Effects of Fruit-set Position and Number of Fruits set per plant on netting, Fruit quality and Fruit weight in Netted melon (Cucumis melo L. var. reticulatus) (네트멜론의 착과절위 및 착과수가 네트발현, 품질 및 과중에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to determine the effect of fruit-set position and number of fruit set per plant on yield and quality including netting in "Super VIP" melon cultivated in spring season. 1) In training system of one fruit per plant, index of netting was acceptable, regardless of the node position of fruit-set. The higher node order of fruit set was, the heavier, longer, bigger in diameter the fruit set was, and the thicker the flesh was. However, soluble suger content and storability was decreased with increased node order. 2) In training system of two fruit per plant, the higher the fruit-set position in node order was, the better the netting index, fruit quality including fruit weight, length, diameter, and thickness of flesh were, but there was no difference in storability. 3) Fruits produced by one-fruit-per-plant training were superior to those produced by two-fruit-per-plant training in maker quality including netting, sugar content, stcrability. The fruit set on 12th node in one-fruit-per-plant training were the best in market quality. 4) Yield was increased by two-fruit-per-plant training.

Selection of Quality Indicator to Determine the Freshness of Muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) during Distribution (머스크멜론의 유통 중 신선도 판정을 위한 품질 지표 선정)

  • This study was conducted to identify quality indicators to determine freshness of muskmelon during distribution. The correlation between each quality characteristic and organoleptic preference was analyzed after examining weight loss, firmness, soluble solid content, chromaticity, and respiration rate of and changes in the organoleptic characteristics during storage at 0, 10, 20 and $30^{\circ}C$ after harvesting. The correlation between weight loss and preference according to the storage temperature was shown to be significant (p<0.01). The correlation between firmness and preference was shown to be highly significant (R=0.74, 0.78, 0.88, and 0.83 at 0, 10, 20, and $30^{\circ}C$) under all temperature conditions, and was shown to be especially highly significant (p<0.01) when the temperature was high. In the case of storage at 20 and $30^{\circ}C$, a significant correlation between soluble-solid content and preference was shown. Therefore, it is right to apply the change in weight loss and firmness that indicated a high correlation with organoleptic preference as a quality indicator at all storage temperatures.

The Establishment of Critical Ranges of Inorganic Nutrition Contents in Leaves of Net Melon(Cucumis melo L.) in Protected Cultivation (시설재배 멜론 엽의 적정양분함량 설정)

  • This study was carried out to elucidate the relationship between yields and inorganic nutrient contents, and then establish of critical range of inorganic nutrient contents in leaves of net melon in protected cultivation in Naju from 2004 to 2006. In considering the yields and nutrient contents of net melon, the critical ranges of macro-nutrient contents in leaves of net melon at 25 days after transplanting were in N 3.4~4.8%, P 0.4~0.7%, K 3.4~5.1%, Ca 2.7~4.1% and Mg 0.6~0.8%, respectably. The critical ranges of micronutrient content, such as Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu and B, were not found the regular trend with different growth stages. However, the critical range of micronutrient contents in leaves of net melon at 25 days after transplanting were in Fe 102~164, Mn 52~116, Zn 28~98, Cu 7~15 and B $36{\sim}72mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectably. Finally, these results might be used at the indicator for critical nutrient contents for diagnosis of nutritional disorder in net melon in protected cultivation.

First Report of an Unrecorded Nematode-trapping Fungus, Arthrobotrys sinensis in Korea (국내 미기록 선충포식성 곰팡이 Arthrobotrys sinensis의 형태 및 분류)

  • Nematode-trapping fungi use various specialized traps to capture nematodes. A fungus that can capture nematodes in three dimensional adhesive networks was isolated from the soil around the root of Cucumis melo L. (Oriental melon) in Seongju, Korea. The conidiophores were found to be septate, hyaline, erect and $290-528(342.8){\mu}m$ high. It produces obovoid shape and 1-3 septate (commonly 2-septate) conidia with a size of $30.5{\times}20.3{\mu}m$. Molecular analysis of 5.8 S rDNA displayed 99% similarity to Arthrobotrys sinensis. On the basis of morphological, morphometric and molecular studies, the fungus was identified as A. sinensis. It is the first report in Korea which can be one of biological control resource of plant-parasitic nematode.

