  • Bellows is used to control temperature of a Joule-Thomson micro cryocooler. It is made of Nickelcobalt alloy that retains mechanical properties from cryogenic temperature to temperature of 570K. The geometry of bellows is an axisymmetric shell and Nitrogen with high pressure was charged at temperature of 293K. During cool-down process, the pressure and volume of Nitrogen are changed and must be satisfied with state equation. At cryogenic temperature, Nitrogen can exist as a part liquid and part vapor. Pressure-density-temperature behavior under this vaporliquid phase equilibrium is closely given by the Modified-Benedict-Webb-Rubin(MBWR) state equation. To evaluate deformation of bellows for temperature change, the numerical calculation of the volume within bellows and finite element analysis of bellows under internal pressure were iteratively performed until MBWR state equation is satisfied. The numerical results show that deformation of the bellows can be analyzed by the present method in a wide range of temperature including cryogenic temperature.

  • Measuring an exact amount of remaining cryogenic liquid propellant under microgravity condition is one of the important issues of rocket vehicle. A Pressure-Volume-Temperature (PVT) gauging method is attractive due to its minimal additional hardware and simple gauging process. In this paper, PVT gauging method using liquid nitrogen is investigated under microgravity condition with parabolic flight. A 9.2 litre metal cryogenic liquid storage tank containing approximately 30% of liquid nitrogen is pressurized by ambient temperature helium gas. During microgravity condition, the inside of the liquid tank becomes near-isothermal condition within 1 K difference indicated by 6 silicon diode sensors vertically distributed in the middle of the liquid tank. Helium injection with higher mass flow rate after 10 seconds of the waiting time results in successful measurements of helium partial pressure in the tank. Average liquid volume measurement error is within 11% of the whole liquid tank volume and standard deviation of errors is 11.9. As a result, the applicability of PVT gauging method to liquid propellant stored in space is proven with good measurement accuracy.

  • Metal 3D printing is utilized in various industrial fields due to its advantages, such as fewer restrictions on production shape and reduced production time and cost. Existing research on 3D printing metal materials focused on changes in material properties depending on manufacturing conditions and was mainly conducted in a room temperature environment. In order to apply metal 3D printing products to cryogenic applications, research on the properties of materials in cryogenic environments is necessary but still insufficient. In this study, we evaluate the properties of stainless steel (STS) 316L and CuCr1Zr manufactured by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) in a cryogenic environment. CuCr1Zr is a precipitation hardening alloy, and changes in material properties were compared by applying various heat treatment conditions. The mechanical properties of materials manufactured using the LBPF method are evaluated through tensile tests at room temperature and cryogenic temperature (77 K), and the thermal properties are evaluated by deriving the thermal conductivity of CuCr1Zr according to various heat treatment conditions. In a cryogenic environment, the mechanical strength of STS 316L and CuCr1Zr increased by about 150% compared to room temperature, and the thermal conductivity of CuCr1Zr after heat treatment increased by about 6 to 10 times compared to before heat treatment at 40 K.

  • To acquire the safety along with durability of mechanical machinery products, we should consider the structural mechanics such as stress, deformation and dynamic vibration characteristics and identify those important aspects in the stage of preliminary design engineering. This cryogenic ball valve is used to transfer the liquified natural gas which temperature is $-196^{\circ}C$, supplied pressure is $168kg/cm^2$. For the cryogenic ball valve, the assurance of structural integrity and operability are essential to meet not only normal, abnormal loading conditions but also functionality during a seismic event. In this thesis, analytical approach and results using finite element analysis and computational method are herein presented to evaluate the aspects of structural integrity along with operability of cryogenic ball valve. In this study, we designed the high pressure cryogenic ball valve that accomplishes zero leakage by elastic seal at normal temperature and metal seal at high temperature.

