An analysis on effectiveness of circular culvert fishway (원형암거 어도의 효과 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to present the necessity and effect of culvert fishway, based on the absence of design criteria for it which fishes can pass. As an attempt for this purpose, circular culvert fishway were designed hydraulically to meet the passage condition for selected target fish species, and post-monitoring was performed to confirm its effectiveness. In the case of general circular culvert without weir baffles, the target fish species cannot pass because of the constant depth and velocity in the entire reach of the circular culvert, so it was confirmed that resting pools must be installed to help fish passage. In the case of circular culvert with weir baffles, the depth and the mean velocity in resting pool increased by about 240% and decreased by about 70% respectively, which not only satisfied the passage conditions of Zacco platypus that can swim at more than 10 times the speed of body length for 1 to 5 seconds, but also confirmed that various river fish could pass. Post-monitoring results of the restoration reach and fish capture monitoring surveys of circular culvert fishway demonstrated that the target fish species, Zacco platypus, can pass through it.

A Study on the Water Spray Distribution in Underground Culvert (공동구내 분무분포에 관한 연구)

  • In underground culvert are established main and basic facilities for electric power, communication, gas and heating pipe etc. In the future the use of underground culvert will be enlarged and the peril of fire will be increased. Thus it is necessary to make a general plan to prevent fire. The skills to prevent fire in underground culvert will be accumulated by the spray distribution of the nozzle and domestic skills in fire fighting will be upgraded. It will also contribute to the construction of common small fire fighting system suitable to the domestic surrounding and the growth of domestic skills for fire fighting and disaster prevention.

Numerical analysis of steel-soil composite (SSC) culvert under static loads

  • The paper presents a numerical analysis of a steel-soil composite (SSC) culvert in the scope of static (dead and live) loads. The Abaqus program based on the finite element method (FEM) was used for calculations. Maximum displacements were obtained in the shell crown, and the largest stresses in the haunches. Calculation results were compared with the experimental ones and previous calculations obtained from the Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis (ARSA) program. The shapes of calculated displacements and stresses are similar to those obtained with the experiment, but the absolute values were generally higher than measured ones. The relative differences of calculated and measured values were in the range of 5-23% for displacements, and 15-42% for stresses. Developed calculation model of the SSC culvert in the Abaqus program allows obtaining reasonable values of internal forces in the culvert. Using both calculation programs, the relative differences for displacements were in the range of 15-39%, and 17-44% for stresses in favour of the Abaqus program. Three design methods (Sundquist-Pettersson, Duncan and CHBDC) were used to calculate the axial thrusts and bending moments. Obtained values were compared with test results. Generally, the design methods have conservative assumptions, especially in the live loads distribution, safety factors and consideration the interaction between soil and steel structure.

  • The objective of this study is to develop the expert system for R/C box culvert design. This program provided various functions to improve automatic design. The program is composed of five steps. The characteristics of each step are as follows; 1) Preprocessing Step, 2) Analysis Step, 3) View of Memberforce Step, 4) Postprocessing Step, 5) Printing of Design-Sheet Step. Finally, Expert System and Knowledge Database System is developed for the drawing of optimal R/C box-culvert design.

Shape Optimization for Reinforced Concrete Culvert (철근콘크리트 암거의 형상 최적화)

  • In this paper, the shape optimization is considered over the upper slab of reinforced concrete culvert. The sequential linear programming method (SLP) is used as a rational approach to this shape optimization. To make a comparison between the arch shaped member and the straight member for the upper slab, the culverts with 5~20m earth height were adopted. It is shown that the optimum rise/span is about 7%-13%, and the arch shaped member is more cheap (over 10%) than the straight member for the construction cost.

  • In this paper, we develope the bucket driven dredger for sludge treatment in box type culvert. The dreadger is opererated in $2m\;{\times}\;2m$ box type narrow culvert under the road, and controlled using remote controller on the remote zone. In order to operate under dangerous environment, we develope the bucket drived dredger, and we will commercialize the result.

  • This study is intended to discuss the application of blast slag for concrete to improve the durability of precast concrete box culvert. The precast concrete box culverts with blast slag are tested to verify the effect of early strength. The results show that the initial cracking load and yielding load of the blast slag concrete members are increased when they are compared with those of the normal concrete. In the prototype precast concrete box culvert experiment, initial crack control effect and ductility index are increased. It can be concluded that the use of blast slag was improved the durability in precast concrete box culvert.

A Simplified Design Method of Culvert Outlet for Detention Pond (저류지 방류암거의 간편설계기법)

  • Recently increased rainfall by abnormal climate, risen peak runoff by urbanization, and shorten time of concentration are causing frequent overflow at downstream basin. This problem will be solved through the runoff reduction facilities like detention pond. However so far, most studies about detention pond in Korea are focused on its capacity. A study with respect to outlet facilities of detention pond was insignificant. Design of culvert usually used for outlet facilities of detention pond is generally carried out by using "Road Drainage Design" of Korea Expressway Corporation (1991). So detention pond is unreasonable to apply it. In this study, the culvert flow in submerged condition of upstream at culvert was analyzed., and simplified design procedure for culvert outlet facilities were presented for detention pond.
