An approximate line search is presented for dynamic response optimization with Augmented Lagrange Multiplier(ALM) method. This study empolys the approximate a augmented Lagrangian, which can improve the efficiency of the ALM method, while maintaining the global convergence of the ALM method. Although the approximate augmented Lagragian is composed of only the linearized cost and constraint functions, the quality of this approximation should be good since an approximate penalty term is found to have almost second-order accuracy near the optimum. Typical unconstrained optimization algorithms such as quasi-Newton and conjugate gradient methods are directly used to find exact search directions and a golden section method followed by a cubic polynomial approximation is empolyed for approximate line search since the approximate augmented Lagrangian is a nonlinear function of design variable vector. The numberical performance of the proposed approach is investigated by solving three typical dynamic response optimization problems and comparing the results with those in the literature. This comparison shows that the suggested approach is robust and efficient.

Propellers operating in a given nonuniform ship wake generate unsteady loads leading to undesirable stern vibration problems. The skew is known to be the most proper and effective geometric parameter to control or reduce the fluctuating forces on the shaft. This paper assumes the skew profile as either a quadratic or a cubic function of the radius and determines the coefficients of the polynomial function by applying the simplex method. The method uses the converted unconstrained algorithm to solve the constrained minimization problem of 6-component shaft excitation forces. The propeller excitation was computed either by applying the two-dimensional gust theory for quick estimation or by the fully three-dimensional unsteady lifting surface theory in time domain for an accurate solution. A sample result demonstrates that the shaft forces can be further reduced through optimization from the original design.

The optimization of many engineering design problems requires a nonlinear programming algorithm that is robust and efficient. A general-purpose nonlinear optimization program IDOL (Interactive Design Optimization Library) is developed based on the Augmented Lagrange Mulitiplier (ALM) method. The ideas of selecting a good initial design point, using resonable initial values for Lagrange multipliers, constraints scaling, descent vector restarting, and dynamic stopping criterion are employed for computational enhancement to the ALM method. A descent vector is determined by using the Broydon-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) method. For line search, the Incremental-Search method is first used to find bounds on the solution, then the bounds are reduced by the Golden Section method, and finally a cubic polynomial approximation technique is applied to locate the next design point. Seven typical test problems are solved to show IDOL efficient and robust.

The identification of nonlinear system using Extended GMDH(EGMDH) is studied in this paper. The proposed EGMDH algorithm is based on GMDH(Group Method of Data handling) method and its structure is similar to Neural Networks. The each node of EGMDH structure utilizes several types of high-order polynomial such as linear, quadratic and cubic, and is connected as various kinds of multi-variable inputs. As the operating condition changes, the parameters of EGMDH will also change, so the proposed scheme by means of the EGMDH method is capable of adapting rapidly to the changing environment. The simulation result shows that the simple nonlinear process can be modeled reasonably well by the proposed method which are simple but efficient.
This paper describes the methods of spline low-order polynomial trajectory planning using only a few limited look-ahead knots on the desired trajectory for the real-time computing. Specifically presented are the mixed joint trajectory planning methods which apply linear or LSPB method to initial and finial segments, overlapped cubic spline method to the other segments, where the displacements for initial and finial segments are chosen to be relatively smaller than the displacements for the other, equidistant segments. Experimental and simulation results of these methods show smooth motions and improved path tracking performances compared with any other interpolated joint trajectory planning methods.
Like the usual systems, the industrial robot manipulator has some constraints for motion. Usually we hope that the manipulators move fast to accomplish the given task. The problem can be formulated as the time-optimal control problem under the constraints such as the limits of velocity, acceleration and jerk. But it is very difficult to obtain the exact solution of the time-optimal control problem. This paper solves this problem in two steps. In the first step, we find the minimum time trajectories by optimizing cubic polynomial joint trajectories under the physical constraints using the modified evolution strategy. In the second step, the controller is optimized for robot manipulator to track precisely the optimized trajectory found in the previous step. Experimental results for SCARA type manipulator show that the proposed method is very useful.

Mixture experiments involve combining ingredients or components of a mixture and the response is a function of the proportions of ingredients which is independent of the total amount of a mixture. The purpose of the mixture experiments is to find the optimum blending at which responses such as the flavor and acceptability are maximized. We assume the quadratic or special cubic canonical polynomial model over the experimental region for a mixture since the current mixture is assumed to be located in the neighborhood of the optimal mixture. The cost of the mixture is proportional to the cost of the ingredients of the mixture and is the linear function of the proportions of the ingredients. In this paper, we propose mixture response surface methods to develop a mixture such that the cost is down more than ten percent as well as mean responses are as good as those from the current mixture. The proposed methods are illustrated with the well known the flare experimental data described by McLean and Anderson(1966).
This paper deals with large deformation post-buckling of a linear-elastic and hygrothermal beam with axially nonmovable pinned-pinned ends and subjected to a significant increase in swelling by an alternative method. Analytical approximate solutions for the geometrically nonlinear problem are presented. The solution for the limiting case of a string is also obtained. By coupling of the well-known Maclaurin series expansion and orthogonal Chebyshev polynomials, the governing differential equation with sinusoidal nonlinearity can be reduced to form a cubic-nonlinear equation, and supplementary condition with cosinoidal nonlinearity can also be simplified to be a polynomial integral equation. Analytical approximations to the resulting boundary condition problem are established by combining the Newton's method with the method of harmonic balance. Two approximate formulae for load along axis, potential strain for free hygrothermal expansion and periodic solution are established for small as well as large angle of rotation at the end of the beam. Illustrative examples are selected and compared to "reference" solution obtained by the shooting method to substantiate the accuracy and correctness of the approximate analytical approach.

In this paper, Fuzzy Self-organizing Neural Networks(FSONN) based on Fuzzy Neural Networks(FNN) is proposed to overcome some problems, such as the conflict between ovefitting and good generation, and low reliability. The proposed FSONN consists of FNN and SONN. Here, FNN is used as the premise part of FSONN and SONN is the consequnt part of FSONN. The FUN plays the preceding role of FSONN. For the fuzzy reasoning and learning method in FNN, Simplified fuzzy reasoning and backpropagation learning rule are utilized. The number of layers and the number of nodes in each layers of SONN that is based on the GMDH method are not predetermined, unlike in the case of the popular multi layer perceptron structure and can be generated. Also the partial descriptions of nodes can use various forms such as linear, modified quadratic, cubic, high-order polynomial and so on. In this paper, the optimal design procedure of the proposed FSONN is shown in each step and performance index related to approximation and generalization capabilities of model is evaluated and also discussed.
