of SAH, the annual rupture risk was 0.79%. Conclusion : In our study, the annual rupture risk for UIAs smaller than 7 mm in the absence of a history of SAH was higher than that of Western populations but similar to that of the Japanese population.

  • The development of Top-Mounted In-Core Instrumentation(TM-ICI) is an ongoing project to reduce the risk due to severe accidents by inserting the instrumentation into a reactor closure head instead of a reactor bottom head. As part of this project, environmental fatigue analyses for TM-ICI nozzle have been performed using two methods of NUREG/CR-6909 and Code Case N-761. TM-ICI nozzle is subjected to transient loads for level A, level B and test conditions that should be evaluated for a fatigue analysis. It is found that a cumulative usage factor considering reactor coolant environment for TM-ICI nozzle is evaluated as less than 1, which is ASME Code allowable criteria of a fatigue analysis.

  • Background: The difference in prognosis of adult and childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) can be attributed largely to variation in cytogenetic abnormalities with age groups. Cytogenetic analysis in acute leukemia is now routinely used to assist patient management, particularly in terms of diagnosis, disease monitoring, prognosis and risk stratification. Knowing about cytogenetic profile at the time of diagnosis is important in order to take critical decisions in management of the patients. Aim and Objectives: To determine the frequency of cytogenetic abnormalities in Pakistani adult patients with ALL in order to have insights regarding behavior of the disease. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis of all the cases of ALL (${\geq}15$years old) diagnosed at Aga Khan University from January 2006 to June 2014 was performed. Phenotype (B/T lineage) was confirmed in all cases by flow cytometry. Cytogenetic analysis was made for all cases using the trypsin-Giemsa banding technique. Karyotypes were interpreted using the International System for Human Cytogenetic Nomenclature (ISCN) criteria. Results: A total of 166 patients were diagnosed as ALL during the study period, of which 151 samples successfully yielded metaphase chromosomes. The male to female ratio was 3.4:1. The majority (n=120, 72.3%) had a B-cell phenotype. A normal karyotype was present in 51% (n=77) of the cases whereas 49% (n=74) had an abnormal karyotype. Of the abnormal cases, 10% showed Philadelphia chromosome; t(9;22)(q34;q11.2). Other poor prognostic cytogenetic subgroups were t(4;11)(q21;q23), hypodiploidy (35-45 chromosomes) and complex karyotype. Hyperdiploidy (47-57 chromosomes) occurred in 6.6%; all of whom were younger than 30 years. Conclusions: This study showed a relatively low prevalence of Philadelphia chromosome in Pakistani adults with ALL with an increase in frequency with age (p=0.003). The cumulative prevalence of Philadelphianegative poor cytogenetic aberrations in different age groups was not significant (p=0.6).

  • We examined relationship between rainfall and triggering of shallow landslides in South Korea, based on hourly rainfall data for 478 shallow landslides during 1963-2012. Rainfall intensity(I) and duration(D) relationship was analyzed to obtain the I-D threshold for the initiation of a shallow landslide using the quantile regression analysis. The I-D threshold equation from in this study is: $I=9.64D^{-0.27}$($4{\leq}D{\leq}76$), where I and D are expressed in millimeters per hour and hours, respectively. In addition, rainfall criteria were proposed to predict the potential to cause landslides, based on values of I-D and cumulative rainfall derived from quantile regression analysis. Our findings may provide essential data and important evidences for the improvement of landslide warning and evacuation system.

  • Purpose: To evaluate whether combined transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) or percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have superior efficacy to transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) alone a retrospective review was conducted. Methods: During January 2009 to March 2013, 108 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma underwent TACE or combined therapies (TACE+RFA or TACE+PEI). The long-term survival rates were evaluated in those patients by various statistical analyses. Results: The cumulative survival rates in the combined TACE+RFA/PEI group were significantly superior to those in the TACE alone group. When the comparison among the groups was restricted to patients with two or three tumors fulfilling the Milan criteria, significantly greater prolongation of survival was observed in the combined TACE+ RFA/PEI group than in the RFA/PEI alone group. Conclusions: In terms of the effect on the survival period, combined TACE+ RFA/PEI therapy was more effective than TACE monotherapy, and also more effective than PEI or RFA monotherapy in cases with multiple tumors.

  • Background: Sevelamer is associated with reduced complications of chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder (CKD-MBD) resulted from hyperphosphatemia, which may contribute mortality, in CKD patients with dialysis. So far clinical outcomes of sevelamer on mortality and risk of cardiovascular mortality related to CKD-MBD are debating. Purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of sevelamer HCl on mortality of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), risk of cardiovascular mortality and, frequency of osteopathy in end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients with dialysis. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of 536 patients with ESRD, who were admitted for moderate to severe SHPT, for 36 months. 75 patients who met inclusion criteria were evaluated for the efficacy of sevelamer (mean serum iPTH = 487.5 pg/mL). Results: Sevelamer intervention was not associated with increased three-year survival time compared with non-sevelamers group [average survival month: 30.4 months in sevelamer group, 26.8 months in non-sevelamer group, p = 0.463]. Sevelamer intervention was not associated with significant mortality benefit and cardiovascular mortality benefit as compared to non-sevelamer group [sevelamer group: non-sevelamer group, all-cause mortality (iPTH > 600 pg/mL): 14.3% (1/34): 20% (1/41) p = 0.962, OR = 0.935, 95% CI, 0.058-14.98, heart disease mortality: 6.67% (2/30): 0% (0/32) p = 0.138]. Sevelamer was not associated with significantly lower cumulative incidence of osteopathy compared to non-sevelamer group (sevelamer group: non-sevelamer group, 5.9% (2/34):9.8% (4/41); p = 0.538; OR = 0.578; 95% CI, 0.099-3.367). Conclusion: Sevelamer was not associated with decreased all-cause mortality and risk of cardiovascular mortality compared to non-sevelamer group in ESRD patients with SHPT.

  • A district heating(DH) system supplies environmentally-friend heat and is appropriate for reduction of energy consumption and/or air pollutions. The DH transmission pipe, composed of supply and return pipes, has been used to transmit the heat and prevent heat loss during transportation. The two types of pipes are operated at a temperature of $75\~115^{\circ}C\;and\;40\~65^{\circ}C$, respectively, with an operating pressure of less than 1.568MPa. The objectives of this paper are to systematize data processing of transition temperature and investigate its effects on fatigue life of DH pipes. For the sake of this, about 5 millions temperature data were measured during one year at ten locations, and then available fatigue lift estimation schemes were examined and applied to quantify the specific thermal fatigue life of each pipe. As a result, a relational database management system as well as reliable fatigue lift evaluation procedures is established for Korean DH pipes. Also, since the prototypal evaluation results satisfied both cycle-based and stress-based fatigue criteria, those can be used as useful information in the future fer optimal design, operation and energy saving via setting of efficient condition and stabilization of water temperature.

  • The objective of this study is to explore the applicability of very short-range-forecast rainfall for the early warning of mud-debris flows. An artificial neural network was applied to use the very short-range-forecast rainfall data. The neural network is learned by using the relationship between the radar and the AWS, and forecasted rainfall is estimated by replacing the radar rainfall with the MAPLE data as the very short-range-forecast rainfall data. The applicability of forecasted rainfall by the MAPLE was compared with the AWS rainfall at the test-bed using the rainfall criteria for cumulative rainfall of 6hr, 12hr, and 24hr respectively. As a result, it was confirmed that forecasted rainfall using the MAPLE can be issued prior to the AWS warning.
