  • The standardized activated sludge for the biodegradation test of anion surfactants has been produced from the collected microorganisms in the soil and the wastewaters treatment plant. The activated sludge was kept under control of the pH, dissolved oxygen, microorganisms and inoculated the basal medium flasks with LAS and LAS mixed with heavy metals [Cd(II), Cu(II), Zn(II)]. Based of results, the inhibition effect(%) of heavy metals in LAS biodegradation were 1. All 1% when LAS 30mg/l-Cd(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) 0.1mg/l, respectively 2. All 1${\sim}$10% when LAS 30mg/l-Cd(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) 1mg/l, respectively 3. All 10${\sim}$40% when LAS 30mg/l-Cd(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) 10mg/l, respectively 4. All 30${\sim}$65% when LAS 30mg/l-Cd(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) 100mg/l, respectively And toxicity order of heavy metals to the microorganisms in LAS biodegradation were Cd>Cu>Zn in low concentration(0.1${\sim}$1mg/l)and Cd>Zn>Cu in high concentration(10${\sim}$100mg/l).

  • Algal biomass was used in our study in order to remove some metals. After packing of 40~60 mesh algae powder into column for use of metal adsorbent, the metal solution of 1mL/min of flow rate was eluted to adsorb in algae. More amount of Cu(II) or Zn(II) ion in green algae, Ulva pertusa Kjellman than in brown algae, Sargassum horneri (Turner) C. Agarch were adsorbed and Cu(II) ion was more adsorbed in both algae than Zn(II) ion. Recovery of metal from algae is showing higher in acidic or neutral than in alkalic conditions. Cu(II) ion is recovered relatively higher than Zn(II) ion in our system.

  • This study was focused on experiment for the separation and concentration process of Cu(II), Zn(II) solution with the variation of applied pressure and concentration using reverse osmosis plate and frame modules. Rejection coefficient and degree of concentration for Cu(II) component using single and multi-stage reverse osmosis process were showed 96.3~97.8%, 0.044~0.191(in single-stage), 96.3~98.4%, 0.400~2.264(in multi-stage) within the range of experimental condition, respectively. Those of Zn(II) were 93.3~97.1%, 0.019~0.395(in single-stage), 96.3~98.2%, 0.365~1.454(in multi-stage), respectively. Degree of concentration of multi-stage were higher than those of single-stage. Heavy metal[Cu(II), Zn(II)] separation was very efficient in using reverse osmosis plate and frame type modules. Separation efficiency for a mixed solution Cu(II) and Zn(II) was higher than those of each one of Cu(II) and Zn(II).

  • The tridentate schiff base, salicylidene imino-o-thiolbenzene, has been synthetized from salicylaldehyde and o-amino thiolbenzene by Duff reaction. The schiff base has been reacted with Cu(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II), to form new complexes; Cu(II)$[C_{13}H_9ONS]{\cdot}3H_2O$, Ni(II)$[C_{13}H_9ONS]{\cdot}3H_2O,\;Zn(II)[C_{13}H_9ONS]{\cdot}3H_2O$ It appears that the Cu(II)-complex has tetra-coordinated configuration with the schiff base and one molecule of water, while the Ni(II) and Zn(II)-complexes have hexacoordinated configuration with the schiff base and three molecules of water. The mole ratio of tridentate schiff base ligand to metals was 1:1. These complexes have been identified by infrared spectra, visible spectra, TGA, DTA and elemental analysis.

  • The tetradentate schiff base ligand, N,N'-bis(salicylaldehyde)-m-phenylenediimine has been prepared from salicylaldehyde and m-phenylenediamine by Duff-reaction. The schiff base ligand has been reacted with Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), and Zn(II) to form new complexes; Cu(II)$[C_{20}H_{14}O_2N_2]{\cdot}2H_2O, Ni(II)[C_{20}H_{14}O_2N_2]{\cdot}2H_2O, Co(III)[C_{20}H_{14}O_2N_2]{\cdot}2H_2O and Zn(II)2[C_{20}H_{14}O_2N_2]{\cdot}4H_2O$. It seems to be that the Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) complexes have hexacoordinated configuration with the schiff base and two molecules of water, while Zn(II) complex has tetracoordinated configuration with the schiff base and four molecules of water. The mole ratio of tetradentate schiff base ligand to Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) are 1:1 but to Zn(II) is 1:2. These complexes have been identified by visible spectra, infrared spectra, T.G.A. and elemental analysis.