Antioxidant Effects and Tyrosinase Inhibition Activity of Oriental Melon (Cucumis melo L. var makuwa Makino) Extracts. (참외 추출물의 항산화 효과 및 tyrosinase 저해활성)

  • The biological activities of water extracts from different fruit parts, such as peel, flesh, and placenta, of oriental melon were investigated. The concentrations of total phenolic in fruit extracts were $816.37\;{\mu}g/ml$, $385.23\;{\mu}g/ml$, and $925.56\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Whereas the total flavonoid content in the peel extracts was $231.21\;{\mu}g/ml$, those in the extract of flesh and placenta were $8.16\;{\mu}g/ml$ and $36.07\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The DPPH free radical scavenging activity of each fruit extract at 10,000 ppm was 34.84% for peel, 10.70% for placenta and 9.26% flesh. The ABTS radical cation decolorizing activity of each fruit extract at 10,000 ppm was in fruit extracts were 72.92% for peel, 48.0% for flesh and 74.31% for placenta. In addition, xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity, ${\alpha}-Glucosidase$ inhibition activity, and tyrosinase inhibition activity of the peel extracts appeared to be higher than those of placenta and flesh. Taken together, these results indicated that the peel part of oriental melon contained higher level of total flavonoid content, and several physiological activities including antioxidation, ${\alpha}-Glucosidase$ inhibition activity, and tyrosinase inhibition activity than did the flesh and placenta parts, and suggested that the peel might have a potential to be applicable as a source for functional foods.

Effect of Double Layer Nonwoven Fabrics on the Growth, Quality and Yield of Oriental Melon(Cucumis melo L. var. makuwa Mak.) under Vinyl House (보온부직포 이중피복이 참외의 생육, 품질 및 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • The use of blankets to preserve heat in oriental melon cultivation is a common practise without artificial heating and warming systems. Efficiency of blanket decreased with annually usage. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of double layer nonwoven fabrics on heat conservation, plant growth, fruit quality and yield of oriental melon in greenhouse. The results were compared among the non-woven fabrics of 9+3, 6+6, 6+3 and 12 ounce from transplanting to April 20, 2001, 2002. Night temperature within tunnel was high at 9+3, 6+6, 6+3 and 12 ounce in order. In plant growth, stem length, leaf numbers and exudate, under double layer nonwoven fabrics were better than single layer blanket of 12 ounce especially, 9+3 double layer blanket was the best. Fruit weight, flesh thickness, soluble solid and marketable yield rate remained same in all treatments. Fermented fruit rate was the highest in 12 ounce as $32.9\%,\;19.6\%\;under\;9+3,\;17.1\%\;under\;6+6,\;16.6\%$ under 6+3 double layer nonwoven fabric, respectively. Compared to 2,260kg yield per 10a of 12 ounce single layer nonwoven fabrics, $7\%$ was increased under 9+3 but $3\%\;and\;13\%$ were decreased under 6+6 and 6+3 double layer nonwoven fabrics, respectively. Compared to income, 4,499-thousand-won per 10a, of 12 ounce single layer blanket, $13\%\;and\;3$ were increased under 9+3 and 6+6 double layer nonwoven fabrics, respectively. Whereas, $10\%$ decreased under 6+3 double layer nonwoven fabrics. From this results it is evident that 9+3 double layer nonwoven fabrics was the best for thermokeeping, fruit quality, and was most economic under non heating system.

Effect of Solid $CO_2$ Generator Treatment on Fruit Yield and Quality of Korean Melon(Cucumis melo var. hybrida) (탄산가스 발생제 처리가 참외의 품질 및 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of this study was to examine the changes in carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) concentration due to application of solid $CO_2$ generator (Tansansol) in plastic greenhouses during winter cultivation of Korean melon. The experimental treatments consisted of four levels, namely, 0 (control) 10, 20 and 30bags with solid $CO_2$ generator per $600m^2$ of plastic greenhouse. $CO_2$ concentration in plots with solid gas generators was higher by 3.0-3.2% compared to control. Fruit weight, sugar content and color parameter were also enhanced due to application of solid $CO_2$ generator. The fraction of fermentated and unmarketable fruits were decreased by 2.9-3.9% and 5.4-7.3%, respectively, in plots where solid $CO_2$ generators were applied. The marketable yield increased by 10.3, 14.8 and 16.2% in plots with 10, 20 and 30bags with $CO_2$ generators, respectively. As a result, $CO_2$ concentration within the greenhouses was increased by applying $CO_2$ generators and it is positively affected the rate of photosynthesis.

