The electrochemical characteristics of Al-Si casting alloys (Al-10%Si, Al-9%Si, Al-7%Si) in 3.5% NaCl solution at room temperature was studied using potentiodynamic techniques. The electrochemical values of corrosion potential($E_c$), corrosion current density($I_c$) and corrosion rate(mpy) were examined. The Al-Si alloys had several compounds such as $Mg_2Si$, ${\pi}$-$Al_8Si_6Mg_2Fe$ and $Al_2CuMg$ which could affect corrosion resistance significantly. The potentiodynamic polarization curve exhibited typical active behavior in anodic polarization curve. The major corrosion mechansim for the Al-Si alloys were pitting and grain boundary corrosion. As increasing Si and Cu contents, their corrosion resistance was decreased.

Shape Memory Alloys have attracted the interest of a great number of researchers in the world, and Mexico is not the exception. Research in this field started ten years ago, and is actually an active line covering the classical Cu-based and Ti-Ni alloys, but also the new Fe-based alloys. Although more basic studies have been performed at the present time, interest for applied research and technological goals is increasing. In this work we present a series of studies carried on these Shape Memory Alloys by the groups in Mexico, and explain what the interest of our groups are in the next future in this are of the Materials Science. Interdisciplinary work has been necessary in the characterization of the different alloys, and multiple techniques have been used, like Mossbauer spectroscopy, thermoelectric power, electron microscopy, ultrasound techniques, neutron and x-ray diffraction, calorimetry, among others. Collaboration With other groups in Europe and in the United States have become highly useful and productive, and some examples of such activities are also reported.

A series of multicomponent $Zr_{0.8}Ti_{0.2}Mn_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{1-x}Fe_{x}$ (x=0.00, 0.08, 0.15, 0.22, and 0.30) alloys are prepared and their oystal structure and P-C-T curves are examined. The electrochemical properties of these allqys such as activation conditions, discharge capacity, cycling performance are also investigated. $Zr_{0.8}Ti_{0.2}Mn_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{1-x}Fe_{x}$ (x=0.00, 0.08, 0.15, 0.22 and 0.30) have the C14 Laves phase hexagonal structure. The electrode was activated by the hot-charging treatment. The best activation conditions were the current density 120 mA/g and the hot-charging time 12h at $80^{\circ}C$ in the case of the alloy with x=0.00. The discharge capacity increased rapidly until the fourth cycle and then decreased. The discharge capacity increased again from the 13th cycle, arriving at 234 mAh/g at the 50th cycle. The discharge capacily just after activation decreases with the increase in the amount of the substituted Fe but the cycling performance is improved. The discharge capacity after activation of the alloy with x=0.00 is 157 mAh/g at the current density 120 mA/g. $Zr_{0.8}Ti_{0.2}Mn_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{0.85}Fe_{0.15}$ is a good composition with a medium quantity of discharge capacities and a good cycling performance. The ICP analysis of the electrolyte for these electrodes after 50 charge-discharge cycles shows that the concentrations of V and Zr are relatively high. Another series of multicomponent $Zr_{0.8}Ti_{0.2}Mn_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{0.85}M_{0.15}$ (M = Fe, Co, Cu, Mo and Al) alloys are prepared. They also have the C14 Laves phase hexagonal structure. The alloys with M = Co and Fe have relatively larger hydrogen storage capacities. The discharge capacities just after activation are relatively large in the case of the alloys with M = Al and Cu. They are 212 and 170 mAh/g, respectivety, at the current density 120mA/g. The $Zr_{0.8}Ti_{0.2}Mn_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{0.85}Co_{0.15}$ alloy is the best one with a relatively large discharge capacity and a good cycling performance.
The effect of annealing on the magnetic properties and the microstructures of the amorphous $Fe_{76-x}Cu_1Mo_xSi_{14}B_9$(x=2,3) alloys were investigated. When annealed at 500${^{\circ}C}$ for 1hr, $8{\sim}9{\times}10^3$ of the effective permeability and 3~4 A/m of the coercive force were achieved upon crystallization to $\alpha$-Fe phase. And the average diameter of the $\alpha$-Fe grains was about 20nm. For the nanovrystalline ferromagnets. the fine grain size is the important requirement to obtain a good soft magnetic property. In this work, in order to get the finer grain size of $\alpha$-Fe phase, two-step annealing treatment was given. That is, following the low-temperature at $400{^{\circ}C}$ for 1~3hr, the high-temperature annealing at $500{^{\circ}C}$ for 1hr was carried out. As the low-temperature annealing time increased, the effective permeability increased to $1.2{\sim}1.7{\times}10^4$ and the coercive force decreased to about 2 A/m. And the grain size was observed to be smaller than 10nm. The increased permeability and the decreased coercive force were attributed to the reduced average crystalline anisotropy by the refinement of $\alpha$-Fe(Si) grains.
Several aluminum based alloys were fabricated by a twin roll strip casting mill. As-cast microstructures and microsegregations of these aluminum alloys were investigated by means of optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and electron probe micro analysis. Clear distinction on microsegregation among the alloy systems was observed, that is, A1235 and A8011 alloys showed diffused segregation in the middle of the strip, while A3003 and A5086 alloys revealed a centerline segregation consisted of lamellar structure. Above center line segregation was resulted from enrichment of the alloying elements such as Mn, Fe, Cu, Si and eutictic reaction in central region of the alloy strip.