  • The dipole moments for square planar and tetrahedral $[M(II)N_2S_2]$ type complexes are calculated, using the expansion method for spherical harmonics [M(II) = Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) or Zn(II)]. The calculated values of the dipole moments for these complexes are in the range of the experimental values. The possible structures for these complexes in benzene solution are discussed on the basis of the calculated dipole moments and the the magnetic properties.

  • In this research, biological uptake of heavy metals(Cd(II), Cu(II), Zn(II)) was measured under various conditions ; pH, initial heavy metal concentration, temperature, contact time and the amount of biomass through batch test. From this research, it was found that heavy metals might be removed through adsorption and accumulation in activated sludge process. Heavy metals were highly concentrated by microbial floc in activated sludge. Also, the removal efficiency was reached up to 80~90% within and after 1 hour the increase of removal efficiency was minimal. The order of accumulation efficiency was Cu(II)>Zn(II)>Cd(II), and the bonding strength between heavy metals and microbial floc may be expressed in order of Cu(II)>Zn(II)>Cd(II).

  • The several fundamental parameters on the solvent extraction of Co(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) with dithizone were investigated. The value of $K_{a1}/K_p$ of dithizone(at $25^{\circ}C$) between an aqueous phase and a chloroform was found to be $4.72{\times}10^{-11}$. And the mole ratios of metal ion to dithizone in its metal complexes were determined by mole ratio method. The extractibilities(%) for metal-dithizone chelates were obtained from the extraction equilibria of metal-dithizone complexes between an aqueous phase and a chloroform as follows. Co(II) : 92.3% at pH 8.0 : Cu(II) : 97.1% at pH 4.0 and Zn(II) : 99.0% at pH 7.0. And also, in optimum experimental conditions the extraction constants of Co(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) were examined.

  • Neomycin coupled to a polymer matrix via a metal linker was prepared and evaluated for prolonging antibacterial activity. Microcrystallized cellulose was chemically modified to cellulose xanthate(MCX) to afford metal binding sites. MCX was treated with Cu(II), Fe(III) or Zn(II) followed by reaction with neomycin (Ne). The release of Ne from MCX-Zn(II)-Ne was investigated and its activity duration was measured by ditch plate method. The amount of metal bound to MCX was 0.36 mmol/g matrix, 0.26 mmol/g matrix and 0.56 mmol/g matrix for Cu(II), Zn(II) and Fe(III), respectively. Ne bound to MCX-metal chelates was 0.006 mmol, 0.07 mmol and 0.01 mmol per g MCX for Cu(II), Zn(II) and Fe(III), respectively. The Ne release from MCX-Zn(II)-Ne was sustained even after seven washes, whereas Ne from MC/Zn(II)/Ne mixture was almost completely released in two washes. Antibacterial activity was prolonged with MCX-Zn(II)-Ne and MCX-Fe(III)-Ne, but not with MCX-Cu(II)-Ne when compared with that of free Ne. Taken together, these results suggest that neomycin coupled to MCX via a proper metal linker has a potential as a polymeric antibacterial agent with sustained activity.

  • The study was carried out on the biochemical characters of Cd-BP(II) after isolation and purification of the protein from the liver of rat ip injection with Cd. A continued study has been doing whether Cd-BP(II) could be induced by Cd or by the other metals such as Zn and Cu. Antisera were made against the antigen of Cd-BP(II) from New Zealand white rabbits. We carried out g-globulin purification, then Ouchterlony test and gel immunodiffusion test. Cd-BP(II) was also found in normal tissues of rat. It was induced up to a considerable level by Cd, whose induced level was higher than that Cu or Zn treatment. The level of induction by Cu or Zn pretreatment plus Cd treatment was lower than that by single treatment of Cu or Zn. Such a result was presumably related to the Cd toxicity.
