  • The characteristics of fluidization in a centrifugal fluidized bed with a 184 mm inner diameter, 50 mm width of the gas distributor was observed by photographs and experimental works using Cu-ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts with a mean diameter of $26{\mu}m$ and $32{\mu}m$ as bed materials at a rotor at 400rpm and 600rpm. Under these experimental ranges, the experimental results clearly showed the effects of the number of rotation of the rotor on the behavior of bubbles in the centrifugal fluidized bed. As the number of rotations of the rotor increased, the gas velocity at which bubbles begin to be formed also increased but the diameter of the bubbles decreased. In addition, the size of the bubbles in the centrifugal fluidized bed were relatively smaller than those in the conventional bubbling fluidized bed.

  • Most of the work reported concerned the semi-solid processing of low melting point alloys, and in particular light alloys of aluminum and magnesium. The purpose of this paper is to develop a semi-solid microstructure of Cu alloys using electromagnetic stirring applicable for squirrel cage rotor of induction motor. The size of primary solid particle and the degree of sphericity as a function of the variation in cooling rate, stirring speed, and holding time were observed. By applying electromagnetic stirring, primary solid particles became finer and rounder relative to as-cast sample. As the input frequency increased from 30 to 40 Hz, particle size decreased. The size of primary solid particle was found to be decreased with increasing cooling rate. Also, it decreased with stirring up to 3 minutes but increased above that point. The degree of sphericity became closer to be 1 with hold time. Semi-solid microstructure of Cu alloys, one of the high melting point alloys, could be controlled by electromagnetic stirring.

  • The feasibility of an oil-free, motor-driven, two-stage centrifugal compressor supported by air bump bearings is investigated. This centrifugal compressor is driven by a 75 kW motor at an operating speed of 39,000 RPM, and a pressure ratio of the compressor is set up to 4. The analysis is performed by using bearing equilibrium position, heaving stillness, Campbell diagram, unbalance response, and stability. It is demonstrated in this paper that air bump bearings can be adopted well to an oil-free, motor-driven, centrifugal compressor. Specially, Cu-coated bump bearings have enough damping force to reduce a synchronous unbalance for rigid modes of the two-stage compressor. Futhermore, this concept may be applied to the flexible rotor system such as high speed turbomachinery with a super critical speed.

  • This thesis studied that seven kinds of residual elements(inclusions) had influenced on fracture toughness($K_{IC}$) obtained by Begley-Logsdon and Rolfe-Novak model equation using tensile an d impact test data of I%CrMoV HP(high pressure) rotor steel. $K_{IC}$ design curve of ASME and fracture surface by SEM were also considered, obtained results are summarized as follows $K_{IC}$ was linearly increased with increase of temperature, effect of the inclusions was significantly over FATT. $K_{IC}$ at lower shelf temperature was quantitatively related to yield strength and was agreed well with Begley's equation. It was difficult to determine $K_{IC}$ because of specimen size and tester capacity at upper shelf temperature, but for this view point Rolfe-Novak's equation was useful. The degree of brittle fracture was dependent on FATT fundamentally, adding S, Sb to matrix decreased impact energy and adding Cu, As increased yield(tensile) strength, and the influence of the others minority inclusion was comparatively insignificant.

  • Friction characteristics of automotive friction materials containing different metallic fibers rubbing against Al-MMC and cast iron disk specimens have been studied. Friction materials containing aluminum, copper or low steel carbon fiber were tested. Friction tests were composed of three different phases to investigate the effect of temperature, pressure, speed, and drag time. The results showed that the friction material containing Al fibers has lower friction force and wear amount than the others with Cu or Steel fiber. On the other hand, the wear of friction material was severe in the case of using Al-MMC rotors. These results showed that the thermal decomposition of solid lubricants (and organic components), formation of transfer layer, and SiC particles in the AI-MMC rotor play crucial roles in determining the friction characteristics.
