  • In this paper, we proposed fence electrode structures. The experimental structures change cross-bar length as 145, 105, 65 and $30{\mu}m$ to improve the electro-optical characteristics. The proposed structures improve the addressing time and luminous efficacy compared with the T145 structure which has the cross-bar length of $145{\mu}m$ as the reference. Especially, in the case of the T30 structure with cross-bar length of $30{\mu}m$, it gains lower power consumption by 34%, and higher luminous efficacy by 20% than those of the reference structure.

  • The main objective of the present research was investigating the effects of a floating wave barrier installed in front of an offshore jacket structure on the wave height, base shear, and overturning moment. A jacket model with the height of 4.55 m was fabricated and tested in the 402 m-long wave flume of NIMALA marine laboratory. The jacket was tested at the water depth of 4 m subjected to the random waves with a JONSWAP energy spectrum. Three input wave heights were chosen for the tests: 20 cm, 23 cm, and 28 cm. Two different cross sections with the same area were selected for the wave barrier: square and rhombus. Results showed that the average decrease in the jacket's base shear due to the presence of a floating wave barrier with square and rhombus cross section was 24.67% and 34.29%, respectively. The use of wave barriers with square and rhombus cross sections also resulted in 19.78% and 33.11% decrease in the jacket's overturning moment, respectively. Hence, it can be concluded that a floating wave barrier can significantly reduce the base shear and overturning moment in an offshore jacket structure; and a rhombus cross section is more effective than an equivalent square section.

  • The spanwise flow structure around a rigid smooth circular cylinder model in cross-flow has been investigated based on the experimental data obtained from a series of wind tunnel tests. Surface pressures were collected at five spanwise locations along the cylinder over a Reynolds number range of $1.14{\times}15^5$ to $5.85{\times}10^5$, which covered sub-critical, single-bubble and two-bubble regimes in the critical range. Separation angles were deduced from curve fitted to the surface pressure data. In addition, spanwise correlations and power spectra analyses were employed to study the spatial structure of flow. Results at different spanwise locations show that the transition into single-bubble and two-bubble regimes could occur at marginally different Reynolds numbers which expresses the presence of overlap regions in between the single-bubble regime and its former and later regimes. This indicates the existence of three-dimensional flow around the circular cylinder in cross-flow, which is also supported by the observed cell-like surface pressure patterns. Relatively strong spanwise correlation of the flow characteristics is observed before each transition within the critical regime, or formation of first and second separation-bubbles. It is also noted that these organized flow structures might lead to greater overall aerodynamic forces on a circular cylinder in cross-flow within the critical Reynolds number regime.

  • In the fully developed pipe flow, when jet is injected in cross to the flow there are complex transition flows caused by interaction of the cross flow and jet. These interactions are studied by means of the flow visualization methods and frequency analysis using a hot-wire anemometer. The velocity range of cross flow of the pipe is 0.3 m/s ~ 1.2 m/s and the corresponding Reynolds number, R$\sub$p/, based on the pipe diameter is 2.25 * 10$\^$3/ ~ 9.02 * 10$\^$3/. The velocity ratio (R), jet velocity/cross flow velocity, is chosen from 2 to 10. A circular cylinder is placed in the pipe instead of jet to observe the vortex shedding from the solid body. To compare the jet and circular cylinder flow, the vortical structure is analyzed in both cases and the structure of vortices and the origin of its formation are investigated, especially. The vortex shedding of the dominant coherent structure is compared between the jet flow and the circular cylinder flow. In the case of the jet flow, the Strouhal numbers are different depending on the existence of the upright vortex as well as the velocity ratio (R).

