  • We investigated the relation between the Cu-O bond length and the superconducting properties of $BaSnO_3$ (BSO)-added $GdBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (GdBCO) thin films by using extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. 4 wt.% $BaSnO_3$ (BSO) added $GdBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (GdBCO) thin films with varying thickness from $0.2{\mu}m$ to $1.0{\mu}m$ were fabricated by using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. The transition temperature ($T_c$) and the residual resistance ratio (RRR) of the GdBCO films increased with increasing thickness up to $0.8{\mu}m$, where the crystalline BSO has the highest peak intensity, and then decreased. This uncommon behaviors of $T_c$ and RRR are likely to be created by the addition of BSO, which may change the ordering of GdBCO atomic bonds. Analysis from the Cu K-edge EXAFS spectroscopy showed an interesting thickness dependence of ordering behavior of BSO-added GdBCO films. It is noticeable that the ordering of Cu-O bond and the transition temperature are found to show opposite behaviors in the thickness dependence. Based on these results, the growth of BSO seemingly have evident effect on the alteration of the local structure of GdBCO film.

  • Sr0.6Ca0.4CuO2 single crystal has been synthesized by flux method and characterized by the single crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound has the orthorhombic system and the space group is Cmcm(63), lattice parameters are a=3.4645Å, b=16.1417Å, c=3.8727Å. In the (Sr1-xCax)CuO2 compound the limit of Ca from substitution for Sr was determined by the change of bond length. For this, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDAX) and electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA) were used. From the change of Cu-O bond length as the Ca substitution, we concluded the limit of Ca incorporation Xca≒0.73.

  • We present the effects of temperature (between 10 K and 298 K) and of hole concentration on the frequency and intensity of characteristic phonons in polycrystalline $La_2CuO_4-related$ compounds using FT-IR spectros-copy. The influences of the concentration of carrier doped on the phonon modes are prominent in the IR spectra of $La_2CuO_4-related$ compounds. For $La_2-xSrxCuO_4({\chi}=$ 0.00, 0.03, 0.07, 0.10, and 0.15) and electrochemically (or chemically) oxidized $La_2CuO_4$, the intensities of the transverse oxygen mode around 680cm $-^1$ which cor-responds mainly to Cu-O(1) stretching vibration in the basal plane of CuO6 octahedron, are decreased and dis-appeared depending on the Sr-substitution rate and the amount of excess oxygen, while the longitudinal oxygen mode around 510 cm $-^1$ corresponding to the Cu-O(2) stretching in the basal plane of CuO6 octahedron are near-ly invariable. In particular, after two cycles of cooling-heating between 10 K and 298 K for these sample, the phonons around 680 cm $-^1$ are blue shif 13-15 cm $-^1$, while the phonons around 510 cm $-^1$ are nearly constant. The introduction of the charge carrier by doping would give rise to the small contraction of CuO6 oc-tahedron as Cu $^3+$ requires a smaller site than Cu $^2+$, which results in the shortening of the Cu-O(1) bond length and Cu-O(2) bond length with the increased La-O(2) bond length. These results in the frequency shift of the characteristic phonons. The IR spectra of $La_2Li0.5Cu0.5O_4$ which exhibits an insulator behavior despite the $Cu^3+$ of nearly 100%, corroborate our IR interpretations. The mode around 710 cm $-^1$ corresponding to Cu-O(1) stretching vibration is still strongly remained even at low temperature (10 K). Thus, we conclude that the con-duction electrons formed within $CuO_2$ planes of $La_2CuO_4-related$ superconductors screen more effectively the transverse oxygen breathing mode around 680 $cm-^1$ depending on the concentration of the doped charge carrier in $La_2CuO_4-related$ compounds, which might use as a superconductivity probe.

