  • Understanding the crushing behaviour of aluminum honeycombs under dynamic loading is useful for crash simulations of vehicles and for design of impacting energy absorbers. In the study of honeycomb crushing under quasi-static, dynamic loading, the most important parameter is crush strength. Crush strength is indicated to energy absorption characteristic of aluminum honeycomb. In this study, Using Finite Element Analysis carried out crush strength of hexagonal aluminum honeycomb then the results was compared with Quasi-static test. Consequently, Crush strength is different in quasi-static loading and dynamic loading about 16%.

  • A spacer grid which is one of the most important structural components in a pressurized water reactor fuel is an interconnected array of slotted grid straps, welded at the intersections to form an egg-crate structure. The spacer grid is required to not only protect fuel rods stably but also have sufficient lateral crush strength for the sake of enabling shut-down of the nuclear reactor during abnormal operating environments. Then, the lateral crush strength of the spacer grid is closely related with welding quality of the spacer grid. Previous research on the crush strength analysis of the spacer grid had been performed using only parent material properties. In this study, to investigate the effect on the crush strength of the spacer grid when used mechanical properties in weld zone instead of parent material properties, crush strength analysis considering mechanical properties in weld zone obtained from the instrumented indentation technique was performed and compared the results with the previous research.

  • A spacer grid is one of the most important structural components in a LWR nuclear fuel assembly. The primary considerations are to provide a Zircaloy spacer grid with crush strength sufficient to resist design basis loads, without significantly increasing pressure drop across the reactor core. In this study, the dynamic crush strength analysis and test are carried out for the specimens of a spacer grid assembly.

NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF CONVEX AND CONCAVE TUBES WITH CONSIDERATION OF STRAIN RATE SENSITIVITY

  • The present paper deals with the application of the explicit finite element code, PAM-CRASH, to simulate the crash behavior of steel thin-walled tubes with various cross-sections subjected to axial loading. An isotropic elastic, linear strain-hardening material model was used in the finite element analysis and the strain-rate sensitivity of mild steel was modeled by using the Cowper-Symonds constitutive equation with modified coefficients. The modified coefficients were applied in numerical collapse simulations of 11 types of thin-walled polygon tubes: 7 convex polygon tubes and 4 concave polygon tubes. The results show that the thin hexagonal tube and the thick octagonal tube showed relatively good performance within the convex polygon tubes. The crush strengths of the hexagonal and octagonal tubes increased by about 20% and 25% from the crush strength of the square tube, respectively. Among the concave tubes, the I-type tube showed the best performance. Its crush strength was about 50% higher than the crush strength of the square tube.

  • This study compares the concrete using natural sand with the concrete using crush sand for the examination for the properties of a concrete. In the fresh concrete, the concrete using crush sand has less of the quantity of consistency, the content of air, and bleeding than the concrete using natural sand, and the concrete using crush sand has faster setting time than the concrete using natural sand. In hardening concrete, the concrete using crush sand has higher compressive strength and tensile strength than the concrete using natural sand because minute particles fill up a gap. Drying shrinkage of the concrete using natural sand is less than the concrete using crush sand.

  • 지지격자체는 경수로 핵연료집합체의 가장 중요한 핵심 구조부품 중에 하나이다. 질칼로이 지지격자체 설계시의 우선적으로 고려해야 할 사항은 지지격자체가 원자로심에서 냉각수의 심한 수두손실을 유발하지 않으면서 지진사고를 고려한 설계하중 하에서 충분한 횡방향 충격강도를 갖도록 하는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 시험과 유한요소해석을 통해 지지격자체의 횡방향 충격강도에 영향을 주는 인자들에 대한 분석을 수행하였고, 지지격자체 제조용 질칼로이 원자재 소요량을 획기적으로 줄이면서 지지격자체의 횡방향 충격강도를 개선할 수 있는 방안을 제시하였다.

