  • The purpose of this study is the evaluation of adsorption capacity of casts for heavy metals comparing with the activated carbon. The casts was obtained from vermicomposting of the mixed organic sludges which were generated from the treatment facilities for leather wastewater and cattle wastewater. The physico-chemical characteristics of cast was investigated. Also, the batch adsorption experiments of cast and activated carbon for heavy metals were carried out, and the results were analyzed by Freundlich isotherm. The buffering capacity to the acidic wastewater was founded in the cast, and the cation exchange capacity of cast impling adsorption capacity for soluble substances was evaluated as about 55me/100g. Those were implied that the cast have a large potential as a good adsorbent for soluble pollutants in wastewater. From the results of batch experiments, the removal efficiencies of tested various heavy metals including Pb, Cu, Cd, and Cr were very high value as 89-98% for the activated car-bon, and 80~95% for the casts except for Zn. The adsorption equilibriums for the two materials were achieved within 90 minutes. The order of preferable metals in the adsorption was found to be Pb>Cu>Cd>Cr>Zn on the cast and to be Pb>Cd>Cu>Cr>Zn on the activated carbon, respectively. From the above results, it might be con-cluded that cast is effectively available as a good adsorbent to treating the heavy metal bearing wastewater.

  • Hundred mineral deposits including W-Mo, Pb-Zn-Cu, fluorite and talc occur in the Cambre-Ordovician limestone contacting with the Cretaceous Muamsa and Wolak granitoids in the Susanri-Hwanggangri mineralized zone. In most mineral deposits characterized by metasomatic replacement, skarn and hydrothermal vein types, two distinct tendencies were found as W-Mo mineralization in or/and near granitoid batholith and ($Pb-Zn-Cu(CaF_2)$) mineralization which is gradually increased toward the batholith. W-Mo veins of extensive vein system occupy northly striking fractures whilst $Pb-Zn-Cu-CaF_2$ veins strike northeast or northwest. In this work, three representative lead-zinc-copper deposits choosing the Dangdu, Useog and Eoksu mines were dealt with in detail. Skarn ore bodies in the Dangdu mine were grouped into early diopside rich clinopyoxene-garnet, barren skarn and ore bearing late hedenbergite rich clinopyroxene-garnet skarn. Temperature and $X_{CO_2}$, obtained from hedenbergite-andradite-calcite-quartz mineral equilibria in the Dangdu ore deposits were $580{\sim}650^{\circ}C$ and 0.15~0.3, respectively. Fluid inclusien evidence in the Useog mine indicates that main stage mineralization temperature ranges from 224 to $389^{\circ}C$ with a salinity of 2~17 equivalent wt. percent NaCl. Sphalerites from the Dangdu and Useog mines have 16~17.7 mole percent in FeS which is relatively consistent to those of some other lend-zinc ore deposits in South Korea. Filling tcmjCerature of fluid inclusion frem the Eoksu mine shows deposition of ore within the temperature ranges from 237 to $347^{\circ}C$ and within the salinity ranges from 2.6 to 10.77 equivalent wt. percent NaCl.

  • New polynuclear poly(hexaaza macrocyclic) copper(II) complexes $[1](ClO_4)_{2n}{\cdot}(H_2O)_{2n}$, $[2](ClO_4)_{2n}{\cdot}(H_2O)_{2n}$, and $[3](ClO_4)_{2n}{\cdot}(H_2O)_{2n}$ have been prepared by the one-pot reaction of formaldehyde with ethylenediamine and 1,2-bis(2-aminoethoxy)ethane, 1,3-diaminopropane, or 1,6-diaminohexane in the presence of the metal ion. The polymer complexes contain fully saturated 14-membered hexaaza macrocyclic units (1,3,6,8,10,13-hexaazacyclotetradecane) that are linked by $N-(CH_2)_2-O-(CH_2)_2-O-(CH_2)_2-N$, $N-(CH_2)_3-N$, or $N-(CH_2)_6-N$ chains. The mononuclear complex $[Cu(H_2L^5)](ClO_4)_4$ ($H_2L^5$ = a protonated form of $L^5$) bearing two $N-(CH_2)_2-O-(CH_2)_2-O-(CH_2)_2-NH_2$ pendant arms has also been prepared by the metal-directed reaction of ethylenediamine, 1,2-bis(2-aminoethoxy)ethane, and formaldehyde. The polymer complexes were characterized employing elemental analyses, FT-IR and electronic absorption spectra, molar conductance, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Electronic absorption spectra of the complexes show that each macrocyclic unit of them has square-planar coordination geometry with a 5-6-5-6 chelate ring sequence. The polymer complexes as well as $[Cu(H_2L^5)]^{4+}$ are quite stable even in concentrated $HClO_4$ solutions. Synthesis and characterization of the polynuclear and mononuclear copper(II) complexes are reported.

  • Relation between fluid inclusions and mineralization has been studied for 30 granitoid specimens from 19 localities in South Korea. Polyphase inclusions are found in granitoid specimens of 9 localities. In the vicinities of 6 localities among them occurs any of W, Cu or Fe deposits of the vein-, stockwork-, skarn-or pegmatite-type. On the contrary, no ore deposit is reported near the granitoids characterized by no polyphase inclusion except only one locality. This fact implies that the occurrence of polyphase inclusions is a good indicator for such kinds of mineralization. Ores and country rocks of some of the deposits contain polyphase inclusions in their quartz crystals. The fact that many polyphase inclusions occur in granitoids and ore constituents suggests that highly saline hydrothermal solution played an important role for the formation of such kinds of deposits. On the contrary, the granite and the ore of the Mugug gold deposit have many fluid inclusions, but are free from the polyphase type.