  • This research aims to measure mechanical tensile properties of CFRP composites for cryogenic tank material. Through the cryogenic chamber, tensile tests are peformed under cryogenic temperature for graphite/epoxy fabric specimen aged at $-150^{\circ}C$ for 30hrs with load and graphite/epoxy unidirectional specimen 3-cycled from RT to $-100^{\circ}C$ with load. For graphite/epoxy fabric specimen, tensile modulus showed to increase after aging at cryogenic temperature(CT) while to decrease after aging at room temperature(RT) and tensile strength is more decreased after CT-aged than at RT-aged. For graphite/epoxy unidirectional specimen, tensile modulus was almost not changed after 3-cycling but strength showed the trend of decrease as increase the number of cycling.

  • The cryogenic system for 6.6 kV/200 A inductive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) was developed at Yonsei university in 2003. The sub-cooled nitrogen cryogenic system could be applied to not only SFCL but also many other applied high-Tc superconducting (HTS) devices like superconducting motor, superconducting generator and superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES). Generally, the cooling capacity of GM-cryocooler depends on the load temperature. Therefore it is necessary to perform the cooling capacity test at no load condition to calculate the exact cooling power and heat load of cryogenic system. In this research, the cooling capacity test of GM-cryocooler was executed and the heat load of developed cryogenic system was calculated. The long run operation test results of sub-cooled nitrogen cryogenic system were successful in pressure and temperature condition. Moreover, the design and fabrication method of cryogenic system were introduced and the test results were described.

  • The characteristic test for gage factors of temperature self-compensated strain gages at cryogenic temperature is presented. By joining the international round robin test on electrical strain gages at cryogenic temperatures, the gage factors of three kinds of widely-used strain gages are obtained at the room temperature, the temperatures of liquid nitrogen and liquid helium. The calibration system which produce precise bending strain is by mechanical loading at cryogenic temperature. This paper also presents the creep characteristic of strain gages at maximum strain level.

  • In power cables as one of the important power applications adopting HTS tapes, a good insulation should be kept at its optimum performance. As an insulation material for superconducting device applications, polypropylene laminated paper (PPLP) is now widely used instead of the conventional Kraft paper. In addition to its dielectric property, the insulation material should also possess superior mechanical property at cryogenic temperatures and operability that is necessary for the insulation winding process. This study aims to evaluate the mechanical property of the PPLP material at ambient and cryogenic temperatures. At cryogenic temperature, the failure stress of PPLP increased significantly as compared with that at ambient temperature. The failure stress at both temperatures depended upon the sample orientation to the load application.

  • We investigated the cryogenic temperature plasticity of a bulk amorphous alloy. Experiments showed that as temperature decreases, the plasticity of the alloy increases, such that the alloy exhibited ~20% of plastic strain when tested at $-196^{\circ}C$. This enhancement in the plasticity at cryogenic temperatures was associated with the formation of abundant shear bands distributed uniformly over the entire surface of the sample. Nonetheless, the serrations, the characteristic feature of the plastic deformation of amorphous alloys, were unclear at $-196^{\circ}C$. In this study, both the enhanced plasticity and the unclear serrations exhibited by the amorphous alloy at cryogenic temperatures were clarified by exploring shear banding behaviors in the context of the velocity and the viscosity of a propagating shear band.

  • The conduction cooling HTS SMES magnet is operated in cryogenic temperature. The insulation design at cryogenic temperature is an important element that should be established to accomplish miniaturization that is a big advantage of HTS SMES. However, the behaviors of insulators for cryogenic conditions in air or vacuum are virtually unknown. Therefore, we need active research and development of insulation concerning application of the conduction cooling HTS SMES. Specially, this paper was studied about high vacuum and cryogenic temperature breakdown and flashover discharge characteristics between cryocooler and magnet-coil. The breakdown and surface flashover discharge characteristics were experimented at cryogenic temperature and vacuum. Also, we were experimented about mechanical properties of 4-point bending test. From the results, we confirmed that about research between cryocooler and magnet-coil established basic data in the insulation design.