  • The effect of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) addition on the superconducting property of Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ ((Bi, Pb)-2223) polycrystalline samples was studied. LSMO (0.3 wt.% to 2.0 wt.%) added (Bi, Pb)-2223 samples were prepared by using a solid-state reaction method. The XRD analyses show that as the LSMO addition increases, the volume fraction of the Bi-2223 phase is gradually decreased. The critical temperature (Tc) exhibits a gradual decrease with a single transition as the LSMO amount increases up to 1.0 wt.%, but a further addition of LSMO induces an abrupt decrease of Tc with a dual transition. The analyses on the local structure of the CuO2 plane from the X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements showed that for the samples with low concentration of LSMO up to 1.0 wt.%, the Cu-O bond length and the CuO2 plane ordering do not degrade from the values of pure (Bi, Pb)-2223, while they get worsen with a further increase of LSMO addition. These results open up the possibility of LSMO as artificial pinning centers of the (Bi, Pb)-2223 system for power application.

  • We investigated the structural suitability of GdFeO3 (GdFO) as a buffer layer for the GdBa2xCu3O7-x (GdBCO) superconducting films. GdFO films with different thicknesses and GdBCO thin films were all prepared by using a pulsed laser deposition technique. The analyses of X-ray diffraction and EXAFS data indicates that the c-axis parameter increases and the Fe-O bond length decreases with the GdFO thickness due to the compressive stain induced by the lattice mismatch between GdFO and STO substrate and as a result, the Debye-Waller factor, an index of disorder in the local structure near the Fe-O bond, increases with the GdFO thickness. However, for the GdBCO/GdFO bilayer structure, the Debye-Waller factor decreases as the GdFO thickness increases indicating a diminished disorder by the structural coupling between GdFO and GdBCO. These results indicate that an appropriate thickness of GdFO is required to be utilized as a magnetic buffer layer for the GdBCO superconducting films.

  • $Sr_2Ru_{1-x}Cu_xO_{4-y}(0.0{\le}x{\le}0.5)$ compounds were prepared using a conventional solid state reaction. Based on the Rietveld refinements of X-ray diffraction results, it is revealed that $Sr_2Ru_{1-x}Cu_xO_{4-y}$ compounds are the single phases with K2NiF4 type tetragonal system in the range of 0=x=0.3, while the mixed phases of$Sr_2RuO_4$ and $Sr_2CuO_3$ in the range of $0.4{\le}x{\le}0.5$. By means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the valence states of Ru and Cu in $Sr_2Ru_{1-x}Cu_xO_{4-y}$, have been confirmed to 4+ and 2+, respectively. The bond length difference between $Ru-O_1 ({\times}4)\;and\;Ru-O_2 ({\times}2)\;in\;RuO_6$ octahedron is gradually decreased with increasing Cu content in $Sr_2Ru_{1-x}Cu_xO_{4-y}$, which results in the lower c/a ratio. So, it might be assured that the variation of local symmetry of $RuO_6$ octahedron is very closely related to the transporting property of $Sr_2Ru_{1-x}Cu_xO_{4-y}$ compounds. The behavior of resistivity discloses that the metallic property in $Sr_2RuO_4$ changes into the semiconducting one in proportion to the Cu content in $Sr_2Ru_{1-x}Cu_xO_{4-y}$.

  • The crystal structure of N-acetyl-L-cysteine, $C_5H_9NO_3S,$ has been determined from three dimensional photographic intensity data $(CuK{\alpha}$ radiation) by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. There is one formula unit in the triclinic unit cell with a = 7.04(3), b = 5.14(2), c = 8.25(3) ${\AA}$, ${\alpha}$ = 106(2), ${\beta}$ = 51(1), ${\gamma}$ = 124(2)$^{\circ}$ and space group P$_1$, The structure was solved by the direct method and refined by the full matrix least-squares method. The final R value is 12.3% for 629 observed reflections. The C-carboxyl group and the N-acetyl group are very neary planar. The molecule appears to form with neighboring molecules a hydrogen bond, $O-H{\cdot}{\cdot}{\cdot}O(3)$ of length 2.59${\AA}$.
