A Study on Cultural Learning Through Cultural Comparison Activities: Focusing on Learner Perception

  • The aims of this study were to introduce cultural teaching procedures and propose cultural comparison activities as a practical method of cultural learning. It also analyzed learners' attitudes toward cultural learning through the aforementioned activities and examined considerations for holding cultural classes in the future. The research involved conducting a class underlain by four stages: warm-up, a cultural item comparison activity, wrap-up, and opinion submission. Data were collected through self-opinion journals and open-ended questionnaires, after which they were qualitatively analyzed. The results showed that the learners were highly satisfied with cultural learning through cultural comparison activities (73.7%) because of the efficiency of such a learning method, opportunities for proactive learning through interaction, increased interest and motivation, and the fact that it helps them understand their own cultures. We need to develop activities that enable learners to participate in a variety of ways through the mutual exchange of opinions when planning cultural classes. Pedagogical implications for integrated language and cultural classes are provided.

재배적 안정성이 높은 참깨 계통 선발 (Selection of Varieties with Higher Cultural Stability in Sesamum indicum)

  • This study was conducted to select sesame varieties with high cultural stabilities by comparing several parameters of agronomic traits under the different cultural environments. Of the six areas, Iksan and Jinju areas which showed positively larger environment index values were relatively adequate cultural conditions for sesame. At the comparison of cultural stability of agronomic traits by Eberhart and Russell regression model among sesame breeding lines, Suwon 169 showed more stable regression coefficient values to the number of capsules per plant, number of seeds per capsule and seed weight per plant, and Iksan 12 showed more stable regression coefficient values to culm length and weight per plant. At the comparison of cultural stability of yield per 10a, Suwon 169 and Iksan 12 among sesame breeding lines showed more stable respectively, deviation values of 0.99, 0.98 respectively, and more less regression deviation values of 0.074, 0.167 respectively. Therefore those breeding lines are comparatively higher stabilities to yield determining agronomic traits under the different cultural environments, and it was concluded that those two breeding lines had the possibility to recommend promising breeding lines in the future.

Cross-Cultural Comparison of Sound Sensation and Its Prediction Models for Korean Traditional Silk Fabrics

  • In this study, cross-cultural comparison of sound sensation for Korean traditional silk fabrics between Korea and America was performed and prediction models for sound sensation by objective measurements including sound parameters such as level pressure of total sound (LPT), Zwicker's psychoacoustic characteristics, and mechanical properties by Kawabata Evaluation System were established for each nation to explore the objective parameters explaining sound sensation of the Korean traditional silk. As results, Koreans felt the silk fabric sounds soft and smooth while Americans were revealed as perceiving them hard and rough. Both Koreans and Americans were pleasant with sounds of Gongdan and Newttong and especially Newttong was preferred more by Americans in terms of sound sensation. In prediction models, some of subjective sensation were found as being related mainly with mechanical properties of traditional silk fabrics such as surface and compressional characteristics.

경남지역 다문화가정과 일반가정 초등학생들의 식습관, 음식기호도 비교 연구 (Comparison of Eating Habits and Food Preference of Elementary School Children between Multi-cultural Families and Ordinary Families in Gyeongnam Province)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the eating habits and food preferences of elementary school children belong to multi-cultural families and ordinary families. The data were obtained by interview based on questionnaire from November to December in 2012. The subjects of multi-cultural families and ordinary families were 99 and 376 children, respectively. In comparison with eating habits, the ordinary children showed higher scoring in the items of eating proteins, green and yellow vegetables, and fruits or fruit juice than those of multi-cultural children. The ordinary children ate less midnight-meals than those of multi-cultural children (p<0.05). Furthermore, the ordinary children ate kimchi more frequently than the multi-cultural children. It was significantly different (p<0.05) on the items of 'eating-out types' dietary habits between two groups. Education of mothers correlated with the ordinary children's eating habits more than multi-cultural families. In the investigation of the food preference to Korean foods, 'beef and radish soup', 'pumpkin porridge', and 'wheat flakes noodles' were more preferred by children of ordinary families than by those of multi-cultural families (p<0.05). To conclude, nutritional education for their parents should be done and maintained to keep a right eating habit of children of multi-cultural families even at home.

사회비교와 행복의 관계에서 문화적 자기관의 역할 (The Moderation Effect of Cultural Self-construal on a Social Comparison and Happiness)

  • 본 연구는 사회비교와 행복의 관계에 미치는 문화적 자기관의 영향을 살펴보기 위해 수행되었다. 사회비교와 행복은 부적관계에 있다고 알려져 있지만 사회비교의 결과는 비교 당사자의 자기인식과 비교동기에 따라 달라진다는 견해 역시 존재한다. 본 연구는 문화적 자기관이 사회비교와 행복에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 전국 5대 권역(수도권, 강원, 충청, 전라, 경상)에서 표집한 권역 당 4개 연령대(30대, 40대, 50대, 60대) 각 100명씩, 총 2,000명을 대상으로 문화적 자기관(상호협조적 자기, 주체성-대상성 자기), 사회비교경향, 주관적 안녕감 및 심리적 안녕감을 조사하였다. 연구의 결과를 요약하면, 첫째, 상호협조적 자기는 사회비교와 정적상관을, 행복과는 부적상관을 보였고, 둘째, 상호협조적 자기가 높은 사람들은 사회비교를 많이 할수록 주관적 안녕감이 낮았지만, 낮은 사람들은 사회비교가 행복에 영향을 끼치지 않았다. 셋째, 대상성 자기가 높은 사람들은 사회비교를 많이 할수록 행복이 낮았지만, 주체성 자기가 높은 사람들은 사회비교가 행복에 영향을 미치지 않았다. 이를 바탕으로 사회비교의 결과에 영향을 미치는 자기관의 성격과 행복의 문화적 의미 등에 대해 논의하였다.

