HyperSAS Data for Polar Ocean Environments Observation and Ocean Color Validation (극지 해양환경 관측 및 고위도 해색 검보정을 위한 초분광 HyperSAS 자료구축)

  • In Arctic and Antarctic ocean, remote sensing is the most effective observation for environmental changes due to the inaccessibility of the regions. Even though satellite, UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehical) are well known remote sensing platforms, and research vessel also used for automatic measurement on the regions, varied environment of Polar regions require time series and wide coverage of data. Especially, in high latitude, apply an optical satellite remote sensing is not easy due to low sun altitude. In this paper, we introduce an operation of hyper-spectrometer (HyperSAS/Satlantic inc.) which is mounted on Ice Breaker Research Vessel ARAON of Korea Polar Research Institute since 2010, to acquire an above water reflectance atomatically through every research cruise on Arctic and Antarctic ocean and transit both regions. In addition to, auxiliary data for the remotely acquired data, in situ water sampling were also obtained. The above water reflectance and in situ water sampling data are continuously acquired since 2010 will contribute to improve an Ocean Color algorithm in the high latitude and help to understand ocean reflectances over from high latitude through low latitude. Preliminary result from above water reflectance showed characteristics of Arctic ocean and Antarctic Ocean and used to develop algorithms for estimating various ocean factors such as chlorophyll and suspended sediment.

Distribution And Abundance Of Copepods In The Gulf Of Alaska And The Bering Sea In Summer 1978 (하계(夏季) Alaska만(灣)과 Bering해(海)의 Copepods의 분포조성(分布組成))

  • The materials were obtained in the eastern Gulf of Alaska and the south- eastern Bering Sea during the cruise of the research vessel, Ohdae San, from July to October 1978. A total of 76 samples were taken by NORPAC net from a depth of 200 meters or less in coastal areas. 1. The surface water temperature in the coastal waters, varing from 9 to 10$^{\circ}C$, was lower than that in offshore waters which varied from 10 to 12.9$^{\circ}C$ in the eastern Gulf of Alaska. Thermocline was formed in the 30∼50 meter layer. Salinity of the coastal waters of Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak was 30 which was slightly lower than that of offshore. 2. The water temperature of the surface layer down to 30 meters varied from 7 to 10$^{\circ}C$ and from 1 to 9$^{\circ}C$ in the layer below 30 meters in the south-eastern Bering Sea. Meandering thermal front spread from the Alaska Peninsula to St. Matthew Island by way of St. Paul, and a thermocline was found at the 30∼50 meter layer Salinity ranged from 31.0 to 33.0 and that of northern and coastal waters was little lower than that of offshore. 3. Zooplankton biomass fluctuated from 0.1 to 23.6cc/10㎥ in the eastern Gulf of Alaska and 2.0 to 26.1cc/10㎥ in the south-eastern Bering Sea. Plankton was rich in the following areas, the inshore Kodiak waters, the northern Bering Sea, the Coastal waters and waters adjacent to Alutian islands however, poor in the central Bering Sea. In general, the south-eastern Bering Sea has a higher concentration of plankton volume than the eastern Gulf of Alaska. 4. Twenty three species representing 17 genera of copepods were identified from the samples. These were mostly composed of the cold water species, such as Pseudocalanus minutus, Acartia longiremis, Metridia lucens and Eucalanus bungii var. bungii. 5. The cold oceanic species were composed of Calanus cristatus, C.plumchrus, Metridia lucens, Eucalanus bungii var. bungii and Scolecithricella minor. The cold neritic species were Centropages abdominalis, Pseudocalanus minutus, Acartia longiremis, Eurytemora herdmanii, Pontella pulvinata, P. longipedata and Tortanus discaudatus. On the other hand, the warm oceanic species were Calanus tenuicornis and Oithona plumifera. The cosmopolitan species were Calanus finmarchicus and Oithona similis. 6. It was suggested that the cold oceanic species, Eucalanus bungii var. bungii and Metridia lucens in the south-eastern Bering Sea can be recommended as a valuable indicator species for finding the fishing grounds of demersal fish such as pollock and yellowfin sole in this area.

A Study on the Evaluation Index of Crown Height given Marine Environmental Factors and Ship Characteristics (해상 환경 및 선박 특성을 반영한 마루높이 평가지표에 관한 연구)

  • Korea has recently selected twenty-two ports for reinforcement breakwater installation of protection facilities, due to rise sea level caused by global warming and increase in the number of typhoon and tsunami. In addition, due to consistent enlargement of ship size, dredging for depth of water for large vessel's berthing and enlargement of berth is under construction. However, no definite construction plan for the reinforcement and lengthening of crown height, which has close relationship with the safe mooring of ships. In this study, domestic and foreign design criteria of crown height were analyzed, and the crown height evaluation index and evaluation method were developed by dividing it into environment and ship elements. In particular, in the case of ship evaluation index, each step was set up in 4 steps according to domestic and foreign regulations, weighted by each step, and the safety level of crown height was evaluated. As a result of the mooring safety simulation of the 100,000 ton cruise ship, the appropriate minimum crown height standard was derived to be 3 m above A.H.H.W. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data to propose the crown height standard reflecting ship characteristics.

Acoustic images of the submarine fan system of the northern Kumano Basin obtained during the experimental dives of the Deep Sea AUV URASHIMA (심해 자율무인잠수정 우라시마의 잠항시험에서 취득된 북 구마노 분지 해저 선상지 시스템의 음향 영상)

  • Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) present the important advantage of being able to approach the seafloor more closely than surface vessel surveys can. To collect bathymetric data, bottom material information, and sub-surface images, multibeam echosounder, sidescan sonar (SSS) and subbottom profiler (SBP) equipment mounted on an AUV are powerful tools. The 3000m class AUV URASHIMA was developed by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). After finishing the engineering development and examination phase of a fuel-cell system used for the vehicle's power supply system, a renovated lithium-ion battery power system was installed in URASHIMA. The AUV was redeployed from its prior engineering tasks to scientific use. Various scientific instruments were loaded on the vehicle, and experimental dives for science-oriented missions conducted from 2006. During the experimental cruise of 2007, high-resolution acoustic images were obtained by SSS and SBP on the URASHIMA around the northern Kumano Basin off Japan's Kii Peninsula. The map of backscatter intensity data revealed many debris objects, and SBP images revealed the subsurface structure around the north-eastern end of our study area. These features suggest a structure related to the formation of the latest submarine fan. However, a strong reflection layer exists below ~20 ms below the seafloor in the south-western area, which we interpret as a denudation feature, now covered with younger surface sediments. We continue to improve the vehicle's performance, and expect that many fruitful results will be obtained using URASHIMA.
