  • The selective sulphide precipitation of copper from sulphate solution containing nickel and cobalt was studied with adding $Na_{2}S$ solution. Precipitation efficiency of copper increased with raising pH of solution and increasing the amount of $Na_{2}S$ added and lowing its concentration. The increase in reaction time and temperature also improved the precipitation of copper. However, attempts to selectively precipitate copper met with limited success because of co-precipitation of nickel and cobalt. With adding $20\%$ $Na_{2}S$, 3 times equivalent of Cu, at pH 1.0 of solution, $25^{\circ}C$ and 30 minutes of reaction time, precipitation efficiencies of copper, nickel and cobalt were $94.1\%$, $4.3\%$ and $4.5\%$ respectively.

  • A study on the removal of silver(Ag) in copper electrolyte was carried out to produce high purity copper by using various method such as ion exchange resin, activated carbon adsorption, copper cementation with powder and wire, CuS precipitation. Parameters, such as reaction time, reaction temperature, addition amount etc. were investigated to determine the effective condition of silver removal. CuS precipitation and ion exchange using Lewatit TP214 was found to be effective. Especially, silver content in copper electrolyte was reduced from 10 ppm to less than 0.1 ppm by ion exchange with Lewatit TP214.

  • The phase of Cu,Zn,Al precursors strongly affects the activity of their final catalysts. Herein, the Cu,Zn,Al precursor was prepared by precipitation of $Al^{3+}$ onto primitive, amorphous Cu,Zn precipitate. This precursor turned out to be a phase mixture of zincian malachite and hydrotalcite in which the latter phase was less abundant compared to the co-precipitated precursor. The final catalyst derived from this precursor exhibited a little higher copper surface area and methanol synthesis activity than the co-precipitated counterpart. Therefore, the two precursor phases need to be mixed in an adequate proportion for the preparation of active $Cu/ZnO/Al_2O_3$ catalyst.

  • The major concern in the deep geological disposal of spent nuclear fuels include sulfide-induced corrosion and stress corrosion cracking of copper canisters. Sulfur diffusion into copper canisters may induce copper embrittlement by causing Cu2S particle formation along grain boundaries; these sulfide particles can act as crack initiation sites and eventually cause embrittlement. To prevent the formation of Cu2S along grain boundaries and sulfur-induced copper embrittlement, copper alloys are designed in this study. Alloying elements that can act as chemical anchors to suppress sulfur diffusion and the formation of Cu2S along grain boundaries are investigated based on the understanding of the microscopic mechanism of sulfur diffusion and Cu2S precipitation along grain boundaries. Copper alloy ingots are experimentally manufactured to validate the alloying elements. Microstructural analysis using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy demonstrates that Cu2S particles are not formed at grain boundaries but randomly distributed within grains in all the vacuum arc-melted Cu alloys (Cu-Si, Cu-Ag, and Cu-Zr). Further studies will be conducted to evaluate the mechanical and corrosion properties of the developed Cu alloys.

  • Scandium(Sc) in Al-Zn-Mg-Cu based Al alloy on precipitation phenomenon was compared to a 7001(Al-7.2%Zn-3.2%Mg-1.8%Cu) Al alloy. GP zone and ${\eta}^{\prime}$ phases were the main strengthening phases at low aging temperature under $100^{\circ}C$, but ${\eta}^{\prime}$ and $Al_3Sc$ phases were the main strengthening phases at high aging temperature above $1600^{\circ}C$ in Sc added 7000(Al-7.7%Zn-2.0%Mg-1.9%Cu-0.1%Zr) Al alloy. With the addition of 0.1%Sc in 7000 Al alloy, the activation energy for the GP zone, ${\eta}^{\prime}$ and ${\eta}$ phase decreased compared to the 7001 Al alloy. This result indicates that the Sc accelerated the precipitation for the GP zone, ${\eta}^{\prime}$ and ${\eta}$ phases in 7000 Al alloy. Al-7.7%Zn-2.0%Mg-1.9%Cu-0.1%Zr-0.1 Sc alloy has higher strength than 7001 Al alloy, which has high strength.

  • Effects of aging treatment on the microstructural evolution of a rapidly solidified Al-Li-Cu alloy were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). It was found that the precipitation sequence was: supersaturated solid solution ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ ${\rightarrow}$ metastable ${\delta}^{\prime}$ + stable precipitate $T_1$ ${\rightarrow}$ stable precipitates ${\delta}+T_1$. Two exothermic and two endothermic peaks are detected by DSC analysis. The two exothermic and endothermic peaks corresponded to ${\delta}^{\prime}$ and ${\delta}+T_1$ precipitation and dissolution reactions respectively. The enthalpy of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ precipitation decreased with increasing of aging temperature and time until the finishing point of precipitation. The activation energy for precipitation of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ was measured as 80KJ/mol and the energy for dissolution was 93KJ/mol. These values arc higher than those of AI-Li binary alloy. Peak hardness value (Hv 170) was obtamed at $210^{\circ}C$ for 1hr aging treatment which coincided with finishing point of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ precipitation.

  • The precipitation process in Cu-0.2 wt.%Cr-0.05 wt.%Zr alloys has been studied by electrical electrical resistivity measurements. The kinetics of precipitation could be well described by Johnson-Mehl-Avrami equation, $f(t)=1-\exp(-kt^n)$. The values of n were found to be in the range of 0.36~0.42 at first stage and 1.3~1.6 at second stage. The activation energy was determined by cross-cut method and was 80~89 kJ/mol. The value is similar to the energy for the migration of either a vacancy or a vacancy-solute complex through the lattice.

  • This paper examines the effect of nitride formation on formability for Cu bearing high strength extra low carbon (ELC) steel sheets. For this purpose, we have investigated the effect of addition of aluminium (Al) and boron (B) on texture and precipitation behavior of the ELC steel during continuous annealing. Mechanical properties and microstructures of the ELC steel sheets were analyzed as well using uni-axial tensile test, electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) technique and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) following pilot rolling and continuous annealing. It has been found that the addition of Al and B increases the precipitation of AlN and BN. What is more, the scavange of solute nitrogen is effective in increasing the formability of the ELC steels. In addition, the Al and B addition improves the aging property of the ELC steel.

  • Among the many maunfactured processes of producing multi filamentary composites, in situ process is widely used owing tv its simplicity and easyness of mass production. In this study, the mechanical and electromagnetic properties of Cu-Fe composite materials was investigated. The tensile strength of the Cu-Fe wires increased as the Fe content and reduction ratio were increased. The Cu-30 wt%Fe composites had the best properties in terms of figure merits compared to the other Cu-Fe composites made in this study or the commercially manufactured 6/1 ACSR cables of Cu cable. The coercivity was decreased by increasing Fe content, but the squareness was increased greatly. As increasing reduction ratio, the coercivity and squareness increased up to the maximum points, and then decreased. For example, the maximum values were obtained at $0.09mm{\phi}$ for Cu-30 wt%Fe composites and at $0.066mm{\phi}$ for Cu-45 wt%Fe composites. The magnetic property of Cu-Fe wires produced by precipitation treatment was higher than that of Cu-Fe wires produced by thermomechanical treatment. By annealing Cu-Fe wires after drawing process, the coercivity, remanence and squareness were improved.
