Optimization of the Gear Tooth Crowning Amount Considering Contact Subsurface Stress (표면아래응력을 고려한 기어이의 크라우닝 최적화에 관한 연구)

  • Gear is an essential component of an automotive. Crowning is used for tooth modification of a gear. The basic concept of gear tooth crowning is to reduce the stress concentration in edge of contact area and appropriate profile modifications can help gears to resist scoring, pitting, and tooth breakage. In this study, a method to determinate spur gear tooth crowning amount to make smooth surface stress and subsurface stress distribution is proposed. This method is based on the contact analysis.

  • The media transport in automatic office machines such as printers, ATMs, copying machines is achieved by a complicated belt system. The system generally uses a crowning roller and belt which has been well-known for its intrinsic belt centering advantage during its operation. Since the modern office machines require precise high operating speed, stabilization of media transporting system has been one of the important issues of the machine design. Even a minor defect of the belt or the roller in the transport system directly affects its operating stability. This paper delivers a simulation technique that combines a multi-body dynamics analysis routine and a FEM based flexible continuum modeling for the efficient simulation of the flexible media transport problems.

Control of Crowning Using Residual Stress induced by the Difference of Tehermal Expansion Between Ceramic and Carbon Steel in Ceramic Cam Follower (열팽창계수차에 기인된 잔류응력을 이용한 세라믹 캠 팔로우어의 크라우닝 제어)

  • As the engine design changes to get high efficiency and performance of commercial diesel engine, surface w wear of the earn follower becomes an important issue as applied load increasing at the contact face between cam follower and cam. We developed the ceramic cam follower made of sili$\infty$n nitride ceramic which was more wear resistant than the cast iron or sintered metal cam follower. Ceramic cam follower was made by direct brazing of thin ceramic disk to steel body using an active brazing alloy without the interlayer. In-situ crowning(R), resulted from the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between ceramic and carbon steel after direct brazing without any stress-relieving inter]ayer, could be controlled. When a earbon steel was heated above $A_{c1}$ point and then c$\infty$led, the expansion curve represented a hysteresis. Appropriate crowning was achieved below the $A_{c1}$ point(about $723^{\circ}C$) and crowning increased with brazing temperature exponentially above the $A_{c1}$ point. Optimum brazing temperature range was from 700 to $720^{\circ}C$. We developed successfully the ceramic cam follower having appropriate crowning and being inexpensive. Also we could successfully control the crowning of ceramic earn follower by hysteresis behavior of thermal expansion of earbon steel during direct brazing process.

Simulation of Meshing for the Spur Gear Drive with Modified Tooth Surfaces

  • The authors have proposed methods (lead crowning and profile modification) for modifying the geometry of spur gears and investigated the contact pattern as well as the transmission errors to recommend the appropriate amount of modification. Based on the investigation, dynamic load of the modified spur gear drive has been calculated, which is helpful to predict the life of the designed gear drive. Computer programs for simulation of meshing, contact and dynamics of the modified spur gears have been developed. The developed theory is illustrated with numerical examples.

  • This paper presents a new method for roller design of IRB(isolation roller bearing) seismic isolation device using experimental evaluation. Three layered plate is adopted for the IRB in which the upper plate is placed on x direction and the lower plate is placed on y direction. The rollers placed in each plate make a plate movement. The roller is then optimally designed using variable geometric conditions. Stress distribution depends on the diameter and length of the roller and hence this is used for the determination of optimal geometry of the roller. In the experimental evaluation, it is observed that stress concentration at the end sides of roller is decreased and geometric coefficients depend on crowning dimension. In addition, in order to determine optimal design parameters of the roller the plastic deformation and friction are experimentally identified.

Purpose of this study is the developing of the ceramic cam follower made of silicon nitride ceramic which is more wear resistant than the cast iron and sintered cam follower. Ceramic cam follower was made by direct brazing of thin ceramic disk to steel can follower body using active bracing alloy. Effect of joining condition on the interfacial phases and joining strength wer examined at bvarious joining temperatures, times, and cooling rates. Crowning resulted from the difference of thermal expansion coefficient after direct brazing without using any stress-relieving inter layer was measured. Interfacial phases are mainly titanium silicide and titanium nitride which are the products between active metal(Ti) in brazing alloy and silicon nitiride. Maximum joining strength of the ceramic metal joint, measured by DBS method, was 334MPa. Crowning(R) of the prototype ceramic cam follower was 1595mm. As machining for crowning is not necessary, production cost can be reduced.

  • This paper shows the failure(wear) phenomena of differential bearings in the transaxle of passenger cars and investigate their characteristics. It was found that the wear mechanism was mild abrasive wear caused by the presence of particles in the gear box. The sides of the outer raceway was more neared than center of it, so it is showed as if the crowning of outer raceway are increased. With close examination of the failed bearing, various countermeasures could be suggested.

  • Vibration and noise of gears is doc to the transmission error and the vibration exciting force caused by the periodically alternating tooth stiffness. Transmission error is the rotation delay between driving and driven gear caused by manufacturing error, alignment error in assembly and so on. Tooth stiffness changes with the proceeding mesh of teeth. The purpose of this study is to develop how to calculate simultaneously the optimum amounts of tooth profile modification. end relief and crowning by minimizing the vibration exciting force of helical gears. We estimate the vibration exciting force by the meshing analysis of gears. Formulated constraints of this problem consist of contact ratio and strengths of gear teeth such as tooth bending strength, surface durability, and scoring. ADS(Automated Design Synthesis) is used as an optimization tool. We also investigate the relation between the aspect ratio and the optimum values of tooth modification. The proposed method can calculate the optimum amount of tooth modification automatically and is expected to be practically useful to resolve the problem of vibration of helical gears.
