In accurate prediction of cross-flow based on detailed knowledge of the velocity field in subchannels of a nuclear fuel assembly is of importance in nuclear fuel performance analysis. In this study, the low-Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model has been adopted in too adjacent subchannels with cross-flow. The secondary flow is accurately estimated by the anisotropic algebraic Reynolds stress model. This model was numerically calculated by the finite element method and has been verified successfully through comparison with existing experimental data. Finally, with the numerical analysis of the velocity Held in such subchannel domain, an analytical correlation of the lateral loss coefficient is obtained to predict the cross-flow rate in subchannel analysis codes. The correlation is expressed as a function of the ratio of the lateral How velocity to the donor subchannel axial velocity, recipient channel Reynolds number and pitch-to-diameter.
Three-dimensional flow analysis was performed by using the control volume finite-element method for design of a profile extrusion die. Because polymer melt behavior is complicated and cross-sectional shape of the profile extrusion die is changing continuously, the fluid flow within the die must be analyzed three-dimensionally. A commercially available polypropylene is used for theoretical and experimental investigations. Material properties are assumed to be constant except for the viscosity. The 5-constant modified Cross model is used for the numerical analysis. A test problem is examined in order to verify the accuracy of the numerical method. Simulations are performed for conditions of three different screw speeds and three different die temperatures. Predicted pressure distribution is compared with the experimental measurements and the results of the previous two-dimensional study. The computational results obtained by using three dimensional CVFEM agree with the experimental measurements and are more accurate than those obtained by using the two-dimensional cross-sectional method. The velocity profiles and the temperature distributions within several cross-sections of the die are given as contour plots.
High-speed flight vehicle have various cavities. The supersonic cavity flow is complicated due to vortices, flow separation and reattachment, shock and expansion waves. The general cavity flow phenomena include the formation and dissipation of vortices, which induce oscillation and noise. The oscillation and noise greatly affect flow control, chemical reaction, and heat transfer processes. The supersonic cavity' flow with high Reynolds number is characterized by the pressure oscillation due to turbulent shear layer, cavity geometry, and resonance phenomenon based on external flow conditions, The resonance phenomena can damage the structures around the cavity and negatively affect aerodynamic performance and stability. In the present study, we performed numerical analysis of cavities by applying the unsteady, compressible three dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equations with the ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ turbulence model. The cavity model used for numerical calculation had a depth(D) of 15mm cavity aspect ratio(L/D) of 3, width to spanwise ratio(W/D) of 1.0 to 5.0. Based on the PSD(Power Spectral Density) and CSD(Cross Spectral Density) analysis of the pressure variation, the dominant frequency was analyized and compared with the results of Rossiter's Eq.

Turbulent jet flow has been studied in many ways; a plane jet, a rectangular jet, an annular jet, a round jet, a wall jet, a parallel jet, a valve jet, a cross jet, a slit jet and etc. In this report, a 45.deg. cross jet flow was tried by using two same dimensioned nozzels(dia..phi.20)which were set up at the exit of the subsonic wind tunnel. Each jet flows to the direction of 22.5.deg. to the axis of downstream of the mixed flow. The centerline of each jet meets at the distance of 217.3mm and their mixing flow could be imagined to develop beyond that distance, so the measurement was effectuated at X/X$_{0}$=1.2-1.5. The section of the mixed flow a elliptic circle which is formed by the 22.5.deg. inclined flows to the X direction. This experimental study aimed at the investigation of the turbulent mixing process of two jets; the mean velocities, the turbulent shear stresses, the correlation coefficients, and the momentum were respectively measured. The mean velocity distribution profiles of the down-stream component measured in the Y direction coincide well with the empirical equation of Gortler and those measured in the Z direction agree with the equation of H. Schlichting. Other mean velocities V over bar and W over bar components were randomly distributed. The higher values with same order of the intensity of turbulence were largely distributed at the central part of the flow. The momentum was decreased up to 70% by the shock losses and the development of intense turbulences, but it kept its value constantly beyond X/d=14. Two-channel hot-wire anemometer systems (model 1050 series), X-type hot-wire made of tungsten (dia. .phi.e.mu.m, long 3mm, model 0252 T5), a computer(model HP 9845B0, and a plotter (model HP 9872C) were used for the experiments and the analyses.s.

