  • An OrthoMTA compacter is made by machining a Ni-Ti alloy wire using tapered helix creep-feed grinding machines. This aim of this study is to find the optimal dressing conditions to sharpen the corner of a cubic boron nitride (CBN) wheel. On the basis of the results of various experiments, it is verified that the most important factors in dressing are the dressing depth and feeding method, whereas the feed rate has less importance for producing a smaller corner R value. The study also finds the optimum dressing depth to reduce the dressing time, a feeding speed and method to stabilize the machining, and the mesh grade for the CBN wheel to make the groove of the compacter deeper.

  • In this study, the experimental and analytic investigation with cold air system has been performed for improving the working environment of the conventional grinding fluid. Very simple cold air system was developed which could replace by the conventional grinding fluid system. The identification of heat of grinding Bone is very important for precision grinding. The experimental data was analysed to investigate the heat which was transferred to the workpiece. It was found that 45∼55% of the total energy for dry grinding, 22∼28% for wet grinding, and 32∼35% for cold air system are conducted to the workpiece in grinding with cubic boron nitride wheel. Cubic boron nitride wheel could reduce the residual stress and thermal demage comparing with aluminium oxide wheel, because cubic boron nitride wheel has very high extreme thermal conductivity.

  • Ultra-abrasives such as diamond and CBN have used to maintain accuracy and form deviation for superalloy etc. This study contains the dry cylindrical grinding of metals with Vitrified-bond CBN wheel and Resinoid-bond CBN wheel. For various condition of grinding speed, workpiece speed, grinding depth and feed speed of table, the grinding resistance, the surface roughness, and material removal are measured and discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate cutting characteristics and wear behavior in SCM440 steel with different cutting tools, CBN(Cubic Boron Nitride) and coated CBN. During the test coated CBN tool especially with TiAlN showed better wear resistance behavior than orginal CBN tools. In the interrupted cutting condition, axial groove affected tool surface with impact force during the turning operation. For advantageous turning parameter in the interrupted process it is recommendable that lower speed. Also surface roughness showed better behavior in the coated CBN tool conditions than normal CBN conditions. Mainly this is caused by reduced friction between material and tool surface with coated layer.

  • The use of CBN tool material has been greatil increased because of the superior metal cutting performance for the machining of hardened steels. This paper presents some experimental results on the ball endmilling of hardened steels. Three different hardnesses of STB-11 workpieces were machined using CBN ball endmills, and the machining charteristics including cutting forces, tool wear, and surface roughness of machined surface were compared. It has been found that the CBN ball endmill works better in the machining of harder workpieces. The microscopic examination explains that this unusual phenomenon is cause by the difference of microstructure of each workpieces.

  • Generally, the machinability of materials that have a good mechanical properties is poor. The material having a high strength, high toughness in high temperature and wear resistance, it is difficult to remove a chip from workpiece. STD11 and NAK80 are kinds of these materials and these materials can be used in many industrial fields. But it is limited in use because of high cost and poor machinability. In this experimental study, the cutting of STD11 and NAK80 were used to decide the machinability and the tool shape of CBN ball end mill. From the results, the CBN ball end mill is verified that the estimated cutting edge shape of rake angle 30 degree has consistent effect on the tool wear and cutting force.

  • The needs to machine hardened steels with high productivity and good surface integrity have been increased in the dies & molds industry. This paper presents some experimental results on the CBN ball endmilling for hardened tool steel. This investigation concerns on the effects of cutting speed and cutting fluids on the cutting performance such as cutting forces, tool wear, and surface finish. The wear of CBN ball endmill for each cutting conditions were also examined through the microscopic observation. It has been found out that the higher cutting speeds with cutting fluids result in better cutting performance.

  • This paper reports some experimental results of cylindrical external grinding using CBN wheels. Many experimental studies for surface grinding have been done, but not for the cylindrical grinding due to the difficulty of grinding force measurement. In this paper a new experimental device has been proposed for the grinding force measurement in cylindrical grinding. The cylindrical grinding experiments were carried out at various grinding conditions with several CBN grinding wheels. The experimental results indicate that the CBN wheels with smaller grains result in the higher grinding forces in both SCM415 and STD11 workpieces. The grinding forces of all wheels were proportional to the infeed speeds and the difference of each wheels was prominent at high infeed speed for SCM415.
