  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the charging gas effect on the resonance and performance characteristics of the linear compressor for small scale FPFD Stirling refrigerator. To ensure high performance of FPFD type Stirling refrigerator, the operating frequency of the refrigerator should be around the natural frequency of compressor. The gas spring effect which is induced from Pressure change in cylinder due to motion of pistons has significant effect on the natural frequency of the compressor. The numerical results show the linear compressor has high natural frequency when the charging pressure of working fluid is high and the stroke of compressor, current, input power and efficiency of compressor were shown with different operating conditions.

  • In our newly proposed cryogenic systems for HTS transformer, liquid nitrogen is subcooled by copper sheets extended from coldhead of cryocooler. Since the shape of copper sheets has been given by the shape of HTS windings and electrical restriction, the thickness of copper sheets is the main parameter to determine operating temperature in HTS windings. Temperature distributions between windings and coldhead are investigated by heat transfer analysis, from which the thickness of copper sheets to maintain every part of windings below 66 K is calculated. The effects of the amount of AC loss on the temperature distributions in cooling system are also presented.

  • SMES consists of superconducting magnet, power converter and cryostat and HTS current lead. The prototype cryostat with HTS current leads and refrigerators was designed and manufactured for micro-SMES. HTS current lead with cryocooler was measured the temperature rise under dc current. The cryostat was evaluated the helium boil-off and mechanical stress during transfer and vibration test. These results will be applied to develope the micro-SMES system.

  • The thermal properties of insulation material are essential to develop a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) power cable to be operated at around liquid nitrogen temperature. Unlike metallic materials, nonmetallic materials have a high thermal resistance; therefore special attention needs to be paid to estimate heat flow correctly. Thus, we have developed a precise instrument for measuring the thermal conductivity of insulating materials over a temperature range from 40 K to near room temperature using a cryocooler. Firstly, the measurement of thermal conductivity for Teflon is carried out for accuracy confirmation. For a supplied heat flux, the temperature difference between warm and cold side is measured in steady state, from which the thermal conductivity of Teflon is calculated and compared with published result of NIST. In addition, the apparent thermal conductivity of Polypropylene laminated paper (PPLP) is presented and its temperature dependency is discussed.

  • A 3MJ class SMES was fabricated last year. And 1000A class current part for the SMES also was designed, fabricated and tested. The current lead was made of metal part(brass) and HTS lead Part. The lead is located in vacuum vessel and cooled down to belows the HTS lead's operating temperature. We made three types of current lead part and tested their performance. In this paper, the basic and conceptual type of current lead will be introduced. The lead was expected to have 1000A current capacity. But the test results was only 480A. After this test, based on the results we revised the shape of the lead and improved the connectivity between cryocooler and lead. In this paper, the design procedure and the results of performance test will be introduced.

  • The cryogenic system for inductive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been investigated recently. In this investigation, the sub-cooled nitrogen cryogenic system was adopted to enhance the performance of DC reactor for 6.6㎸/200A inductive SFCL. In sub-cooled nitrogen state at 64K, the critical current value and the thermal conductivity are larger than those of saturated nitrogen state at 77K and the electrical insulation capacitance should be remarkably enhanced. The solenoid type of 84mH superconducting DC reactor was fabricated and cooled down to 64K by using sub-cooled cooling method with GM-cryocooler and rotary pump. The fabrication techniques of cryogenic system and some experimental results such as cooling down characteristic are introduced in this study. Moreover, the sub-cooled nitrogen cryogenic system was detailedly introduced in this paper.

  • A subcooled liquid nitrogen cryostat is required for the cooling of a 6.6 ㎸, 200 A resistive type superconductive fault current limiter (SFCL). To help understand and design an appropriate cryostat for SFCL a prototype cryostat was fabricated and tested. Several states of subcooled liquid nitrogen were obtained by using cryocooler and helium gas. The temperature was uniformly distributed inside the liquid nitrogen vessel within the range of 0.4 K proving the effectiveness of the conduction cylinder.

  • Spaceborne cryocoolers produce undesirable micro-vibration disturbances during their on-orbit operation, which are a primary source of image-quality degradation for high-resolution observation satellites. Therefore, to comply with the strict mission requirement of high-quality image acquisition, micro-vibration disturbances induced by cooler operation have always been subjected to an isolation objective. However, in this study, we focused on the applicability of energy harvesting technology to generate electrical energy from micro-vibration energy of the cooler and investigated the feasibility of utilizing harvested energy as a power source to operate low-power-consumption devices such as micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) devices. A tuned mass damper (TMD)-type electromagnetic energy harvester combined with a conventional passive vibration isolator was proposed to achieve this objective. The system performs the dual functions of electrical energy generation and micro-vibration isolation. The effectiveness of the strategy was evaluated through numerical simulations.

  • In this study, we estimate the thermal conductivity of stainless steel reinforced Bi-2223/Ag tape which was made from American Superconductor. The equipments for thermal conductivity measurement was set up using conduction cooled cryocooler. Two direction of thermal conductivity was measured. The one is the direction of cut length, and the other is direction of transverse of wounded coil with insulation material. It was observed that the thermal conductivity of transverse direction of coil was extremely lower than that of cut length direction. It was mainly seems that superconducting filaments and insulation material were effected on thermal conductivity in thermal conductivity of transverse direction.

  • The paper gives the results of the experiments with a model two-section REBCO solenoid cooled by either gaseous helium (GHe) or sub-cooled/solid nitrogen (SN2) in (50-77) K temperature range. The major cooling source was a single-stage cryocooler Sumitomo CH-110 with the cooling power of 175 W and 130 W at 77 K and 50 K respectively. The coil itself was not directly conduction cooled. We compare the time taken by both coolants to obtain the temperature of the magnet of about 50 K and the homogeneity of the temperature distribution within the cryostat. Test results for the coil operation in solid nitrogen together with the comparison of its critical properties in SN2 and GHe are also presented.