The objective of experimental study is to apply simultaneous measurement by PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) to high_speed flow characteristics within ginseng cleaner model. Three different kinds of flow rate(15. 20, 27l/min) are selected as experimental condition. Optimized cross correlation identification to obtain velocity distribution, time-mean velocity distribution, velocity, profile, kinetic energy and turbulence intensity are represented quantitatively for the deeped understanding of the flow characteristics in a ginseng cleaner model.
The cross-flow fan which constitutes a fan-duct system with a stabilizer and a scroll casing is widely used in many air-ventilating and air-conditioning devices. Its ooperating points of high efficiency and loading conditions frequently induce a annoying sharp tonal component of discrete frequency on the noise spectrum, which is open called as a BPF(Blade-Passing-Frequency) noise and degrades the sound quality of the devices. this BPF tone has been one of the defects of the cross-flow fan. This study proposes two methods in order to reduce this tonal noise component, which are the random distributions of the fan blades and the skewed shapes of the stabilizer. The proposed methods are verified by a simple analytical model and are applied in manufacturing the cross-flow fan and the stabilizer samples. Some experiments are carried out to verify the reduction capability of BPF tones of above two schemes and the experimental results are analyzed. The comparison between two method is also carried out.

The spray and combustion characteristics of liquid jet in cross flow with variation of injection angle are numerically studied. Numerical analysis was carried out using KIVA code, which may be used to generate numerical solutions to spray and chemical reactive fluid problem in three space dimensions and modified to be suitable for simulating liquid jet ejected into the cross flow. Wave model and Kelvin- Helmholtz(KH) /Rayleigh-Taylor(RT) hybrid model were used for the purpose of analyzing liquid column, ligament, and the breakup of droplet. Penetration length increases as flow velocity decreases and injection velocity increases. Numerical error increases as inflow velocity increases. The results of flame propagation contour in combustion chamber and local temperature distribution, combustion emissions were obtained.
The objective of this paper is simulating blood flow through the branched and stenotic tube numerically. SC-Tetra, which is one of the commercial code using FVM method, was utilized for this analysis. The flow is assumed as an incompressible laminar flow with the additional condition of non-Newtonian fluid. As the constitutive equation for the fluid viscosity, the following models were solved with governing equations ; Cross Model, Modified Cross Model, Carreau Model and Carreau-Yasuda Model. Final goal was achieved to get analytic data about shear stress, at specific points, changing the geometry with various factors like the bifurcation angle, diameter of the branches, the ratio of stenosis, and etc. The material property of blood was referred from the related papers. Furthermore, to verify results they were compared with those of the published papers. There were some discrepancies based on the different solver and the different data post-processing method. However, many parameters like the location of low shear stress, which arised from bifurcation or stenosis, and the tendency of various factors were found to be very similar.
This paper presents theoretical background for a semi-empirical, mathematical model of critical vortex excitation of slender structures of compact cross-sections. The model can be applied to slender tower-like structures (chimneys, towers), and to slender elements of structures (masts, pylons, cables). Many empirical formulas describing across-wind load at vortex excitation depending on several flow parameters, Reynolds number range, structure geometry and lock-in phenomenon can be found in literature. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate mathematical background of the vortex excitation model for a theoretical case of the structure section. Extrapolation of the mathematical model for the application to real structures is also presented. Considerations are devoted to various cases of wind flow (steady and unsteady), ranges of Reynolds number and lateral vibrations of structures or their absence. Numerical implementation of the model with application to real structures is also proposed.
Detailed flow analysis in river is essential to increase the accuracy of water quality simulation since flow variation depends on many factors such as cross sections, channel slopes, and bed materials. In the QUAL2E stream water quality simulation model, the hydraulic coefficients are assigned to the reach that is collection of computational element using the hydraulic coefficient. This study developed a module that can incorporate the results of non-uniform flow analysis and assign such information to each individual element. Model application focused on the upstream of the Hoengseong reservoir including the reservoir where significant flow change is expected. Comparing with original QUAL2E model the developed module improved the result of water quality simulation without considering the relation of flow velocity and flow depth in terms of flow rates.