  • Background: The radionuclide inventory calculation codes such as ORIGEN and FISPACT collapse neutron reaction libraries with energy spectra and generate an effective one-group cross-section. Since the nuclear cross-section data, energy group (g) structure, and other input details used by the two codes are different, there may be differences in each code's activation inventory calculation results. In this study, the calculation results of neutron-induced activation inventory using ORIGEN and FISPACT were compared and analyzed regarding radioactive waste classification and worker exposure during nuclear decommissioning. Materials and Methods: Two neutron spectra were used to obtain the comparison results: Watt fission spectrum and thermalized energy spectrum. The effective one-group cross-sections were generated for each type of energy group structure provided in ORIGEN and FISPACT. Then, the effective one-group cross-sections were analyzed by focusing on 59Ni, 63Ni, 94Nb, 60Co, 152Eu, and 154Eu, which are the main radionuclides of stainless steel, carbon steel, zircalloy, and concrete for decommissioning nuclear power plant (NPP). Results and Discussion: As a result of the analysis, 154Eu and 59Ni may be overestimated or underestimated depending on the code selection by up to 30%, because the cross-section library used for each code is different. When ORIGEN-44g, -49g, and -238g structures are selected, the differences of the calculation results of effective one-group cross-section according to group structure selection were less than 1% for the six nuclides applied in this study, and when FISPACT-69g, -172g, and -315g were applied, the difference was less than 1%, too. Conclusion: ORIGEN and FISPACT codes can be applied to activation calculations with their own built-in energy group structures for decommissioning NPP. Since the differences in calculation results may occur depending on the selection of codes and energy group structures, it is appropriate to properly select the energy group structure according to the accuracy required in the calculation and the characteristics of the problem.

  • The cross flow turbine is economical because of its simple structure. For remote rural region, there are needs for a more simple structure and very low head cross flow turbines. However, in this kind of locations, the water from upstream always flows into the turbine with some other materials such as sand and pebble. These materials will be damage to the runner blade and shorten the turbine lifespan. Therefore, there is a need to develop a new type of cross flow turbine for the remote rural region where there is availability of abundant resources. The new design of the cross flow turbine has an inlet open duct, without guide vane and nozzle to simplify the structure. However, the turbine with inlet open duct and very low head shows relatively low efficiency. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to optimize the shape of the turbine inlet to improve the efficiency, and investigate the internal flow of a very low head cross flow turbine. There are two steps to optimize the turbine inlet shape. Firstly, by changing the turbine open angle along with changing the turbine inlet open duct bottom line (IODBL) location to investigate the internal flow. Secondly, keeping the turbine IODBL location at the maximum efficiency achieved at the first step, and changing the turbine IODBL angle to improve the performance. The result shows that there is a 7.4% of efficiency improvement by optimizing turbine IODBL location (open angle), and there is 0.3% of efficiency improvement by optimizing the turbine IODBL angle.

  • Recently, micro hydropower attracts attention because of its clean. renewable and abundant energy resources to develop. However, suitable turbine type is not normalized yet in the range of micro hydropower and it is necessary to study for the effective turbine type. Moreover, relatively high manufacturing cost by the complex structure of the turbine is the highest barrier for developing the micro hydropower turbine. Therefore a cross-flow turbine is proposed for micro-hydropower in this study because of its simple structure and high possibility of applying to low head. The purpose of this study Is to further optimize the turbine structure and improve the performance. A guide vane is removed and the runner chamber is made compact using a new air supply method. The results show that the efficiency of the turbine is improved in a wide operating range and the size of the turbine is remarkably reduced.

  • In order to control vibration in structures, it is desirable to be able to identify dominant paths of vibration transmission from sources through the structure to some points of interest. Structural intensity vector(power flow per width of cross section) using cross spectra is able to measure the vibration power flow at a point in a structure. This paper describes the structural intensity measurement of 2-dimensional structure. Structural intensity of 2-dimensional structure can be obtained from eight point cross spectral measurement per axis, or two point measurement per axis on the assumption of far field. Approximate formulation of the relation between bending waves in structures and structural intensity makes it possible to separate the wave components by which one can get a state of the vibration field. Experimental results are obtained on an infinite plate at the near and far field in flexural vibration. The measurement error of two point measurement is rather bigger than eight point measurement on account of the assumption that Poisson's ratio is 1. The structural intensity vectors on the plate are checked the ability to identify the path of vibration power flow in random excitation and 200Hz sine excitation, the result of two point measurememt is almost the same as the result of eight point measurement in 200Hz sine excitation.