Evaluation of Available Soil Silicon Extracting Procedures for Oriental Melon (참외 시설재배 토양에 대한 유효규산 추출방법 비교)

  • Soil testing for silicon (Si) in the upland soils has not been sufficiently investigated. The objective of this study was to identify a suitable Si extraction method for upland soils of oriental melon (Cucumis melo L.). Thirty-eight surface soil samples and matured leaf samples were collected from plastic film houses in Sungju, Gyeongbuk province. In the laboratory, six different methods were used for extracting Si from the soils. The methods included 0.5 N HCl extraction, 1 N sodium acetate buffer (PH 4.0) extraction, citric acid 1% extraction, water extraction, Tiis buffer pH 7.0 extraction, and extraction after incubation with water for 1 week. The concentration of dissolved Si in soil extracts from all methods was determined colorimetrically. With 1 N sodium acetate buffer extraction, as the available soil Si increased, the concentration ofSi in oriental melon leaf increased until around $14g\;SiO_2\;kg^{-1}$ was reached in the form of a saturation curve. Also, among the methods studied, extraction with 1 N sodium acetate buffer was the only method provided a significant linear correlation with oriental melon leaf Si content in the range of extractable soil Si lower than the level which inducing Si saturation in oriental melon leaf. These results indicate that 1 N sodium acetate buffer extraction procedure is the best soil Si test method for upland soils of oriental melon. This sodium acetate buffer extraction procedure is rapid and quite well acquainted with scientists and farmers, since the method has been used for routine paddy soil testing.

Effect of Pollination Method on Fruit Setting and Quality of Oriental Melon(Cucumis melo L. var, makuwa Makino) (착과방법이 참외의 착과 및 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • A study was conducted on three pollination methods on oriental melon(sageageol-ggul) grafting with pumpkin(seongjutozoa) for the labor-saving and to improve fruit set. Fruit weight, flesh thickness and fruit setting rate of oriental melon were greater in growth regulators treatment than those of pollinated by bees. Sugar content and hardness of fruits pollinated by bees were higher than those of by growth regulators. From the last ten days of the February to the first ten days of the March, fruit setting rate was $95\%$ in fruit setting growth regulators, whereas it was $46\%$ and $45\%$ in pollinated by honey and bumble bee, respectively. After the middle of March, the percentage of fruit setting was >$98\%$ in all the pollination methods. The cultivation under plastic houses of oriental melon, suitable fruiting time far the pollination by bees was decided after middle days of the March. Chromaticity and especially the value of 'a' of fruit of oriental melon pollinated by bees were higher than those of growth regulators. The percentage of fermented fruits of bee pollinated and growth regulators treated was $6.7\~9.1\%\;and\;28.1\%$, respectively. The weight of 100 seeds of bees pollinated were higher than that of growth regulators. The more increased the weight of 100 seeds the less appeared the rate of fermented fruits. The percentage of marketable fruits of the honey and bumble bee pollinated and that of growth regulators treated was $82\%,\;80.3\%\;and\;62.5\%$, respectively. The decreasing rate of fruit weight during storage of bees pollinated was less than those of growth regulators. In these results, the introduction of honey bee and bumble bee for the pollination of oriental melon was able to labor-saving of fruit set and increase of fruit quality.

Growth and Quality of Two Melon Cultivars in Hydroponics Affected by Mixing Ratio of Coir Substrate and Different Irrigation Amount on Spring Season (멜론 봄 재배 시 코이어 배지경에서 배지 혼합 비율과 급액량에 따른 생육 및 품질)

  • Melons are mostly grown in soil, but it is susceptible to damage due to injury by continuous cropping such as Fusarium wilt and root rot. Hydroponic cultivation system can overcome the disadvantages of soil cultivation with precise nutrition management and a clean environment. When using the coir substrate, the most environmentally friendly organic substrate used for hydroponics, it is analyzed how the growth and fruit quality of the melon depends on the ratio of chips and dust and the amount of irrigation. The purpose of this study was to provide the basic data of melon hydroponics when cultivated in spring. The two types of the coir substrates used in the experiments were chip and dust ratios of 3 :7 and 5 : 5 respectively. The substrate with high dust ratios had excellent physical characteristics, such as container capacity and total porosity, and the drainage EC level showed a high value of $3.0-6.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. When the amount of irrigation is provided based on the drainage rate, the group provided the nutrient solution on the basis of 10% drainage supplied 91 L per plant, which was reduced by about 30% compared to the group with the highest water supply. In addition, the total drainage showed less than 10 L per plant with a minimum water supply and was reduced by 30 - 70% in substrate with a high dust rates. In substrate with high water supply and high dust ratio, leaf growth and fruit enlargement were good, and the soluble solids content varies greatly from cultivar to cultivar. If you provided the amount of irrigation based on 10% drainage rate, the fruit weight will be decreased, but the amount of irrigation can be reduced. Therefore, it is considered that managing the water & nutrient properly taking into account the characteristics of coir substrate and cultivar can produce melon of uniform quality using hydroponics.