Studies on the Restitution of the Imaginary Environment through the Comparison of Korean, Chinese and Japanese Historical and Cultural Landscape

  • This study had the purpose to restore imaginary environment involved to symbolic thinking system of Eastern culture discontinued by scientific and reasonable rationalism of Western. To restore imaginary environment, this study selected example places such as Seoul, Beijing, Kyoto which were ancient cities of Korea, China, Japan each and used hermeneutics and phenomenological access method to draw out the element of imaginary environment by analyzing historical and cultural view of example cities. Through comparison and re-interpretation of historical and cultural view of three countries[Korea, China, Japan] in Northeast Asia, as the result of drawing imaginary environment involved within it, it was structured that the spirit and the factor of natural environment of places involved to each cities were reflected as the factor of civilized environment, organized that each element was united, and more sanctified the spirit of place step by step. This study has the meaning as first trial which comparatively analyzed city spaces of existent place of human life by new concept called imaginary environment. It may has the meaning that verifying the universality of imaginary environment involved to historical and cultural view of three Northeast Asian countries, however, there was limitation to examine specificity up to detailed elements of each city.

English Medium Instruction in Higher Education: Does It Promote Cultural Correction or Cultural Continuity?

  • This study investigates English medium instruction (EMI) in an institution of higher education in Seoul, Korea to see whether this course creates cultural correction (reproduction of inequitable relations of power in EMI settings) or cultural continuity (opportunities for transporting students into a third space and enabling them to explore cultural diversity and to create new knowledge for themselves). A single site where EMI is carried out, a class on fairy tales and child education taught by a native English speaking professor, was chosen because it was hypothesized that the professor would display some of her unconscious dominant cultural orientation. The results of the study show that there more cases of cultural correction than there were of cultural continuity. Cases of cultural correction included lack of knowledge about the local context, fixing Korean classroom discourse as if it were American classroom discourse, and reproducing orientalism in the local educational setting. Cases of cultural continuity included using comparison to consider the cultural reality of the milieu, creating new knowledge for the local milieu, and learning as a dynamic ongoing process. Implications of this research are discussed including the important realization that EMI should be managed by subject specialists who are trained in language education and have knowledge of the students' needs and discourse in the L1 and in the local context.

다문화아동과 일반아동의 작업기억 및 음운인식 능력 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study on the Working Memory and the Phonological Awareness between Children with Multi-cultural Families and General Families)

  • 본 연구는 다문화아동과 일반아동의 작업기억과 음운인식능력이 집단 간에 차이가 있는지를 알아보고자 하였다. 연구대상은 전라남도 D시에 거주하며 초등학교 1~3학년에 재학중인 다문화 아동 15명과 일반아동 15명이었다. 작업기억을 검사하기 위하여 K-TTFC-2를 실시하였고, 음운인식능력을 검사하기 위하여 아동들의 연령을 고려하여 음소수준의 검사만을 실시하였다. 연구결과는 첫째, 다문화아동과 일반아동의 작업기억의 차이를 비교한 결과 유의미한 차이가 있었다. 둘째, 다문화아동과 일반아동의 음운인식능력 중에서 음소 수준의 차이를 비교한 결과 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 있었다. 셋째, 다문화 아동과 일반아동의 하위과제별 차이를 비교한 결과 음 짝짓기(어중 종성), 단음절 단어에서 중성 대치하기, 음 전환하기에서 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 있었다. 따라서 본 연구를 통해 다문화 아동의 음운 및 작업기억 결과를 고려한 치료를 위한 기초자료로 활용할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

환대산업에서 문화적 가치의 Social Media를 통한 Electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM)에 대한 영향 -중국, 한국, 미국 간의 문화 비교 연구- (The cultural value effects on social media eWOM in the hospitality industry -A cross cultural study of comparison among China, Korea, and the USA-)

  • Social Media 상의 Electronic word-of-mouth(eWOM)는 다양한 사업 경영에 있어서 핵심적인 마케팅 도구로 인식되고 있다. 환대산업에서는 이 Social Media eWOM를 이해하는 것은 잠재적 고객들에게 국제적으로 쉽고 빠르게 다가가는 핵심요인이라 볼 수 있다. 그러나 환대산업분야에서의 Social Media eWOM의 효율성을 국제적 관점에서 평가하는 실증 연구는 아주 부족한 실정이다. 환대산업시장의 경쟁적인 특성을 고려하면, 마케팅 종사자들은 Social Media eWOM의 효율성의 평가는 물론, 외국인 고객을 촉진하고 수익성을 증대하기 위한 문화적 요소에 의한 효과의 평가하여야 한다. 본 연구의 핵심 목적은 환대산업에서 Social Media eWOM가 문화적 가치에 영향력을 검증하는 것이다. 본 연구는 중국, 한국, 미국의 세 나라를 비교 하여 나라마다 Social Media eWOM에 관여하는 정도의 차이의 존재를 실증하였다. 본 연구는 환대산업 마케터에게 국제적 Social Media 마케팅 전략에 중요한 의미를 제공할 것이라 기대된다.
