  • We introduce a novel and efficient strategy for producing free-standing functional films via photo-crosslinking and electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly, which can allow the buildup of hydrophilic multilayers onto hydrophobic surfaces. Hydrophobic multilayers were deposited on ionic substrates by a photo-crosslinking LbL process using photo-crosslinkable polymers. The photo-crosslinked surface was converted to an anionic surface by excess UV light irradiation. This treatment allowed also the stable adhesion between metal electrode or cationic polyelectrolyte and hydrophobic multilayers. After dissolving the ionic substrates in water, the formed free-standing films exhibited unique functionalities of inserted components within hydrophobic and/or hydrophilic multilayers.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) was crosslinked by UV irradiation in the presence of water soluble photoinitiators. The crosslinking of PVA films with 1,2,3,4-Butanetetracarboxylic acid(BTCA) and sodium phosphinate monohydrate(SPM) was also achieved via thermal curing. Different factors in the crosslinking including thermal and radiation methods were studied. Gel fraction of PVA films increased with increasing photoinitiator concentration. The maximum gel fraction on the crosslinking method was reached about 81%. The glass transition and maximum decomposition temperature improved by both thermal and radiation crosslinking.

  • Segmented polyurethanes have been widely used for various commercial and experimental blood-contacting and tissue-contacting applications such as vascular prostheses, blood pumps, heart valves, pacemaker lead wire insulation, catheters, artificial hearts, and cardiac assist devices due to their generally favorable physical and mechanical properties, as well as fairly good biocompatibility and antithrombogenicity characteristics. • The current status of reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration membranes are reviewed with the view for the future. In the case of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, as examples, new crosslinked aromatic polyamide membranes exhibited the superior separation performance with the sufficient water permeability, the high tolerance for oxidizing agents and chemicals. Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane based on poly(phenylene sulfide sulfone) (PPSS) also exibited the superior separation performance with the high solvent, heat and fouling resistance.

  • XLPE/VLDPE (Crosslinked polyethylene/very low density polyethylene) blends were prepared by a twin screw extruder and their electrical properties such as water tree and breakdown characteristic were measured. it was found that both water tree and breakdown characteristics of XLPE were improved by the addition of VLDPE to polyethylene. It was also found that the extent of improvement of electrical properties by the addition of VLDPE to polyethylene depends on the type and concentration of VLDPE.

  • Rheological studies on the gelatin hydrogels were carried out by rheometer. In the temperature range of $32^{\circ}~90{\circ}C$, the viscosities of the gelatin hydrogels were measured. In order to observe the formation of gel structure, the stress-relaxation tests of the creep-curves were investigated. The structure of viscoelastic substance could be considered of a three dimensional crosslinked matrix. As the result viscoelastic coefficients were obtained by Maxwell element, which are correspond to the network structure. From the relationship between the stress-relaxation time and temperature, activation energy correspond to breaking the formation of gels was calculated to be 13.91kcal/mole.

  • A semi-interpenetrating network (IPN) was prepared for a temperature-sensitive polymer system composed of sodium alginate and poly (N, N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA)-co-ethyl acrylamide (EAAm)). The role of sodium alginate is to provide crosslinked network and that of poly(DMAEMA-co-EAAm) is to provide temperature responsiveness to the polymer system. Semi-IPN gel shows temperature-induced swelling transition at the same temperature of the lower critical solution temperature of poly(DMAEMA-co-EAAm) and its swelling kinetics is manipulated by the control of crosslinking densitv.

  • The setting behavior of disulfide-enriched wool and disulfide-crosslinked silk obtained by treatment with a disulfide-containing crosslinking agent, bis $(\beta-isocyanatoethyl)$ dissulfide was compared with that of untreated wool and silk under the absence and the presence of a reducing agent. Rearrangment of secondary bonds facilitated by cleavage of crosslinks as well as rearrangement of crosslinks itself seems to play an important role in the set stability.