In this study, corrosion behaviors of Ti-xNb alloys for biomaterials. The Ti-xNb binary alloys contained from 10 wt. % to 50 wt. % contents were manufactured by vacuum arc-melting furnace. Microstructures of the alloys were examined by optical microscope (OM) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). In order to identify the phase constitutents of the Ti-xNb alloys, X-ray diffractometer (XRD) with a Cu K radiation was used. The corrosion behaviors were investigated using potentiostat (Model2273,EG & GCo, USA) in NaCl solution at $(36.6{\pm}1.0)^{\circ}C$.

T hydrogen absorption-desorption behavior induced by thermal or hydrogen pressure cycling in a closed system was observed in hydrogen storage alloys, $(La-R-Mm)Ni_{4.5}Fe_{0.5}$, $MmNi_4Fe_{0.85}Cu_{0.15}$ and $(Ce-F-Mm)Ni_{4.7}Al_{0.2}Fe_{0.1}$. Thereby (La-R-Mm), Mm and (Ce-F-Mm) refer to La-rich mischmetal, mischmetal and Ce-free mischmetal respectively. As the results, it is found that the alloy stabilities during thermal cycling varies with alloy composition change. The highest stability occurs in $MmNi_4Fe_{0.85}Cu_{0.15}$ and the lowest stability in $(La-R-Mm)Ni_{4.5}Fe_{0.5}$. Comparing hydrogen pressure cycling with thermal cycling, pressure cycling causes severer degradation of the alloy $(Ce-F-Mm)Ni_{4.7}Al_{0.2}Fe_{0.1}$ than thermal cycling. When the 1500 times-cycled alloy is annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ for 3hrs under 1 atm of hydrogen pressure the hydrogen storage capacity is recovered only partially but not completely to the initial capacity. The amount of capacity loss after annealing is larger in the hydrogen pressure cycled samples than in the thermal cycled, suggesting an incoming of impure gas during hydrogen pressure cycling.

A thorough study about the influences of Mn substitution for Fe on the microstructure and magnetic characteristics of $Fe_{73.5-x}Mn-{x}Si_{13.5}B_{9}Nb_{3}Cu_1$ (x = 1, 3, 5) alloys prepared by the melt-spinning technique has been performed. Nanocomposites composed of nanoscale $(Fe,Mn)_{3}Si$ magnetic phase embedded in an amorphous matrix were obtained by annealing their amorphous alloys at $535^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The addition of Mn causes a slight increase in the mean grain size. The Curie temperatures of the initial amorphous phase and of the nanocrystals phase decreased, while the Curie temperature of the remaining amorphous phase remained nearly constant with increasing Mn content. Soft magnetic properties of the crystallized samples have been significantly improved by a proper thermal treatment. Accordingly, the giant magnetoimpedance effect is observed and ascribed to the increase of the magnetic permeability, and the decrease of the coercivity of the samples. The increased magnetic permeability is resulted from a decrease in the magnetocrystalline anisotropy and saturation magnetostriction.
In this study, Cu-2.5at.%Ni-1at.%Si alloys were fabricated by horizontal continuous casting system to improve the electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of Cu-Ni-Si alloy. Withdrawing speed was changed with 50, 100, 150 and 200 mm/min for the optimum manufacturing condition. Microstructure was observed using OM, FE-SEM and TEM. Electrical conductivity was measured by 4-point probe method and mechanical properties were tested. A horizontal continuous cast thin slab had sound macro and micro structures with partly crystallized structures. Electrical resistivity decreased with increasing annealing temperature from 250 to $850^{\circ}C$, with increasing annealing temperature The maximum hardness and tensile strength were Hv 130, 610 MPa at $550^{\circ}C$, respectively. With changing withdrawing speed from 50 to 150 mm/min, hardness, tensile strength, yield strength and elongation were Hv 60-65, 210-230 MPa, 65-75 MPa and 40-50%, respectively.

CuSnZn electroplating was investigated as alternative to Ni plating. Evaluation of electrolyte and plating process was performed to control physical characteristics of the film, and to collect practical data for application. Hull-cell test was conducted for basic comparison of two commercialized products and developed product. Based on hull-cell test results, long term test of three electrolytes was performed. Various analysis on long term tested electrolyte and samples have been done. Reliable and practical data was collected using FE-SEM (FEI, Sirion), EDX (ThermoNoran SIX-200E), ICP Spectrometer (GBC Scientifi c, Integra XL), FIB (FEI, Nova600) for anlysis. Physical analysis and reliability test of the long term tested film were also carried out. Through this investigation plating time, plating speed, electrolyte composition, electrolyte metal consumption, hardness and corrosion resistance has been compared. This set of data is used to predict and control the chemical composition of the film and modify the physical characteristics of the CuSnZn alloy.