  • This study aims to Improve the productivity in forming of flanged thrust engine bearings from two kinds of laminated sheet materials by integrating the forming processes or by reducing the number of the subsequent sizing and machining processes or by modifying the forming tools used. For steel-Al rolled blank, a design scheme for the one-step forming operation and the geometry of the tool set required is suggested and is verified its usefulness by the finite element simulation. And for steel-Cu sintered blank, the results of experiment and finite element analysis show that it is possible to improve the dimensional accuracy of formed products and to reduce the number of sizing processes just by modifying the shape and dimensions of initial blanks and flange forming dies, and by controlling the spring force.

  • The elemental composition of electro-deposited black Cr solar selective coatings before and after heating in air by using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) was investigated for optical property analysis. In addition, black Cr selective coating exposed by solar radiation for 5 months was compared with heated sample. SIMS investigation shows that $OH^+$ bearing ions were related to a near surface region of CrOH and CrO compound. The optical degradation of this coating after heating at $500^{\circ}C$ reveals that diffusion of the Cu and Ni elements in substrate material, the chemical interactions adjacent to the interface, and the interface width broadening.

  • Copper-zinc-bearing skarns of the Kasihan area developed at limestone layers in the sedimentary facies of the Late Oligocene Arjosari Formation. The skarns consist mainly of fine-grained, massive clinopyroxene-garnet, garnet, garnet-epidote, and epidote skarns. Most copper and zinc(-lead) ore mineralization occur in the clinopyroxene-garnet and garnetepidote skarn, respectively. Clinopyroxene occurs as a continuous solid solution of diopside and hedenbergite (from nearly pure diopside up to ${\approx}34$ mole percent hedenbergite), with a maximum 28.2 mole percent johannsenite component. The early and late pyroxenes of Kasihan skarns are diopsidic and salitic, respectively. They fall in the fields typical Cu- and Zn-dominated skarns, respectively. Garnet displays a relatively wide range of solid solution between grossular and andradite with up to ${\approx}2.0$ weight percent MnO. Garnet in early pyroxene-garnet skarn ranges from 49.1 to 91.5 mole percent grossular (mainly ${\geq}78$ mole % grossular). Garnets in late garnet and garnet-epidote skarns range from 2.8 to 91.4 mole percent grossular (mainly ${\geq}70$ mole % for garnet skarn). Epidote compositions indicate solid solutions of clinozoisite and pistacite varying from 65.8 to 76.2 mole percent clinozoisite. Phase equilibria indicate that skarn evolution was the result of interaction of water-rich fluids ($X_{CO_2}{\leq}0.1$) with original lithologies at ${\approx}0.5$ kb with declining temperature (early clinopyroxene-garnet and garnet skarn, ${\approx}450$ to $370^{\circ}C$; late garnet-epidote and epidote skarn, ${\approx}370$ to $300^{\circ}C$).

  • Limited geochemical components have been detected in fluid inclusions from ore deposits in south Korea by non-destructive and destructive analytical methods. Review of fluid inclusion studies display that the homogenization temperatures and salinities are in direct proportion. W and Cu ore deposits tend to show higher homogenization temperatures and salinities than Au ore deposits. Abundant halite-bearing fluid inclusions from the Eonyang Granite producing precious amethyst crystals may indicate that the initial fluid originated from magma is highly saline as shown by the quartz from the granite. Raman Laser microprobe detected $CO_2$, $N_2$ and $CH_4$ in a gold deposit, while these components are hardly detected from other deposits, even though destrucive analysis has dectected $CO_2$, $N_2$, $CH_4$, $H_2S$, and $SO_2$ from most of ore deposits. Individual fluid inclusion shows quite different components. These results suggest that large numbers of fluid inclusions should be analysed by Raman Laser microprobe to gain reliable data. Halite-bearing inclusion is hardly found in fluid inclusions from epithermal gold deposits in south Korea. Geochemistry, homogeinzation temperature and salinity of fluid inclusions may be useful to apply for exploration to find a concealed orebody.

  • The Manjang deposit developed in the Hwajeonri formation of the Okcheon metamorphic belt consists of the Central and Main orebodies of Cu-bearing hydrothermal vein type and the Western orebody of Fe-skarn type. This study focuses on the Cu mineralization of the Central and Main orebodies to compare with the genetic environments of the Western orebody previously studied. The Central orebody produced pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite as major ore minerals with vein texture, while the Main orebody contains pyrite, arsenopyrite, and chalcopyrite as major ore minerals with vein, massive, and brecciated texture. Sphalerite, galena, magnetite, ilmenite, rutile, cassiterite, wolframite, and stannite are also accompanied. Local occurrence of skarn is dominated by grossular and hedenbergite, reflecting the reduced condition of the skarnization. Geothermometries of sphalerite-stannite in the Central orebody and arsenopyrite-pyrite in the Main orebody indicate the formation temperature of $204-263^{\circ}C$ and $383-415^{\circ}C$, respectively. Sulfur fugacity of $10^{-6}-10^{-7}atm$. in the Main orebody decreased toward the Central orebody. Sulfur isotope compositions of sulfide minerals from the Central and Main orebodies are 4.6-7.9‰ and 4.3-7.0‰, respectively, reflecting magmatic origin with slight influence by host rock. Considering ore mineralogy, texture as well as physicochemical conditions, the Main and Central orebodies of hydrothermal Cu mineralization reflect the characteristics of proximal and distal type ore mineralization, respectively, related to hidden igneous rocks, and they were generated under different hydrothermal systems from the Fe-skarn Western orebody.