  • 가압경수로 핵연료의 구조부품인 지지격자체는 홈이 있는 격자 스트랩들을 끼우고, 끼워진 교차부위를 용접한 구조물이다. 원자로 비정상 운전중에 원자로의 긴급정지가 가능하도록 하기 위해 지지격 자체는 충분한 횡방향 충격강도를 갖도록 설계되어야 한다. 지지격자체의 횡방향 충격강도 해석에 대한 예전의 연구는 모재의 물성치만을 사용하여 수행되었다. 본 연구에서는 지지격자체 용접부에 모재 물성치를 사용하는 대신 용접물성치를 사용할 경우에 지지격자체 횡방향 충격강도에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 계장형 압입시험법으로부터 얻은 용접물성치를 용접부에 적용한 해석을 수행하였고, 그 해석 결과를 예전 연구결과와 비교하였다.

습도조건에 따른 골판지원지의 링크러쉬강도 예측 모델링 (Prediction Modelings of Ring Crush Strength in Corrugated Base Paper by Humidity Variations)

  • In order to optimize designing process of corrugated fiberboard boxes for agricultural products, first of all, compression strength of each liner were experimentally evaluated on the various conditions of relative humidity and analyzed by liner regression analysis. At the 66 percents of relative humidity, IK(imported kraft liner) liner board lost little of its compression strength compared to others. At the relative humidity 93 percents, KA liner board lost its compression strength only 40 percents while SK liner board lost up to 56 percents. From the result of prediction modeling of ring crush strength in various humidity conditions, R square values were ranged from 0.59 to 0.97. At 56 percents of RH or below, R square values were relatively low, but at 66 percents of RH or higher, the values were 0.85 or higher. The significance values were lower than 0.001 at every RH condition. Level of significance of experimented values was about 80 percents of predicted values and R square values were between 0.89 to 0.95.

강심골판지의 물성에 관한 연구 (A Study of the Physical Properties of Single Wall Dual-layer Medium Corrugated Board)

  • Normally, the single wall(SW) corrugated board has more advantages than double wall (DW) corrugated board in terms of the cost of the materials and logistics. For instance, the SW corrugated board has 3 layer papers whereas the DW corrugated board has 5 layer papers. The thickness of the SW is about 5mm, but that of the DW is 8mm. Accordingly, the SW corrugated board is quite more used in the developed countries than the DW corrugated board. But in Korea, the DW corrugated board is quite more used. The reason why more DW corrugated board are used than the SW corrugated in Korea is that in order that the SW corrugated board has the same box compression strength as DW corrugated board, the cost of the SW corrugated board is higher than that of the DW corrugated board because the virgin kraft liners are all imported from overseas. In this study, the physical properties such as flat crush strength and column crush strength of typical SW corrugated board and single wall dual-layer medium corrugated board and their costs were analyzed. The analysis resulted in that single wall dual-layer medium corrugated board has the same thickness as the SW corrugated board but the more flat crush strength and column crush strength and the less cost than the SW corrugated board.

Polylactic Acid Coating Affects the Ring Crush Strength of Linerboards

  • Paperboards used for linerboard of corrugated fiberboard box were coated with different concentrations of polylactic acid (PLA) solution and the effects of harsh environmental conditions such as high humidity and temperature (96% RH at $30^{\circ}C$ for up to 5 days), and freeze-thaw ($-20^{\circ}C$ for a day and then thaw at room temperature for 30 min) conditions on the ring crush (RC) strength of the boards were investigated. One to five percent PLA solutions were coated onto SC manila linerboard ($20{\times}27cm$) using a No. 20 wire bar coater and the ring crush strength was measured using a computer-controlled Advanced Universal Testing System in accordance with TAPPI Test Method T 822 om-93. The RC strength increased significantly when the concentration of coating solution increased and appreciable changes were found when the concentration increased from 0 to 2% (P<0.05). Similar pattern of results was found after 5-day storage at $30^{\circ}C$ and 96% RH. Although such highly humid condition increased moisture content in the samples up to 3.95 from 0.97 times, the RC strength decreased in the range from 29.9 to 48.5%. The freeze-thaw treatment increased the moisture content only up to 1.27% and the reduction in the RC strength ranged from 21.1 to 28.1 %. The results were promising: the samples coated with 5% PLA solution showed 29.9% reduction in the RC strength while that of control was 48.5% during highly humid condition stated above.
